Washington forward Alex Ovechkin has been suspended three games for a hit to the head of Pittsburgh's Zbynek Michalek during Sunday's Capitals-Penguins game.
The incident happened early in the second period. Michalek had just moved the puck around the corner boards in his own zone when Ovechkin left his feet on a check in the corner and hit Michalek in the head area. Ovechkin was not penalized on the play.
In his suspension video, league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan cites the fact that Ovechkin launched himself, "recklessly making contact with Michalek's head" as primary reasons for the suspension. Ovechkin's two previous suspensions, two previous fines and the fact that Michalek was able to return to the game were also factored into the league's decision on a three-game ban.
This is the third suspension of Ovechkin's career. He received a two-game suspension on Dec. 1, 2009 for a knee-on-knee hit to Carolina's Tim Gleason, and another two games on Mar. 15, 2010 for what the league called a "reckless" hit for boarding then-Chicago Blackhawk defender Brian Campbell.
Ovechkin will be able to return to action on Feb. 4, but will still be able to participate in this weekend's All-Star Game in Ottawa.
The hit in question:

Pretty blatant to me. I say fair call, but I also am first to admit I'm the opposite of an Ovechkin fan, so I am biased. Even still, I think the league needs to take a 100% no tolerance stance on head shots like they say they already do.

Why does he get to go to the all star game?

And what is up with with Tim Thomas?

Also, yay Leafs! Easy to have a great penalty kill when you don't take penalties.

Definite charging, not sure he intentionally targeted the head. Either way, 3 games doesn't seem unreasonable.

Two things I think are worth mentioning.
  1. Ovechkin has a history of this kind of behavior
  2. He allowed both feet to leave the ice in order to maximize the hit.

Apparently he was wondering the same question.

WASHINGTON—Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has decided he won’t participate in this weekend’s all-star game because of a three-game suspension handed to him by the NHL earlier in the week.
Ovechkin was suspended by the NHL on Monday but that does not prevent him from participating in the all-star events.
“My heart is not there. I got suspended so why do I have to go there,” Ovechkin told reporters.
“I love the game, it’s a great event, I’d love to be there but I’m suspended . . . If I’m suspended, I have to be suspended.”

Charging includes any crazy amount of distance used to specifically target a player; leaving your feet to maximize hit automatically gets you called for charging.

Boarding on the other hand, specifically involves violently checking into the boards while the target has their head turned.

His suspension is well placed as he's known to constantly do this kind of bullshit.

please get furries out of my hockey

Also, the Preds are killin it. Hottest team in the league going into the break. I'm getting nervous over what may happen at the trade deadline with our twin towers on Defense, though.

After the Oilers amazing start at the beginning of the season, it's depressing to watch them sink right back down into their fucking quagmire.

DEPRESSING.

Yeah, I get that part, even though the set up to that is kinda weak. I mean, only one thing said up until that point was something you could attribute "fail" to, and it was a whispered-off panel throw-away. I mean it is a huge fail, as Leafs fans area all-too-aware, so the joke makes sense, but the gag would have had a better pay off if there was actually something to tie the set up to the punch line.

But what I don't get is what the wolf(?) is supposed to be doing on the right in that panel. Is she having a heart attack? What's that got to do with the last panel?

If I were a leaf fan what would concern me most about the strip is the fact that even furries think the leafs are a joke.

whew, I'm glad I didn't miss a memo and Halforums was now furry central

So, in other news, the Wings got embarassed last night by the Habs, the Predators are the hottest team in the NHL, AND tonight is the fantasy draft that is the best thing in all of pro sports all star games

Team Chara, the team to beat! All who say otherwise are ignorant savages living in a delusional world of green soup.

Wait, wait... YOU are a Predators fan?

I thought I was the resident Preds fan!?!?!????

:OO

Yeah, I'm from Nashville born and raised. Grew up going to more Predators games than Titans games and basically got into hockey. Had partial season tickets from the season before the lockout until I graduated college and left. I was really lucky that timing worked out for me to go to the Red Wings game while I was up for Xmas.

Don't ever try and post on the official NHL forums. Talk about an old boys club...

On the Penguins board, if you're not consistently bitching about how poorly each and every player is preforming -- physical feats that you could only dream of doing from your armchair -- then you're ostracized as a Homer who knows nothing of the sport.

In other words, if you hate armchair quarterbacks and coaches, don't even look at those forums.

yeaaaaaaah most of the even moderately big sports forums are just unreadable. OH - I've also posted some on the SomethingAwful hockey threads, but I don't think enough for you to recognize me.

I also like most of the blogs here: www.sbnation.com

Oh is there an All-Star game going on this weekend? I didn't realize, I guess because they decide to not have anyone go to represent Carolina.

I feel your pain. I remember the days when the Nashville rep ended up not going to the ASG because of injury or some other issue.

I wouldn't mind if there was an injury. It's the fact that not a single player was selected to participate, when they're still claiming all 30 teams are represented.

They're counting rookie picks. Justin Faulk.

But I do think they should have a different draft style in place, so that every team sends X number to the game, goalies could be the top three from both conferences.
