[Movies] Avengers

That's true. But at the very least, some sort of animation studio should tackle Power Pack. Heck, for an older audience (teenagers), you've got Runaways, Gravity, and Cloak & Dagger. So many great properties that teens would love.

Pixar should really stay the fuck away from Marvel stuff. Pixar needs creative freedom to do it's thing, which is would never receive while working with such major properties that they didn't create.
I don't disagree with that. Pixar films are great and you can tell they are passionate about what they do but The Incredibles was such a great movie I would love to see any Marvel property done with that type of solid story and fantastic animation.

And could someone clear this up for me. In all the articles I read regarding The Avengers box office pull it's stated Avatar sits atop of the box office throne with $760 million domestically and $2.8 billion world wide. How the heck did Avatar make this much money? I remember when it came out but it didn't seem like it was a major event. I thought the movie was good but nothing I'd see twice. Did I miss the memo on Avatar?

Runaways is getting a movie already. They were casting at one point at least.

And yeah, Avatar made that much money because it was the first movie that did 3D WELL. It really impressed a lot of people and they went back and saw it more than once. It's the reason everything gets a 3D version now.

Steve, when Avatar first came out, it was flipping huge. Everyone who saw it felt it wasn't just a movie, it was an experience. Their jaws were on the floor. Mine certainly was. I was living in Toronto when it came out and trust me, it was consistently sold out in many places for the first few weeks.

You missed a memo written on a 60 storey high piece of paper folded into an enormous origami swan delivered by a meteor into your back yard, apparently.

Never saw the movie, but it was EVERYWHERE. much like this movie. Haven't seen it, but it's EVERYWHERE.

Damn, I didn't catch it in 3D. That might explain my lack of enthusiasm. Wish I would have now. I remember the media campaign but don't recall people around me talking about it. With The Avengers and The Dark Knight I couldn't escape people going on and on about them. Don't remember much talk about it on TV either although I probably didn't watch as much TV as I do now. They are making a sequel to Avatar, right? If so I'll definitely catch that in 3D.

Back to The Avengers talk, though. Saw it three times and loved it more each time. Went back and watched The Hulk and was amazed at how much better he looked in The Avengers. Didn't realize how bright green he was in the original.

I thought Avatar was pretty good and enjoyable, not the best movie ever but a solid one--but yeah, it was all over the place. I don't believe it broke any records for opening weekend, but boy did it have legs. News was all over the place about when it beat out Titanic. Then there was post-Pandora depression...

But yeah, though 3D was back before Avatar, it didn't boom until after. It's also why we're getting so many retro-conversions. Garbage.

No one liked all the post-production 3D, and then Avatar came out filmed in 3D and everyone loved it. So the studios decide on MORE POST-PRODUCTION 3D! Brilliant!

That's the difference with Avatar, though: it's one of the few movies that was made with the 3-D in mind from the very beginning. Its 3-D wasn't done sloppily in rushed post-production like most (apparently, Clash of the Titans' 3-D is atrocious; it was done in post within a span of less than two weeks).

I've said before that Avatar's one of the few movies I've seen in 3-D and still the only one I've seen that I've felt was even worth it.

Underworld Awakening is not a good movie by any stretch, but you can reallly tell that the 3D wasn't just shoehorned in. There are some scenes that look phenominal in 3D.
One is where they pump silver dust through the vents of a werewolf hideout and there are flecks of silver all over the place and it just looks damn impressive.

A character in love with death... finally, someone in the movies you can identify with ;)

Let's just say I own alot of back issue stuff with a certain lover of Death and pretty Gems.

Been a loooong time fan. When I initially heard the rumors I was like "Yeah, uh huh. Right. Noone remembers him. He's too awesome to ever hit film" then when they were confirmed I actually got worried "How do you do something epic enough to do him proper justice? This is Hollywood we're talking about". Then I saw Avengers and said "Yes... it can be done... and it'll be amazing".

I have the figures, I have the comics, I've loved his character above anything else Marvel. I am beyond words with anticipation for this sequel.

I know plenty of the Avengers from their singular comic, but never read anything involving Thanos. Where should I start?

Also, in love with Death? How can someone...

Oh..

(Yeah, I know, wrong comicverse)

I honestly first found out about him in the first run of Infinity Gauntlet. It sparked my interest so I looked at the series leading up to his appearance there which was Silver Surfer: The Rebirth of Thanos. Another personal favorite is "Thanos: The End" which is part of the comic series "The End" that shows the final stories of each character if the comics were ever to end. Give me a sec to look in my boxes and see what other good reads I have on him.

Ok:

Thanos "Epihany" and "Samaritan" are the collected issues of his stand-alone series from back in early 2000s.

Also the "Annihilation" series had some fantastic Thanos in it. Vol 1-2-3 the Thanos Imperitive.

Infinity War, Crusade and Abyss are also sequels to Gauntlet if you enjoyed that series.

All collected trades btw.

Sorry for bouncing all over the place with that.

You can start with:

Infinity Gauntlet (Just to see how amazing he can be)
Silver Surfer: The Rebirth of Thanos (As a post Gauntlet Prequel)
Infinity War, Crusade and Abyss (To see what came after Gauntlet)

Thanos Epiphany and Samaritan (For some side stories as to what happens to him after he gains and loses all the power of the cosmos)
Annihilation (To get some more)

Thanos Imperitive (To show where he pretty much ended up until recently in the canon)
Marvel:The End (To see what "could" be the way the Marvel Universe wraps up)

****Just some fun info, he also at one point (not sure if it's still canon or not) gave Deadpool his immortality. Aka not just an amazing healing factor but never able to "true death".

Actually it never was canon, because that's not what happened... some people just interpreted the relevant scene wrong.

What actually happens is that Deadpool is dead and there's nothing left of him but a hand... and T-Ray uses an orb to resurrect him right before he and Death get frisky in the afterlife... and then says that Thanos gave him the orb and that he'll always resurrect Deadpool so he can't be with Death...

Why do people keep saying that... none of the 3D was all that 3D-ish... and i watched it in an IMAX theatre.

Teh CGI was very high rez and all (although i found the movement the most impressive part, being spoiled by Blizz and Square cinematics), but i never saw any scenes where it popped out of the screen enough to consider the 3D impressive.

I think that's where people keep misunderstanding the point of 3D.

It's not about "stuff flying at the screen" or "popping out", it's to give "depth of field" to a film. UP did it, Avatar did it and when someone says "the 3D was terrible" it's because it looks like a cheap effect instead of real actual depth.

Partially correct, but still mostly wrong.

He is infinitely cursed, by Thanos, to be incapable of "Truth Death".

Somehow I keep coming to this thread, but haven't yet had the movie spoiled for me. I'm tempting fate.

UNMARKED SPOILERS TO RUIN THINGS FOR CHECKEREDHAT:

The movie is about Avengers. MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Also, I saw Thor and Up in 3D, was not impressed with either. Ironically, I never saw Avatar in 3D.

I think you might be confused by this word: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/consider :p

If he was actually cursed there'd be no point in Thanos saying he should consider himself cursed... i mean you don't say "consider yourself dead" to a corpse.

But of course as long as Thanos exists in any form that can still desire Death, Wade will not be able to stay dead for long... so it's basically the same thing...

Thanos is Marvel's ultimate villain and since Marvel Productions has only focused on Avengers, I think it's "epic". However, I partially agree. Ultron should have been Villain #2 and the big throwdown for a "trilogy end" should have been my boy in Purple.

He really doesn't. They could come up with a number of reasons for it's existence.
All of which would lack the core concept of him as an evil robot Pym...

What next, a Wanda / Vision / Wonder Man love triangle where Visio's brain isn't based on Wonder Man... what's the point?

What can you say about a villain who kills half the universe just to say
"Hey death...
, you're hot, baby."?

Avatar was like 5 $50m+ weekends in a row, and absolute monster weeks over Christmas and New Year's. It blazed through the weak Jan-March period.

Avengers is going to bump against every summer blockbuster in a row.

I would not be surprised (or disappointed) if, should they make this a trilogy, Thanos was was the main villain in a two-parter.
