Come on, Irene (formerly about the VA quake)

Gee, that hurts. This whole thing is nothing more than people on the east coast being self-centered. A non-serious earthquake that does little to no damage hits them, and it's the end of the world. :aaah:

Tell me this: If an earthquake of the same magnitude hit anywhere else, would it be news worthy? Would it be the top news result and get coverage on CNN? Nope. Because IT'S NOT THAT BAD.
You'd be surprised what gets coverage on CNN.

Do you like to read? Libraries will let you READ ALL THE BOOKS YOU WANT FOR FREE. FOR LIFE. This is CNN.

I've felt like three earthquakes ever in my life. Pardon me and my region for getting a little excited.
It's not about being excited. I can see how people would be excited, have some fun, maybe freak out a little. What isn't justified is the heavy CNN coverage, the panic on blogs about nuclear meltdowns due to the earthquake, and comparisons to 9/11.

EDIT: So maybe I should have said the east coast media was being self-centered. That seems more accurate.

hey we had an earthquake in the middle of fucking south dakota that is some weird shit.

Worrisome? Nah. Of interest due to lack of frequency? Sure! Worth dramatic panic attacks over? Psh!

And you KNOW someone's going to take off work "to help deal with the stress of the Big One of '11." *eyeroll*

Now, the question is, if I go to a bar tonight, how many guys will be claiming responsibility for the quake as a pick-up line?

well...... it has been dormant for 40 years. Now there is a "small" quake.

What would prevent from having a LARGER one? Maybe this is a pre-panic party!

Felt it in Philly. Happened while I was at work.

Now all the fucking news stations won't shut up about it.

I was going to post: In before some asshole from California posts about a 5.8 quake being no big deal. Looks like you assholes beat me to it.

I would make a comment about stupid Philly assholes too, but that's redundant.

Well of course 5.8 will mean shit in California. They have the infrastructure to support that especially considering that they are sadly located on one of the more dangerous areas in the world for that type of natural disaster and most buildings in the half a century have been built with extensive precautions that a jolt of that power will affect very little.

The East coast is not as prepared.

And 5.8 in a place like China and you got yourself a lot of dead people.

This would be like having it snow in California say... 3 inches. You know what will happen? Sheer chaos and the cities will shut down, dead people in accidents everywhere, people panicking and looting stores (new Orleans style) and religious folks will be swinging off American banners about the end of the world.

3 inches in Canada? I won't even put my jacket on to go to work, on schedule and I'll say "Wake me up when two feet of snow fall down."

So is a 5.8 earthquake a big deal? Sure is and hopefully no one died from this.

But comparing this to the terror of 9/11?

I get the point you were making, Jay, but just FYI, I lived in California, in a place where getting 2+ feet of snow was a routine.

Just sayin'...

As a colorado transplant in texas, I can personally vouch for the fact that snow doesn't even have to stick to the ground to make texans go absolutely ape shit as if the end of days were upon them.
