I know you've all read about this, but now he's starting to release videos from his trip.

Pretty damned cool of him.

The special effects were ok, but the acting, premise, and script writing were pretty bad. Pretty much on par with all of his work, honestly.

It was already done before, but he uses the 3D camera effects so well it is worth seeing it again.

You realize that instead of using his vast wealth to do scientific research he could be using it on hookers and blow, right? I'm not a big fan of his movies but I'm respecting the man.

James Cameron has directed more films that I liked than I disliked.

That said, I think he's a dude I would love to hang out with.

I loved Terminator and Terminator 2. Dude makes blockbuster films some better than others, and loves oceanography. Pretty awesome. He reminds me of John Carmack in a way. Except with movies instead of games, and the ocean instead of space.

Private money allows you to have all kinds of fun. According to an io9 article, Cameron calls the current state of ocean research "piss poor". I wonder how many tour groups will ask us (we maintain an oceanographic time series) about his dive and if we do things like that.

Do you guys realize how deep the Challenger Deep is? This is amazing. The latest xkcd has a nice drawing that puts things in perspective. It's actually exactly the illustration I was looking for when everyone was asking me why we didn't just go down and cap off the Deepwater Horizon rig.
