Agreed. When one of the most dangerous and powerful abilities in the entire Marvel universe is used on someone, it should be obvious what is happening.
Most would argue that the franchise died with the first film. While I didn't find it as atrocious as some people, it really wasn't that great of a movie. Mostly due to two factors. He just plowed through the villains with absolutely zero effort and THIS:

There's no shortage of actresses in hollywood who are both wood-inducing and who can actually act.

And chalk this up as another movie that didn't deserve Idris Elba.
I can partly agree with that. What bothered me is that it felt like a series of unconnected moments, some of which were really well done (the entire sniper scene, for example). But it all felt so disconnected. There was no flow. I had no real feeling for any of the characters. I can sort of see why it was nominated, but it sure didn't deserve to win any of them.
The Hurt Locker was really awesome, sorry Avatar didn't win Best Picture.
The Hurt Locker was a cliched, Hollywood Army movie. None of the characters get fleshed out, so why give a shit about them? Just when you think you're starting to get the main character at the end, he gives his son a stupid little speech about loving stuff - cut to badass music and slowmotion walk in a bombsuit. Very Michael Bay, indeed. Who said anything about Avatar?

I'll give it that. And only that. The tense moments were really tense, and accomplish what they set out to do. The editing is horrible though.
It was very much not a Hollywood Michael Bay movie. Are you insane? It was subdued and personal, and showed the psychological effects of war in general and this war in particular. Were you busy making popcorn during the beginning with the "War is a drug" quotation? It was kind of important.

The latest DC animated movie. Now personally, I think the Crisis on Two Earths movie was their best one to date. This one...doesn't quite meet that level. I'd say it's a respectable second. As always, there's a lot of solid action, some great character moments, and some interesting changes from the original story (Tower of Babel). That said, the solution to the big, final threat is a little silly. Of course, this is superheroes we're talking about, so it's one of those things that's still acceptable within the genre.

Personally it's in my top 2 or 3 flicks of last year. Thought it was really something great.
Marvel's live action movies have been consistently better than DC's showing. And vice versa when it comes to animated.
As far as New Frontier, I can't agree. Having read the comic, it's hard to see the animated movie as anything but a rushed, annotated version. They had so many things from the comic that they had to add in (and still had to leave a lot out). I'm not denying it's great, but it pales in comparison to the comic.
Different situation. They're not directly adapting a story almost word for word, shot for shot. Much like Watchmen, it's hard for me to enjoy the exact same story when it was done much better in comic book form.
See, I disagree again. I treated Watchman as a stand-alone movie with no previous source material and thought it was fantastic.
Same with Green Lantern, but that film was terrible.
I used to dislike ALOT of really good films because they didn't directly follow the source. I'm a much happier movie goer and geek in general thanks to it.

Yeah, I'm not having this argument. I'm tired of having it.
I'm just tired of having the argument about things like Watchmen and New Frontier. I'm not going to convince you that NF was basically an abridged version, missing a LOT of really good arcs within the epic. I'm not going to convince you that Dr. Manhattan doesn't work as the "fall guy". I've had this argument/discussion numerous times with other board members and I'm just tired of it.
I'm not trying to be a jerk about all this. I'm really not. I'm just tired of discussing the matter, that's all. I've honestly lightened up a lot over the last year or so (after taking a Film & Literature course, specifically, where we compared a book with its movie). And like I said, I liked New Frontier a lot. It's just honestly an annotated version of what I already read. I could be just pissed that they didn't have time to include Steel, that's all.

Regardless of adaptation issues, it still stands out as debatably the best DC animated movie that's been put out.
As Shego said, you have to make concessions with ANY adaptation. Especially because some people place far more personal emphasis on aspects of a story than other people do.

Sorry, that wasn't my intention. And like I said, I liked it. I have nothing against people that do. There's a lot to like about it. It'd definitely be in my top 5 of DC's animated movies. Towards the lower five, since there's the two I mentioned and All Star Superman.

Hurt Locker sucked ass, pull your mouth off the critics' cocks and you'd see that. It was pretty much the hipster art-house wanabe, douchebag little brother of Jarhead. But I was actually interested to see what happens to the main character in Jarhead, since I can actually remember the character's (Swaford) name. Quick without Googling it, what was the main character's name in Hurt Locker? Any of the characters? I knew them by "Asshole semi-protagonist", "whiny bitch guy", and "badass black dude with a heart of gold."
Oh wait. I get it. Something like Avatar is too mainstream to be good, right?
For the record, for that year, I would have totally pulled The Blind Side or A Serious Man for best picture. Those movies at least have - you know - a fucking character you actually do give a shit about.
Please though, do shovel more themes about Hurt Locker that you picked off Wikipedia. I really do enjoy reading about how deep the theme of "war is a drug" is. You want a movie that explores the concept of institutionalization without wanting the main character to blow up, rent Shawshenk Redemption.
I have several friends in all branches of the military. They unanimously agree that the main character would have been dishonorably discharged for his reckless behavior - if EOD teams even functioned as three man units with no radio communication. The movie is very, very Hollywood version of the war in Iraq.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the car bomb scene, and the sniper scene very much. The tension of what was going to happen next worked really well, but again, I think Jarhead also pulls that off and I actually care about what happens to the characters.
