[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

... where did his beard go in panels 3 and 4 today?

Is it just me or does Scott have a problem with light facial hair? This isn't the first time it's happened.

EDIT AS OF 2/1/2012: So that new character is clearly just Jean-Ralphio from "Parks and Recreation", right? Not just me?
He said it was Jean-Ralphio on Twitter. For some reason this annoys me. Create your own damn characters. Don't just make second rate obvious versions of others.

Yeah, gotta agree here. It's one thing when he uses a real person he knows as a visual template, it's something else entirely when he uses the look and actual character from someone else's work.

For some reason, I haven't liked the cole character in a long time. This time either. If PVP were describing real life people, I would be saying it's time for cole to seek "other opportunities." But I know he won't just vanish from the strip.

I don't know... it could just be intended as a pop culture reference, like when he used the CSI guys in a Jade Fontaine mysteries arc, or used Dr. House in the paintball arc.

But if the deal is accepted and the guy becomes a regular character... then yeah, it's pretty much character theft.

Don't ask how I remembered all that.

Yeah, I'm not against paying homage to a character you like, thats great, but this doesn't seem like paying homage, it just feels lazy, especially if its going to be a regular character.

Cole is the main antagonist of PVP, I've been saying it for years, at least in my own head...

And I don't know if he'll continue in the strip for a whole lot longer...

At least, before, he had cohorts. Now he's pretty much completely isolated from everybody else in the cast, and the evolution of his art evermore makes him look older and more tired and beaten with every passing month. I mean, he and brent are supposed to be the same age but now cole looks old enough to almost be his father.

PVP has been very meh lately. There was no real resolution to any of the good storylines he had. What happened with kringus? How about brents dad? It just feels like a comic with a horrible case of ADD. Just finish a damn story with a conclusive ending.

What did happen with Brents Dad? There was some joke about a nurse and brent being like his dad then... was that the conclusion?

I guess Kringus ended with Scratch leaving a kid in the woods or something, Brent's parents stayed for a couple weeks before going home apparently, and then this latest bullshit showing once again that Cole's an incompetent jerk, rather than only sane man (which is what he thinks he is). Yeah, the copied dude is a giant douchebag, but his connections and resources could revitalize the magazine and Cole should be smart enough to realize that.

Your assuming the new guy is AT ALL competent, which is something he didn't show off during his initial meeting. Being rich doesn't always have to do with being good at business. I suspect there is an equal chance of Cole being right about the guy.

My guess for how it plays out:
They'll hire him, lolbat, Cole will leave/fired, scratch arc, lolbat, the rich guy fails, scratch arc, lolbat, scratch arc, Cole comes back to save the day making everything back to normal for more lolbat and scratch stories.

He doesn't have to be competent to make Cole expendable.

You missed a Skull arc or two.

I hate that you're probably correct.

Signs you've been doing a comic/webcomic/whatever too long: the so-called fans can write out your storylines for the next year FOR you.

Aaaand the guy's still around. I'm gonna call character theft on this one.

The ironic thing is that Scott Kurtz once filed legal action against a fellow webcomics artist (Tahuid Bondia, writer of The Good Ship Chronicles and the now-nonexistant Spells and Whistles), claiming that two of Bondia's characters were rip-offs of one of his own (one was a fat blue fairy and the other was... a girl, I guess.)

I... really have no respect for Kurtz.

All right, I did some digging. Here's an image of the guy who Kurtz was saying was a rip-off of Skull (only he was blue)

And here's the girl who he claimed was a rip-off of Jade

\\

This was apparently enough to warrant legal action from him. But I guess he thinks it's okay for him to blatantly and admittedly rip off characters from other media.

There's an old comicgenesis forum topic on the subject here.

I gotta admit, put some sunglasses on the guy she's with, and that looks like brent and jade cosplaying.

Oh, but I do like the description of "fear of success."

If I remember correctly, Robbie just got rich by winning it big in the lottery. So the latest comic doesn't actually work since Robbie's not "a success". He was just goddamn lucky.
