[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

A movie that we can all agree that is only good in 3-D, Avatar. And not even good, like passible.
Yeah...that's not something we can agree on. I liked Avatar a lot, even without the 3-D. It's a well-paced action movie, regardless of how derivative it is. And I'm not talking about the Dances with Wolves analogy because I hate that argument. I mean the flying ships resembled the ships in the Terminator franchise and the mechs looks straight out of Aliens.

As for Tangled, I liked it a lot. I would put it below a lot of other much better animated movies in terms of story, characters, animation, etc. But it's incredibly solid with no complaints from me about it.

I understand why you like it a lot, but for me I can only enjoy it to the fullest when it's in 3-d. If in 2-d, then I'm just watching for shits and giggles.

There's also the Pocahontas analogy that makes a bit more sense.

Not really. It's just a well-known basic story archetype (stranger who joins the losing side of the war and helps them win). Several Rambo movies follow that same archetype. Star Trek did it several times. You could even say Return of the Jedi was like that. You could say the same about, oh I don't know, any romantic comedy (boy meets girl), revenge action movies, etc. It follows a set story archetype, but that doesn't mean it's exactly like Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves. I don't remember Kevin Costner travelling to another planet and putting his mind inside an alien body to mingle with the natives before big walking mechs came in.

The mech-suits and avatars were really more just foot-notes to the whole thing. Take away those, and it's the same story. Like I said, It's not a bad movie, I understand why people love it, I however think it's just okay.

I can't confirm this, but I believe I am the last person on the continent who hasn't seen Avatar yet.
Make sure you get the glasses first. Also weed. Good weed, this will be a trip.

Hence why I said it's a story archetype. It's not the first by any means and it certainly won't be the last. But that archetype has been around longer than Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves.
Well yeah, but doesn't that prove my point even more? It's kind of recycled story that we've all seen before. They just added flashy colors, mech-suits and Sigourney Weaver to make it stand out.

Right, but my point is: just because it's derivative doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
Hmph...you win. I may watch it again now. FINAL NOTE ON THE MATTER: I wanted to punch Jake Sully in the face every-time I saw his avatar on screen. That ANNOYING smile of his, guh.

Kinda like Despicable Me basic "Bad-guy has a change of heart by the end" movie, but still generally enjoyable. Felt there could have been more jokes though.

Funny enough, I think my opinion of Avatar is similar to Tangled: there's nothing really inherently wrong with the movie. It's solid. It's certainly one of the best looking movies to come out in awhile. But I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a great movie. As I said, it's a well-paced action flick.

And both films have male leads whom I want to see get punched in the face. Though with Tangled, it's mostly do to slap-stick.

Man, I don't know. There's a reason people all simultaneously latched on to the similarity of Avatar to DwW. It kind of goes a little beyond archetype to very similar stories with character for character correspondences. Also, I do believe I read that Cameron said that those were the ships from terminator. It was an easter egg, not a derivation.

Huh...that's kind-of a cool nod to the fans actually. GOOD FOR HIM! He sort-of deserves that money now. Oh who am I kidding, no-one in Holly-wood deserves the money they make. The fact that Lindsey Lohan made a good million for that Herbie movie proves my point.

The funny thing is everyone else was all "Its Pocahontas!" or "Its Dances with Wolves!" My first thought when I heard the premise?

"Huh. That sounds like Fern Gully"

Seriously. And I get that Fern Gully is just another derivitive retelling of that same story, but its just weird that THAT was the first place my mind went.

I weridly don't see it as that much of a rip-off. Probably cos the mysticism was more talked about than actually doing any-thing. Also, Avatar didn't have-

I believe it. The same general premise can be used to create a hundred thousand unique narratives. Hell, you can boil 90% of Hollywood films down to Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey.

Anyway, last film I watched was
Whip It

Damn I love Ellen Page. She's so damned good in everything she does. The whole love story part of the story was both weak and unnecessary, but the rest of it was surprisingly engaging, and, yeah, Ellen Page just really kills it.

What was that horror movie she was in? I wanna see that now.

I rewatched Hard Candy. hadn't seen it since about 4 years ago.
I forgot she doesn't really torture him, physically, anyway. Its all mental torture. It is pretty intense though.

When the worst thing you can about a movie is that it had nothing particularly amazing, defining, or exceptional in it what you have discovered is an extremely well made, good movie with no real flaws. That is Tangled.

Back to the subject at hand:

The Muppets - still awesome. That is all.

DAMN STRAIT! Though I still feel that "Pictures in my head" should have gotten the Oscar instead of "Man or a muppet". Don't get me wrong, Man or muppet was silly an epic at the same time but Pictures in my head was well...THE SAD KERMIT SONG! How does the sad Kermit song NOT win the Oscar?

Dante's Inferno

A puppet based movie from 2007, where the puppets are hand-drawn on paper in style similar to R. Crumb. It recasts Dante as a modern-day loser, and Hell as a slummy modern American city. Very, very, very good. Lots of good comedy moments (e.g. Virgil's packing heat), and voices you'll recognize. May offend you if you're conservative. Keeps fairly close to the source, even including homosexuality in Hell, despite the liberal leanings. Probably to honor the source. Dante does question openly why some of the more controversial groups go to Hell, though. The art and the cleverness are worth it alone.

You know what was a good silly movie? The 1986 Transformers movie. Any movie that has Weird Al Yankovic songs and Eric Idle robots is good in my book.

Daredevil (Director's Cut)

After reading a recent trade (the first volume of Ed Brubaker's run as writer on the title), along with the Favourite Comic Characters discussion, I felt like popping in this bad boy. And yes, I own a copy of it on Blu-Ray. Honestly? Yeah, it's got its flaws. It's much flashier than it should be and feels like a music video at times, but I don't feel it's the terrible movie its reputation gets from others. I don't think Affleck did a bad job as Murdock and Michael Clarke Duncan played a damn good Kingpin. Colin Farell kind of hammed it up, but it suited Bullseye's insanity. Jennifer Garner? Ehhh, 3/4 isn't bad.

Anyway, the director's cut is a more solid movie, I think. There's more of Murdock as a lawyer and a lot scenes make more sense. I actually dug the original version, but I won't defend it, either. There are scores of better superhero movies out there. And some of the CGI action (like the Spidey movies) is really noticeable compared to movies today. But the director's cut turns a mediocre to decent movie into a decent to good movie. My bias for 'ol Hornhead probably gets in the way a little, but I still enjoy this flick.

I don't hate Daredevil with the same furor a lot of people do. It doesn't deserved to be lumped in with Catwoman, Fantastic Four, Elektra, et al.

ALSO last night I missed my last chance most likely ever on earth to see John Carter in IMAX 3D :( damn work
