[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

That is why I specified Henson.

But I still say that Labyrinth and Dark Crystal > Pixar. Not objectively or anything, I just like them better.

I dunno, I do love the Incredibles something fierce, probably more than the Dark Crystal, less than Labyrinth. I think what both companies really share in common is that they are looking for great stories to tell, not just demonstrating how good the technical aspects of their work are.

Transformers 3

Well, I "legally obtained" this and got my money's worth. It wasn't the giant waste of time that TF2 was, but it was no better or worse than the first one (which was...okay, but not something I thought was as good as many others thought). The story made a lot more sense this time around, the special effects were much clearer (likely because Bay had to rein it in because of the 3-D), and the action was fun as hell.

That said, there was still far too much focus on the humans, especially in the last 40 minutes of action. I kept saying, "Aren't there Autobots in this movie, too?" Much like the first and especially the second movie, there were a lot of subplots that were unnecessary and only bogged down the plot, not to mention the running time. And even though they introduced some pretty cool new Transformers in this one, I still didn't have a clue who most of them were.

So...yeah, overall? It sucked a lot less than the second. I don't regret watching it but I'll likely not watch it again.

Human Centepede 2.

It was everything the last one was, multiplied by 12.

Take that as you will depending on you felt about the first film.

It was in black and white completely, with the exception of one scene where the subtle color brown is displayed for "effect".

There's also mid torture birth, infant death, masterbation with sandpaper, rape torture with barbed wire and lots lots more.

On a related note:

I saw Hostel 3 last night, and I was worried that as it was going direct to video, that it was going to be a low rent/budget weak sequel to the fun series. I was happily proven wrong. It had fantastic twists, great kill scenes, and an overall satisfying story.

Only really recommended for gore porn enthusiasts, but if you are one, get a copy of this.

I actually liked Transformers 3. It was competent. The 3D was cool and the action was a cool spectacle. It was almost worth sitting through the dumb subplots and rah rah military bullshit.

I saw You've Got Mail for the first time. I think it's the first really bad Romantic Comedy I've watched reel to reel. I was really confused at the ending. This sounds like a dumb cliche, but I had to talk to a female friend at work before I guess I "got it". But. Man, those secondary characters were so weird and poorly-written. I do have to give it credit that the break-up scene is really... weirdly realistic and honest in a weird, restrained way.

Kung Fu Panda 2

Well, I dug (and own) the first one, so I had to see it. And...I kinda liked this one a little more. Maybe because, like superhero movies, we've got the "origin story" out of the way. Plus, the stakes were a little more personal, which made things a little more interesting, plot-wise. Given the teaser at the end of this one, I'm hoping the next one will have a Seven Samurai-esque story structure.

Another Earth

Make no mistake: this is much more an independent drama than a sci-fi movie. They could have easily changed it to a more earthly setting without honestly missing much at all. That said, I did appreciate how they used the medium in background storytelling to show the development of Earth 2, with TV or radio. 90% of the plot, though, revolved around the human drama. Which was good, don't get me wrong. In fact, it was so good, when they brought up Earth 2 again, I was like, "OH yeah."

Still, the ending right before the credits made me wonder what exactly was going on there. It's the sort of thing I'll be tossing around in my head for the next few days. If anyone else has seen it, I'd love to discuss said ending.

Star Wars: Finally got to show this to my twin cousins. I was loving it--such a great movie. One of them did to, but we were a little late for the girl. She was willing at the beginning, but by halfway she was doing exaggerated yawns. That might just be her mood this weekend. (She doesn't want to do anything, but she's complaining about being bored even when we offer to do whatever activity she wants, and she has no idea. Didn't realize 9 years old was the new teenager.)

Her brother loved it though. He was hilarious when the Death Star blew up. "They turned into sprinkles!"

Took a sick day, been up since 6am, so far have marathon'd:
Bloodrayne 2
Bloodrayne 3
In The Name of the King
In The Name of the King 2

It's been a day for Uwe Boll kind of fun.

The Adventures of Tintin

I just got back from seeing Tintin. I was a little bit disappointed, but it was still pretty good. There are a few story flaws and the first portion of the film is a little weak, but once it gets going, it really gets going. There is a chase sequence that has to be seen to be believed.

Spy Kids 4

Oh, don't look at me with that tone of voice. Wait...

Anyway, I've been a fan of the series ever since the first one (though the second and third pale in comparison). And this was fun and nothing else. Honestly, the main baddie in this felt like a crazy Silver Age super villain complete with his own personalized army, so that was fun. My biggest beef is that I'm unsure if this should've been called Spy Kids since the majority of the plot focused on Jessica Alba as a spy mom. Sure, the kids were there, but they felt marginalized between Alba, as well as appearances by the two original Spy Kids...who got a lot more screentime than I expected. Still, Alba in tight leather is never something to complain about...nor is Alexa Vega. So, a win there.

Super 8

I really regret not seeing this in theatres. I think MovieBob's ho-hum review of it turned me away. And I'm kicking myself because I really enjoyed this. This movie was pretty much made with my generation in mind: the grown up geeks who loved the hell out of E.T., The Goonies, etc. And it was all that. This was a Speilberg movie as seen through the eyes of J.J. Abrams. And I dug the hell out of it. Definitely going to buy the Blu-Ray for this when I have the money.

How the hell could you not enjoy Super 8?

Anyways, saw a FUCKton of movies in the theater today. Took the girl to a triple feature all-day-a-thon.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. It wasn't shitty I guess is about the best compliment I could give it. I liked the first one more, it had less machine gun battles.

Oh fuck, it just dawned on me why I disliked it. There was really no mystery. He knows it's Moriarty from the get go.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Agree with Charlie here, this one might as well not have had a villain. It was fun and all but even during the pivotal climax scene I felt almost zero tension for what was going on.

Tintin
The one I enjoyed the most. A lot of fun to watch. There's a pretty amazing sequence in the movie that puts all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to absolute shame. Also, man it seemed like Daniel Craig was having way to much fun as the villain, almost couldn't tell it was him most of the time. I would love for more Tintin stories to be adapted. NEXT UP, THE ONE WHERE HE GOES TO THE CONGO! DO IT!

Predictable, I can agree with at least partly. It was meant to be like an old Speilberg movie. He bloody well produced it.

Slow paced? Maybe compared to today's standards of pacing.
Boring? Hell, I wasn't bored.

So basically:

Sorry, I don't mean to be so snippy. For whatever reason, I just re-read a lot of Norris' "cell phone" thread.

That's just it Spielberg is very hit or miss for me. Either I'm VERY entertained or sleep induced bored. This one just happened to be the latter.

Couple of my misses would be:
Eagle Eye
MiB2
Jurassic Park 2&3 (Though they had their moments)
A.I.
Deep Impact
etc

I mean he has more hits, but I found Super8 to fall into those categories.

Masters of the Universe.

Holy shit, I hated this movie when I was a kid. Hated it because it was nothing like the cartoon show. And now for that exact reason I realize how good it is. It's one of the few cartoon to live action movies that works as is. The story is great. Skeletor isn't a bumbling fool - he is pure evil lusting for the power of the universe. The only qualm I had was the amount of techno-babble in the movie. I understand this was an 80's concept in film that hasn't aged well (more fancy technology was the wow factor where in the 2000 decade we saw regression to a more gritty/primitive narrative), so I would have preferred more "ancient magic and muscle" being involved during the ending scene and with castle Grayskull.

Man talk about an under appreciated movie in its time...

Does it really count if he's just an executive producer, as is the case with some of those? I know Spielberg was once more hands-on with movies that had him in the producing credits, but I don't know how true that is now considering how many movies give him that credit, particularly ones with their quality attributed to other people (True Grit, Cowboys & Aliens, Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima movies.)

A. I. - This was a bit too ambitious. It's like they mashed up Pinocchio and Bicentennial Man, but did it in the worst way possible. Is there any Asimov adaption that doesn't suck?

Minority Report - I know EXACTLY what the problem was with this one: They focused way too much on the world and not enough on the characterization. By the end of the movie, you still never really gave a fuck about any of the people involved.

Jurassic Park 2 - This one's simple: It was hijacked by a conservation/environmental message that really didn't make sense to begin with, which fucked with the plot.

Super 8 - Characters that were so generic/cliche they could have been exchanged with no issue, simple plot with no depth, wait the entire film to "reveal" the creature and it leaves a feeling of complete disappointment after it does, no real conclusion to the creature or it's plot that has anything to really do with the character's plights.
