I have a problem with this. First, Led Zepplin and Nicki Minaj are both pretty popular for their time. Who the fuck is Disco Tex Or Florence and the Unknowns? This is bullshit unless it's pitting a crap lyric from a popular band/artist in the past (which I know exists) and a popular band/artist from the present.

According to Wikipedia, Disco Tex had a hit single. Florence and the Machine is indie, but still pretty popular. Even so, you could find popular bands with good lyrics.

There has always been popular crap. I feel the same way when people talk about the declining quality of cinema. Yeah, sure. There have always been Journey 2s, but no one remembers them.

...you don't know Florence and the Machine?

And looking at their YouTube I see I know a couple of their songs.

Note I said "know" and not "like".

1975: Good and popular vs. crap and popular.
2912: Crap and popular vs. good and popular.

The point is that there is good music around; sometimes you have to do a little searching. Also, those Zeppelin lyrics aren't crap, even though Zeppelin's finer qualities are more in the music than the words.

Florence Welch was the most Googled person in 2011; she's pretty well known.

I know if the graph was comparing Flintstones bands you'd be all over that :awesome:.

Actually, Florence and the Machine is a pretty well-known band if you move your radio dial outside of "Greatest hits of the 80s, 90s and Beyond"

EDIT: Also, as far as those stupid viral memes with the lyrics go, just because Nicki Minaj isn't saying something profound with her lyrics doesn't mean she's not a good pop artist. And just because some band is able to slap together some rhyming poetry--I think each of those examples of "good" lyrics is fucking trite and awful--doesn't make it a good band.

I don't understand why it's so hard for people to understand that you can't judge individual pieces of art against a grand scale; there are more applicable points within the genres or aiming for the same goal which can be used as a better metric of quality.

But no; the internet must forever be polarized as LOLZ AWEZOME or FUCKEN SUX

I've only recently become aware of Florence and the Machine, and only because of their contribution to this Game of Thrones Season 2 trailer:

What's trite or pretentious in writing can work much better in a song--I'd never read Zeppelin, for example. Then again, I listen to Nightwish. Great music, but with lyrics like "Giant spiders learn how to swim with whales", I'd never say the words were well chosen. Florence impressed me with "Rabbit Heart" in how poetic the lyrics were, not because of what they meant, but just because of the word flow. That's really what's important as far as I can tell--making sure the words chosen sound nice. You can't have beautiful music and then have the singer singing the word "Shit" for every beat.

(Now someone's going to post a Youtube of the 1812 overture finale having "Shit" sung over it.)

okay, but good thing we listen to music for more than just beauty.

EDIT: and that's what I'm getting at. There are more than one way to find something entertaining, and there is more than one way for an artist to render that entertainment with quality.
