Fehr is a hardliner. The faction of the NHLPA that put him into the director's chair knew that. They want to get back some of the concessions that resulted out of the L-word.

Problem is, I don't think Fehr realizes that Bettman might be more than willing to nuke another season to keep those gains.

And now the Bruins and Canucks just keep taking shots at eachother in the media. Both just look worse with every shot they take at one another.

The Leafs won again tonight, therefore those teams, who ever they were are irrelevant.
And Kulemin actually scored, and got a big hit to boot.
All in all a good game for Toronto. Though they were sloppy in the third. Lets see how they fair on Friday. But the mudslinging between Boston and Vancouver is still annoying as hell. Especially because when the Bruins and Marchand come out and lie through their teeth and say the hit was self defense, and/or was legal, it forces me to actually have to take Vancouver's side. *shudders*

Ugh. I'm not one who normally complains about the refs, but tonights Toronto-Ottawa game was just horribly officiated. Spezza SITS on Reimer and tips the goal in, and its not called interference. And Foligno gets away with a hit on Phaneuf that is IDENTICAL to the one Marchand received a 5 game suspension for just a while ago.
Mark this on your calendars, this is the first time I've been really upset with the refs.

"Gets away with" in that he got a penalty that you guys didn't score on. Sens won because Anderson wasn't letting anything in, plain and simple.

I ain't denying Anderson's got the moves, Reimer sucked tonight just like he sucked 6 games ago (To clarify, I like Reimer, but he has not been the same since coming back from his totallynotaconcussionwhatareyoutalkingaboutdon'tbesilly). But there are rules in place for a reason, and that that goal was allowed is just garbage. And I'd say the same thing were it the Leafs who scored, honest. I've often made the defending case for the refs, and normally roll my eyes at those who blame them for a loss.
But I'm not blaming the loss on the refs. Leafs would have lost anyway because Anderson was playing as the better goaltender, plain and simple. That doesn't excuse piss poor reffing.
And a 2min minor for a hit that could have ended a career is getting away with. It was a damned dirty hit. I'm glad Phaneuf took that into his own hands, though I would be happier if he had actually won the fight. Losing a fight doesn't really send the same message.

That hit was a barely-low hip check. They used to happen all the time, and still do fairly often - I'm not denying it was a penalty, but more than 2 minutes for a hit where Phaneuf was back up and on the ice for the powerplay would be overkill.

The rest I won't argue about - Spezza could have easily been called for interference on his goal, and the reffing was bad both ways. Has been in 90% of the games I've watched this season, and it's gone both for and against Ottawa. The Leafs were the better team for most of the game, but Anderson was having none of it, so the Sens got two points.

edit: here's a view of the hit:

Look at the point of contact - he hits just below Phaneuf's waist, and that's with Phaneuf jumping to avoid it. Clipping penalties are supposed to be for coming in below the knees, by my understanding, so while I won't argue a two minute call for what could have been a dangerous hit, more than that would be ridiculous.

Y'know, from those angles, I'll have to concede you're right on that hit.
Like I said, Ottawa would have won it anyway, just on goaltending alone. (Sadly that is the story of the Leafs this year. Their goaltenders have each had their hot streaks, but neither of them can consistently measure up to most of the other goalies in the league. )

Are there really game breaking dominant goalies any more? Only Quick in LA is really making a name as a goalie that is winning games this year. Boston has two good goalies posting great numbers, but they have a stud of team in front of them. Price is a good goalie but has nobody in front of him. The NHL feels like instead of great teams starting with great goaltending, it's great teams have a good goalie, good defence, good offence and a good farm team (for the revolving door of injuries each season). Is the new NHL a place where superstars are generated in the pages of the press and not on the ice?

Also, Go Leafs!

Anderson's been flat-out stealing games for about a month now. On a more regular basis, Rinne and Thomas have been amazing for the past couple years.

Rinne is the perfect example of a good goalie with a good defence in front of him.

Anderson, I must say is having a very surprising year.

*sigh*
Leafs lost again last night, and now even the Toronto Star is voicing doubts about making the playoffs this year.
On the other hand, my nephew went to Sick Kids Hospital last night for tests for a possible shunt malfunction, and was gifted with more free tickets to a Leafs game, once again solidifying why we love the team. They donate so much money to that hospital, visit it frequently, and have partnerships like this in place to lift the spirits of these kids.

In this particular case, its
The Citizen Maple Leafs Community MVP for December 2011 is Dion Phaneuf. Your Captain is a true ambassador for community leadership in Toronto. For the second year in a row, in partnership with Sick Kids Hospital, Dion has purchased a full suite for his "Phaneuf's Friends In The Captain's Corner" program. Over the season, this initiative, which Dion has committed over $100 thousand dollars to, will allow over 800 kids from Sick Kids Hospital to take in a real live game for every single Leafs and Raptors Home Game.
Not sure if this was the same program as last time. That was when he was going through the cancer treatment, so that might have been through something Curtis Jospeh set up.

Boston moved in to a tie for first in the Eastern Conference. Looks like that was a good game.
