2011-2012 Season is Over (Kings take the Cup)

So the NHL season kicks off tonight with 3 games.

Flyers @ Bruins
Canadiens @ Maple Leafs
Penguins @ Canucks

Tomorrow my Hurricanes start their season at home against the Lightning, and a close friend of mine has 4 tickets on the 5th row. Who else is attending their team's home opener?

Ignore the scoring, look at the +/- he's turning into a defensive forward!

Also, Habs suck this year.

#19

Close Leafs game tonight. The first two periods were painful, but they tied it up in the third and from there on it was intense. Had to go to shootout, but won it.
This time Lupul did most of the heavy lifting. They need to get their other lines working though. Seriously.

#20

Timmus

Timmus

I just caught the last period and OT.

Is Lupul normally that fast?

#21

Then you missed Lupul's first goal of the night! He broke the net cam! The view from the net cam was great.

Tonight the season really starts for the Leafs. They have 9 of 10 points against teams they should beat. Tonight it's vs Boston on no rest, on the road.

Hit Boston hard early and they'll crumple for you. Trust me.

#27

Hit Boston hard early and they'll crumple for you. Trust me.
Coming out hard has been a major problem for the Leafs so far. They've been half-assing their way through 1st (and sometimes second) period.
And Boston is smart enough to put the pressure on Kessel, I'm sure.
This could be a depressing one.

#28

I think I'll post that every time it happens, pad my post count by another 10 or 15 by the end of the year.

Wings win again, best start since 1972. Tomorrow's game against Washington should be some damn good hockey.

See? This is just some spectacular hockey. By Washington.

Fuck.

#34

checkeredhat

Saturday Toronto-Montreal game rocked.
Bit disappointed in how the Philly game is going so far... Why is no one on the Leafs defense on Jagr duty?

#35

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

Leafs were exhausted that game, little to no rest for them. Same for Philly after the Leafs, no way they should lose to MTL or Jets. That game last night was wild.

#36

Vrii

Vrii

5 in a row. What the hell is going on here?

#37

checkeredhat

That streak ends tomorrow.

#38

Vrii

Vrii

If you can get ahead by 12 goals, I might call it a safe lead with the way this season's been going.

#39

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

I'm not actually that confident in this game. Gustavsson has been performing admirably but honestly he hasn't yet earned my faith, and tonight will be his 6th game in a row, after just playing last night. He's got to be getting tired. It should be a good game to watch though for sure.

#40

Vrii

Vrii

I'm actually not too worried about who wins - aside from a couple of blowout losses, the Sens have been really fun to watch this year regardless of wins and losses. They're really young and there's not much chance they end up in the playoffs, but it hasn't been this enjoyable to watch them play since the run to the cup finals.

Now I'm just hoping that Alfredsson doesn't miss too much time from the ridiculous cheapshot last night.

#41

Jay

Jay

And no league action is expected from it. Which I'd consider the first bad call of the Shanahan era.

#42

Vrii

Vrii

I don't understand how he could possibly get away with it. It's a blatant, aimed shot to the head of an unsuspecting and defenseless player - exactly what they've said for the past 2-3 years that they want out of the game. The only consolation is that they came back and won yesterday's game completely in spite of the refs trying to give it to New York.

#43

Jay

Jay

I totally agree. You'd think they'd learn their lesson after the Crosby debacle.

It's not the first time it's happened since and EVERY SINGLE time they let it go. (Ference on Halpern in the playoffs)

#44

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Gustavsson performed a lot better than I expected, but the result was pretty much what I anticipated. Fantastic game, even though Leafs lost. Ottawa is seriously a beast on the power play.

#45

Vrii

#57

checkeredhat

A shootout victory is better than a shootout loss, at any rate. I'll take it, but the Leafs have yet to have a full game where they played solid through all three periods, and they can't make it for much longer playing one-two good periods every game.

#58

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

The Leafs are dropping like flies. With all the injuries going into this game, I'm not sure if I even want to watch. It could be brutal.

I'm glad Brian Burke finally realized neither Gustavsson or Scrivens are really ready and they need to look into getting another goaltender. Should really have thought of it a long time ago though.

#60

No need for the showboating at the end there. Especially since Rosehill was still going, not like he knocked him out or anything. He definitely won, but he didn't win so lopsided as to warrant the showboating.

Tonight's game went much better than expected.

#61

But the Leafs won. How could that be "better than expected"? That's a dang near miracle!

Didn't get to see the game due to it being exclusively on LeafsTV and my being in Toronto visiting my friend who doesn't have cable, but kept refreshing tsn's website to watch the score. Looking at the Shots on goal and penalty minutes, looks like the Leafs pooped themselves out in that Washington game. Hopefully tomorrow's rest means a good game on Tuesday.

#83

I don't get how an example of two American teams's getting a bad schedule because of a Canadian holiday is unrelated to a Canadian team getting a bad schedule due to an American one. Covar's example was indeed relevant as I saw it. But I don't get why the schedules would have been adjusted in that way, anyway. If anything, there should have been no games on Canadian Thanksgiving, just as the entire league shut down for the American Thanksgiving yesterday. 'Specially since like 60% the league are Canadians anyway.

I can't say how much I hate PK Subban. All the fucker does is slewfoot everyone ALL THE TIME! He did it tonight to Pascal Dupius. He did it to the Rangers not too long ago. He took runs at people all day yesterday in Philly.

#90

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

He's got skills, but yeah I can't stand him. Cheap shots like that, diving, and trash talking but refusing to back any of it up when the bigger players come after him...

#91

Mathias

Mathias

Ah, nothing better than the Penguins being the Habs.

Except the Penguins beating the Habs on a total garbage goal because the ref didn't see the puck covered up by Price. To be fair, they teach you to keep your full weight on the puck once you glove it in like... peewee hockey. Price was all like, "ok ref, I fondled the puck, blow the whistle."

#92

Jay

Jay

Take off your rose-color tinted glasses people.

His job isn't to drop the gloves against the big boys. His job is play sound defensively, to be able to provide good outlet passes and to contribute offensively when he can. He's currently in his sophromore season, he's adapting in his new role as 3 of Montreal's top 6 defensemen are injured (until Gill came back this week, we only had 2 NHL defensement out of 6). He's eating a lot of minutes 30+ a game and doing very well. If he's able to get under the skin of other players and give them a hard time and have them hate him, all the better.

If you can't appreciate him for all he can bring, I'll only assume you got Subbang envy.

As far as this game goes, GG Refs on allowing the Pens on that winning goal. How long does a goalie need to have his hand over the puck before the whistle goes?

The answer is simple, a long time, so that the Crosby show can go on. Crosby gets shoved a bit, a penalty. Why? Can't touch poster boy. Meanwhile, Subban gets hauled down from behind. NOPE, no call. Moen gets tripped from behind a minute before Stall scores his goal? NOPE.

Letang gets crushed by Max Pac. Max Pac will get 3 games for it. Mr. Dangles came in, sees a player come towards him, thinks he won't him him, lowers head and takes a shot, BANG. Think again.

Maybe Price should sit next time on it to appease the homer Pen fans who think otherwise. God knows Fleury does as he flops around everywhere trying to get interference calls all night.

GJ on the "winning goal". LOL

Off to the next game, where the Refs won't try to appease the Crosby show and do their jobs right.

#93

Mathias

Mathias

sooooooo stomping on and tripping people with your skate is sound defensive play now?

And yeah, Price should have dumped his entire weight on the puck as soon as he knew it was under his glove. I was taught that playing PeeWee.

Kunitz had two goals taken away from the reffing in this game. Talk about rose tinted glasses...

it was actually called the same both ways.

#94

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

He does do a good job playing sound defense. like I said, he's a good player. Its his attitude I don't like. He also does a great job of performing illegal hits and not getting called on it.

#95

Jay

Jay

Don't be a homer. Both of his goals were taken away for good reason and it's not even debatable.

If you punch a puck into the net in a forward motion it is considered the same thing as kicking the puck in. If you run into the goaltender and push him and the puck in the net while you're on a breakaway, it's interference.

When a goalie puts his glove over the puck, the Ref's job is to whistle, you don't stand in the corner and look pretty while the seconds go by and allow the other team to poke, jab and chop at the goalie to get the puck.

Nonetheless, I'm done with this thread for tonight, responding to homers from other teams is never going to lead to anything. I'm just pleased I wasn't called a frog yet.

#96

Mathias

Mathias

haha, Habs fans are such sore losers...

I enjoy Pens victories over Montreal almost as much as over the Flyers and Capitals.

And I'm not saying it wasn't a garbage goal. It totally was, but that game went both ways. That second goal was the officials call. We got away with a win this game. muhahhahahahaahaha

#97

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Meh. Everybody sees the game through rose-tinted glasses favouring their team. Having watched most of the playoffs for the past few years with no real investment in either team, I have to say more often than not the reffing is either fair, or equally bad for both teams. Not to say it doesn't happen that they're favouring one team over another. It definitely does, but I don't think its as common practice as the fans think it is.
I can't remember if it was the Pittsburgh/ Montreal game or the Boston/ Winnipeg game tonight (I flipped between the two, for the first two periods) whereI saw a discounted goal, but it was CLEARLY 3-4 seconds after the ref had blown the whistle, yet the home team stands still booed the call. Rose tinted glasses indeed.

#98

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Nonetheless, I'm done with this thread for tonight, responding to homers from other teams is never going to lead to anything. I'm just pleased I wasn't called a frog yet.
Y'know, so am I. I don't see the point in name calling, especially bigoted slurs, over hockey fandom. I get the arguing and good natured ribbing, and accept the very clearly lopsided view all sports fans have in regards to their own teams' players, but I accept it all as just that: hockey fandom. I'd like to think that at the end of the day, someone liking Sidney Crosby, Joffrey Lupul or PK Subban more than the other two is not a real point of contention between those two people.

#99

blotsfan

I can't say it hasn't been coming. We have the talent to be a good team, it just hasn't been getting done.

I'm a little surprised that they didn't replace Mo with Jeff Daniels (of the Charlotte Checkers, Hurricanes AHL affiliate), but we've got a good farm team going so they probably didn't want to screw that up yet.

Last time we changed out our coach (also around this time) we wound up going to the Eastern Conference Finals, so who knows? Change starts now.

The fans in Toronto are ALL TOO AWARE that the Leafs haven't won since 67. Exactly.
Also, glad I watched the Leafs game at a bar tonight. It means I got to drink during yet another loss to the Bruins. To be fair, Toronto played a better game tonight than the last two games. It was more back and forth, though Boston dominated in the third, goaltending played a bigger role in this game than the last two, and I don't think there's shame in being beaten by Tim Thomas.
Wish Ron Wilson hadn't pulled Gustavsson with 2:00min to go AGAIN. I am not dumb enough to think we could have won, or even optimistic enough to think we could have scored one, but atleast we could have kept it at 5-3. 6-3 is just embarassing.

I'm afraid to look at the standings now. I know Toronto was perched very precariously.

Big NHL news day. Ducks fire Carlyle and immediately pick up Boudreau. Wonder how this will play out.
Meanwhile everyone's gearing up for Washington and Pittsburg to play eachother for the first time since Crosby's return, and a new coach for the Capitals, and now the game's into the third and not even an assist from either Crosby or Ovechkin.

Every story needs a villain. Ovechkin fills that role really well every time Canada plays Russia in the IIHF World Championship or in the Olympics.
But yes. So very yes.
A very minor side rant related to Ovechkin:
I don't know if you guys are familiar with Mr. Big chocolate bars. I'm pretty sure they're Canadian, but I think they're still sold in parts of the states.
Anyway, they have these commercials running feeaturing Ovechkin as their new spokesman. What a terrible marketing choice for a Canadian chocolate bar. There aren't many less popular players among Canadians that they could have picked.

#129

Vrii

Is that a joke? Ovechkin is probably the second-most popular player in the league, behind Crosby. There's a reason their rivalry is played up so much.

#130

Sorry. I realize he's actually very popular, but I meant specifically among Canadians. That's why I specified that its a Canadian chocolate bar.
I've edited the post to clarify. He does have his fans here, mostly little kids who like him just for his theatrics, but otherwise, not really.
The rivalry here was played up before either were even playing in the NHL, because of the IIHF World Juniors and Ovechkin being such a dominant force there. So he's been the villain in hockey media for years.

Is that a joke? Ovechkin is probably the second-most popular player in the league, behind Crosby. There's a reason their rivalry is played up so much.

Eh, they have entirely different playstyles. I'd say the best Pens-Caps "rivalry" would be Malkin and Ovechkin, since at least there you're comparing apples to apples.

Grape Ape is popular among the younger fans and the hockey Homers (i.e. almost all Caps fans) because he's a showboat. He puts on a good, fast hockey show. Crosby is more subtle - assist here, pass there, and the occasional amazing goal. Crosby is very good at reading the play and contributing to make a goal. He doesn't have to score. Ovechkin is good at plowing through at insane speed, and laser shooting the puck to score.

Ovechkin is a very good player, but Crosby wins fundamentals, puck handling, and team play hands down. I gotta admit Ovechkin is pretty hilarious off the ice while Crosby is more clean cut and maintains a sort of modesty and quietness about him. Again this is why the younger people love Ovechkin (the same people that love Jackass characters), and think Crosby's a pansy.

This is hilarious btw...

Huge conference realignment. This looks like its gonna be a lot of fun. I'm really glad the Sabres get to be in one of the 7 team conferences rather than an 8 team one. My only major problem is that its gonna be a lot harder for us to play Philly in the playoffs.

Patrick = Lemieux (Washington, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Rangers, Carolina, Islanders)
Norris = Howe (Detro-yit, Chicago, Nashville, Dallas, Saint Louis, Minnesota, Columbus, Winnipeg)

Leafs just couldn't catch a break, even when they're dominating the play the puck's still not going in, and Reimer just let in some seriously soft goals. And Foligno gets away with a hit on Phaneuf that is IDENTICAL to the one Marchand received a 5 game suspension for just a while ago.
Mark this on your calendars, this is the first time I've been really upset with the refs.

"Gets away with" in that he got a penalty that you guys didn't score on. Sens won because Anderson wasn't letting anything in, plain and simple.
I ain't denying Anderson's got the moves, Reimer sucked tonight just like he sucked 6 games ago (To clarify, I like Reimer, but he has not been the same since coming back from his totallynotaconcussionwhatareyoutalkingaboutdon'tbesilly). But there are rules in place for a reason, and that that goal was allowed is just garbage. And I'd say the same thing were it the Leafs who scored, honest. I've often made the defending case for the refs, and normally roll my eyes at those who blame them for a loss.
But I'm not blaming the loss on the refs. Leafs would have lost anyway because Anderson was playing as the better goaltender, plain and simple. That doesn't excuse piss poor reffing.
And a 2min minor for a hit that could have ended a career is getting away with. It was a damned dirty hit. I'm glad Phaneuf took that into his own hands, though I would be happier if he had actually won the fight. Losing a fight doesn't really send the same message.

#194

Vrii

Vrii

That hit was a barely-low hip check. They used to happen all the time, and still do fairly often - I'm not denying it was a penalty, but more than 2 minutes for a hit where Phaneuf was back up and on the ice for the powerplay would be overkill.

The rest I won't argue about - Spezza could have easily been called for interference on his goal, and the reffing was bad both ways. Has been in 90% of the games I've watched this season, and it's gone both for and against Ottawa. The Leafs were the better team for most of the game, but Anderson was having none of it, so the Sens got two points.

edit: here's a view of the hit:

Look at the point of contact - he hits just below Phaneuf's waist, and that's with Phaneuf jumping to avoid it. Clipping penalties are supposed to be for coming in below the knees, by my understanding, so while I won't argue a two minute call for what could have been a dangerous hit, more than that would be ridiculous.

#195

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Y'know, from those angles, I'll have to concede you're right on that hit.
Like I said, Ottawa would have won it anyway, just on goaltending alone. (Sadly that is the story of the Leafs this year. Their goaltenders have each had their hot streaks, but neither of them can consistently measure up to most of the other goalies in the league. )

Are there really game breaking dominant goalies any more? Only Quick in LA is really making a name as a goalie that is winning games this year. Boston has two good goalies posting great numbers, but they have a stud of team in front of them. Price is a good goalie but has nobody in front of him. The NHL feels like instead of great teams starting with great goaltending, it's great teams have a good goalie, good defence, good offence and a good farm team (for the revolving door of injuries each season). Is the new NHL a place where superstars are generated in the pages of the press and not on the ice?

Also, Go Leafs!

TSN said:
Washington forward Alex Ovechkin has been suspended three games for a hit to the head of Pittsburgh's Zbynek Michalek during Sunday's Capitals-Penguins game.
The incident happened early in the second period. Michalek had just moved the puck around the corner boards in his own zone when Ovechkin left his feet on a check in the corner and hit Michalek in the head area. Ovechkin was not penalized on the play.
In his suspension video, league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan cites the fact that Ovechkin launched himself, "recklessly making contact with Michalek's head" as primary reasons for the suspension. Ovechkin's two previous suspensions, two previous fines and the fact that Michalek was able to return to the game were also factored into the league's decision on a three-game ban.
This is the third suspension of Ovechkin's career. He received a two-game suspension on Dec. 1, 2009 for a knee-on-knee hit to Carolina's Tim Gleason, and another two games on Mar. 15, 2010 for what the league called a "reckless" hit for boarding then-Chicago Blackhawk defender Brian Campbell.
Ovechkin will be able to return to action on Feb. 4, but will still be able to participate in this weekend's All-Star Game in Ottawa.
The hit in question:

Pretty blatant to me. I say fair call, but I also am first to admit I'm the opposite of an Ovechkin fan, so I am biased. Even still, I think the league needs to take a 100% no tolerance stance on head shots like they say they already do.

The Toronto Star said:
WASHINGTON—Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has decided he won’t participate in this weekend’s all-star game because of a three-game suspension handed to him by the NHL earlier in the week.
Ovechkin was suspended by the NHL on Monday but that does not prevent him from participating in the all-star events.

Definite charging, not sure he intentionally targeted the head. Either way, 3 games doesn't seem unreasonable.
Charging includes any crazy amount of distance used to specifically target a player; leaving your feet to maximize hit automatically gets you called for charging.

Boarding on the other hand, specifically involves violently checking into the boards while the target has their head turned.

His suspension is well placed as he's known to constantly do this kind of bullshit.

I wouldn't mind if there was an injury. It's the fact that not a single player was selected to participate, when they're still claiming all 30 teams are represented.

They're counting rookie picks. Justin Faulk.

But I do think they should have a different draft style in place, so that every team sends X number to the game, goalies could be the top three from both conferences.

Fair enough, I don't disagree. Especially seeing as its just "for the fans" (translation: for the TV ratings), it really would be in their best interest to have each team well represented. Like you said, Carolina fans had no reason to tune in this year.

That game should be replayed, starting with a four-on-four OT.

EDIT: The rule in question:

34.7 Verification of Time - Any loss of time on the game or penalty clocks due to a false face-off must be replaced as appropriate. The Video Goal Judge may be consulted to ensure the time is accurately replaced.
In the event of any dispute regarding time, the matter shall be referred to the Referees for adjudication and their decision shall be final. They may use the Video Goal Judge to assist in rendering their final decision. (See Rule 38 – Video Goal Judge.) The Game Timekeeper shall assist to verify game time using an additional timing device (League-approved stopwatch).
In the event that clock fails to operate when play resumes, the on-ice officials may elect to stop play provided there is no imminent scoring opportunity or wait until the next legitimate stoppage of play. In cooperation with the Game Timekeeper and the Video Goal Judge, the clock is to be re-set to the appropriate time.
In the event that a video replay shows a goal was scored prior to the play being stopped, the Video Goal Judge will inform the Game Timekeeper and Official Scorer of the time of goal and the amount of playing time left to be reset on the game clock.

Leafs phoned in what may well be their absolute worst game of the season last night. Even on the power play, they just looked bored and lazy. To lose 5-0 is one thing, to do it without even trying to fight back is another. Last two games BROWN has been their best player on the ice, and that's sad.

Let's talk about something else. You guys think there's any validity to the rumours circling the Coyotes right now or do you think they'll continue trying to keep the team in Phoenix for yet another struggling year (again)?
I've heard Seattle, Quebec City, Kansas and Vegas. Hamilton and Markham have been mentioned too, but that comes up every year and is always shat on by Bettman. Nobody actually expects a second team so close to Toronto. Honestly none of them seem like good options to me. Quebec could support the team but there's no way they'd have their arena ready in time for next season.

Strongest rumours I have heard are Seattle. Hee hee C AT L heh heh heh it's just so fun to say. The NHL is promoting a "storm of interest" in keeping them in Phoenix, but are incredibly vague about who the interested parties would be. Hamilton will never have a team, it's financially un-viable with the competition clauses between the Sabres and Leafs.

#290

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

With the pending necessary realignment, I can see why they might want to keep them in Phoenix for at least one more year. They don't want to mess up the schedules for next year, following the Winnipeg thing. If they can finally settle on a realignment, they'll have to relocate the Coyotes somewhere where it'll fit in so they don't have to realign the whole league yet again.
And yeah, Hamilton won't ever get an NHL team, they just want to prove they can measure up to big brother Toronto. The entire city of Hamilton seems to have some kind of complex regarding Toronto.

#291

jwhouk

jwhouk

The only people that seem to strongly believe that the Coyotes are being relocated are located north of the US-Canadian border.

There have been times I've wondered if I could call up a Toronto radio station and start a rumour that Phil Kessel is quitting hockey to become a mountain climber - and see how far it would get.

Haha, The trade rumours coming out of Toronto are downright laughable. So much talk about moving players like Kadri and Kulemin and somehow getting Getzlaf, Perry, or, I shit you not, I heard Iginla, for them.

What bugs me is that almost all of the actually reasonable ones seem to involve trading Grabovski, who I think is the best two-way player the Leafs have. I know he's becoming an unrestricted free agent, so they might as well get something for him before his price goes up, but they'd have to get a real all star for him for me to consider it worth it, and no team is willing to give up their star player for a palyer like Grabovski.

I've often wondered why Seattle doesn't have an NHL franchise. With support for NFL, MLB, and NBA franchises you would think they would certainly have the support for a hockey team. I'd imagine it would be easier than keeping interest in places like San Jose, Phoenix, and Southern Florida.

See, that's just it. "The Wish List" for your "Typical Maple Leafs Fan" is the best player on any of the 29 other teams in the NHL.

Thing is, if the Leafs ever did get the 29 guys on every other team, one of the other 29 teams would still win the Stanley Cup. Because there is no person in this universe who could get a team of 29 All-Stars to play together for an entire season.

And ESPECIALLY not in Toronto.

#304

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Yes, but you surrounded it in the idea that the only thing you could get that's better than a second/third line player is an All-Star.
I'll try and explain myself better, because clearly I'm doing a really poor job of communicating. Which is fair enough, I've for some reason stumbled into a tremendous, inexplicable week long brain-fart that has gotten me into a couple of arguments this week with people I wasn't even disagreeing with to begin with.

Grabovski, while not giving quite as much offensive output as the first line, has, in my opinion, been the Leafs' most consistent player in both ends. His defensive game and his offensive game are both good. Not amazing, but good. And he's stepped it up recently, too late to have a really breakout year, but still.... He is an all-around player, a sort of jack of all trades, on a team of specialists. And I think Toronto needs that. It makes him more of an asset for the Leafs than it does a hot commodity for trade. Even Kessel and Lupul are on the ice for nearly as many goals as they score.
What I'm saying is that given that, why trade him unless you can trade up? Obvsiously, that's kind of the philosophy all accross the board, and I don't think they'll be able to move him, so let's just keep him. And Burke has said over and over again that he's looking for a high producing, play making centre to compliment Lupul and Kessel, and does not seem to be interested in improving the team defensively in any way. With that in mind, I was saying that if they're going for an offensive producer for the first line which has done fine offensively all season without a consistent centre, and removing the highest producing member of Kulemin's line, he'd better be a damned high scorer to make up for the defensive hole they aren't filling. I used "all-star" as hyperbole to make my point, but I stick by my assessment.

I'm still of the mind that Boston will win it all again this year. Been my mind set since they got back into their groove in October.

Also I saw my first AHL game tonight. Not worth posting a new thread about, but its sort of related to the NHL thread anyway. Marlies beat the Adirondack Phantoms (Who I didn't even realize until I got there were the Philadelphia AHL affiliate) 2-1 in OT. An excellent game. Also I'm a tad drunk still.

Breakin news folks! Ever since Alyonka Larionov has appeared on television, the trades have exploded out of the gate! We have two, yes two trades to report on since the lovely Ms Larionov has appeared on TSN.

Mike Commodore has left Detroit and landed in Tampa Bay. Detroit will receive a conditional 2013 7th round pick. Conditional meaning if nobody is worth drafting 196th overall next year, Detroit will receive a coupon for a free Shamrock Shake.

And putting our earlier trade to shame, Edmonton and Minnesota have actually swapped players! Most startling in this trade is the idea that these two defencemen actually play in the NHL. Nick Shultz for Tom Gilbert, which team got which doesn't seem to matter.

Mixed feelings n the trade deadline for me. I can't believe Nashville actually gave us a first rounder for Gaustad. He's a decent 3rd/4th line center, but he's gonna be a UFA. We fleeced you.
Looking at the Hodgson trade, it sounds like its a good deal on paper, but I just don't like giving Kassian away. I was really looking forward to watching him develop. I think he's gonna be great for vancouver down the line.

Was wondering what a Buffalo fan thought of that trade. From a Canucks perspective it sucks to lose Hodgson he was really becoming a fan favorite over here. He's NHL ready and should be an immediate contributor in your lineup. Kassian sounds like he could be a good fit provided translate his AHL success to the NHL. Here's hoping this trade is beneficial for both sides. I like when the sabres are doing well.

Was just about to post that. Just found out 10 min ago. Walking home, skipping from station to station, hear BTO and settle on good old Q107. Dominic Diamond comes on and says Ron Wilson's fired and it looks like Carlyle will take over.

I'm not terribly shocked but honestly I don't see the point in firing him now. Its not likely that a new coach is going to come in, instantly gain the trust and respect of his new squad, and lead the Leafs into a 19 game winning streak. Might as well have let him close out the season on his own, with whatever dignity he was able to keep left (Or to let him resign, "voluntarily")

Plus I don't think I like Carlyle as the replacement. I'm pretty sure I read there's some bad blood between he and Lupul. I liked the other choice better, of bringing up Eakins from the Marlies, who he's coached into a VERY comfy spot in the AHL standings this year. He's a good fit for a young team, and he'll likely be coaching the NHL in the not to distant future, but its doubtful it will be for the Leafs now.

OK once and for all lets settle this thing.

There is no rivalry between Toronto fans and Ottawa fans. It's been 20yrs and nothing has changed. Ottawa fans are simply Toronto fans that can't afford tickets to the Toronto games.

Tonight the Ottawa crowd booed heavily every time they touched the puck but cheered every hit and goal for Toronto. Now remember folks Ottawa is fighting for a play off spot and the division championship. Toronto has only fleeting play off hopes. Seriously that stadium should have been screaming for the Sens all night long, but instead nothing but crickets.

TL : DR No such thing as an Ottawa Senators fan.

QUEBEC -- It's official. Quebec City says it will begin construction on a new NHL-style arena this September.
Now all the city needs is a team to play in it.
Mayor Regis Labeaume announced Sunday the $400-million arena will hold about 18,000 people, saying it would be comparable to a facility built for the league's Pittsburgh Penguins a year ago.
Has Seattle officially started building an arena yet?
Seattle still sounds more likely, but damn if Quebec doesn't want it.

The Leafs can be fighting just to hold on to 12th in the conference, and the Star will still refer to them as "on the playoff bubble". Even if the Leafs swept all 6 remaining games, they'd still be 6 points behind the projected minimum to make the playoffs.

#430

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

There's a formula and graph out there for the Leafs chances of making the playoffs this year. It's rather funny.

General rule of thumb is expect the 8th place team to play at 65% win rate, multiplied by the number of games they have remaining. Subtract your points from this total+1 and divide by 2 times the number of games you have remaining to determine how your winning percentage required.

Thusly the Leafs must have a winning percentage of 142% over the next 6 games to make it into the play offs.

Is it still mathematically possible for Winnipeg to make into the playoffs? I was looking forward to sseeing them in the playoffs. Their home games are already INSANE just in regular season.

I'm going to try and make it to an AHL playoff game if I can this year. Marlies are doing really well. I'm surprised Toronto doesn't support them a whole lot more, honestly. Tickets are like 10% of the cost of the Leafs tickets and they play hard.

That actually freakily lines up with the Star's projected 93 point minimum for the 8th place team. The number of points necessary for that when I said it would have translated to a 150% win rate.

BUF ANA
PHI LAK
TBL DET
Squeeking into the playoffs
NYR MIN
TOR DAL
Just falling short
CAR EDM
MTL COL
NJD STL
Out of contention
FLA PHO
WIN CAL
OTT NAS
NYI CBJ

So wtf Florida and Anaheim?
So how did I do?

East
NYR - Wow, wtf?
BOS - Ah yiss
FLO - OK who let these guys in here?
PIT - Well, didn't win the Div but Crosby missed so much time.
PHI - right about where I said they would
NJD - Wow
WAS - close fight for their division so not too far off
OTT - wow
BUF - slightly surprising, wonder if the concussion to Miller cost them just enough points
TBL - their goaltending dissappeared
WIN - they fought awful hard, but the travel was just too much for them, great year though and profitable!
CAR - expected
TML -
NYI - expected
MTL - expected and will repeat for a few years

West
VAN - do they have the toughness for the finals this year?
STL - wow I was so right to begin the year, then Hitchcock arrived and damn!
PHO - pleasantly surprised
NAS - happy to see this, I really expected Rinne to miss a lot of time due to Prongeritis
DET - not bad
CHI - not bad
SJS - weird, thought they would be a few positions higher
LAK - lets see if all that money will make a difference
CAL - please trade Iggy to a decent team and Kipper to the Leafs
DAL - hmmm, don't know
COL - next year baby
MIN - expected better
ANA - what happened?!
EDM - expected
CLB - expected

So 10 / 16 for play off picks. Somebody get me a TSN analyst position pronto!

Using my keen senses you wish to point out that the player was indeed offside?

Or possibly that Mr Weber has some explaining to do...

BErt

A bit disappointed in Weber. I like and respect him as a player, and that was just not cool. That was Pronger uncool.

Just an ugly game from beginning to end...I hope we get better officiating going forward, for both sides. But lucky bounces are part of the playoffs and whatnot. And that last goal by Bourque was a beauty.

Plus I guess it could be worse. I could be a Pens fan :troll face that I apparently can't do because I'm on an iPad:

...This, of course, coming from a fan of a team that has Todd ####ing Bertuzzi on their roster.

Weber may get a game out of that, max. I'm leaning more towards a big fine. Hank skated away and is probably damn lucky he didn't get a diving call.

Shea did send a bit of a message, though: "We're not your little brother anymore."

BErt

I don't pick the roster, so I won't get into the whole Bertuzzi thing. And I'm not calling for Weber's head, I just said I was disappointed...but calling a dive on Hank there is nonsense.

Regardless, congrats on winning game 1, you guys were the better team. The homer in me forces me to believe the Wings will win in 6 but I could just as easily see Preds in 5. I really, really wanted nothing to do with this series.

$2500 fine for Weber, no suspension as expected.

Helm is out for the season.

Bitz to have hearing today on his hit.

I nearly shat myself yesterday. I'm still pissed today about it. I'll be over it tomorrow.

Meh, you could pull a knife on a guy in the NHL and only get a fine if they guy you victimize doesn't get hurt.

Tap him with your stick and he misses a game? Well now we're talking 15+ games...

#494

BErt

Honestly I'm shocked Weber didn't get a 3 year suspension since bettman was in the house last night. I assumed that was the only reason Detroit and Nashville had like 5 billion penalties between them since that was all the announcers were talking about.

#495

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

No the NHL has been very busy falling over themselves apologizing for the offside goal.

#496

jwhouk

The officials in the NAS-DET game were calling all sorts of ticky-tack stuff because GB was in the house. Problem was, the refs were paying attention to everything except cheap shots as the game wound down.

These two teams do NOT like each other, and THAT is what the refs should have been paying attention to instead of "roughing" penalties.

I don't like your cat fish throwing thing. It's too close to the octopuss. Try something innovative like the fans in Toronto and throw waffles at the start of the season and golf balls at the end.

The league noted the fine was the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

I don't care for the arrogance of most Red Wings fans, so it's a wash.

Catfish fit the city of Nashville. Deal with it. :csi:

And I think it's adorable that Nashville thinks they're our rival (amidoingarrogantright?)

Anyway, it's still really weird switching from cnbc to "not vs" ...I miss the local CBC feed that directv won't let me have.
