Exercise, not stimulation, builds brains better

Interesting study that points towards exercise being the leading factor in increasing one's brain power.

Exercise, on the other hand, seems to make neurons nimble. When researchers in a separate study had mice run, the animals’ brains readily wired many new neurons into the neural network. But those neurons didn’t fire later only during running. They also lighted up when the animals practiced cognitive skills, like exploring unfamiliar environments. In the mice, running, unlike learning, had created brain cells that could multitask.

I'm sorry for temporarily hijacking your thread Steinman but... I will always feel that when doomdragon6 posts, I will have this in my head. (ps: he's the wizard)

I could easily see this. If I stop exercising for a bit, it even puts me in a terrible mood.

But there are also plenty of stupid people frequenting the gym too...

It seems like it would be, well, a no-brainer. If nothing else, regular exercise would work to upgrade and/or maintain the infrastructure upon which the brain depends, and the amount of command-and-control necessary to drive that activity would need to increase once the brain "realizes" that it is going to need that additional circuitry to keep up with the increased demand, just like a company would hire more employees if it becomes successful.
