Apparently "Screwed Big Time" on Steam

Sometime last week or the week before, someone messaged me on Steam while playing with me on TF2. He asked if I wanted to trade a bunch of my stuff for a some kind of rare hat that isn't available anymore or something. I can't honestly remember the details of it because 1) I didn't really give a shit, 2) I've never traded before and don't know the value of any of the crap I wasn't using.

Anyway, he said it was a good deal, coming up with some B.S. about this item worth this much scrap, this item worth this much scrap, etc. Whatever, I traded. And I rather liked the hat. It was some kind of a bowler or something. Looked great on my Spy.

So he messages me tonight, asking if he can trade it back for a Strange Lolichop. I tell him no at first because I rather liked the hat and didn't see the use in the other item. Then he started begging and begging and begging. He said he traded some of the items he got for "some gay hats" or something, which didn't win any favours on my part. So, finally, just to get him off my back so I could go back to playing Civ IV, I traded. Whatever.

Then he goes something like, "LMAOOOOO! You just got screwed hardcore! The Lolichop is only worth 1 instead of 1.22." I didn't give a shit, but I told him never to trade with me again if he was going to laugh in my face and tell me I got screwed. He unfriended me after this.

So, I don't even know if I got screwed or not. I honestly don't care. I'm out a good hat for my spy, which is a shame. But I'll certainly not bother with trading every again if that's the kind of bullshit I have to put up with.

Oh, and his Steam name is Gunnerbeau, if anyone's interested.

Yeah, I would've just blocked him. I can understand the not caring part though, as I really don't care about trading either. When I get home on Monday, I'm pretty sure I have a spy hat you can have to replace your loss. I never play spy, nor do I care about trading anymore. I pretty much have everything I want.

But yeah, in the grand scheme of things, you did get "screwed" in the sense that you gave him a bunch of stuff for essentially nothing.

In conclusion,

I never trade without consulting the TF2 Fair Trade community site. They have nice spreadsheets that give you all the info you need on the current rate of items. It's a great way to prevent getting scammed.

And yeah, you should have ignored him.

No, he gave him items that were worth nothing for something that was worth nothing. Nothing of value was gained or lost.

And that's really the thing. I'm more apathetic towards the whole thing in general. They're really worth nothing, since they're all earned in-game, anyway. It was just the whole situation and how the guy "screwed me over" that ground my gears. It was the attitude, not the transaction.

And that I'm out a hat for my spy, but will soon be fixed thanks to the awesomeness of Bumble.

Nick, you got screwed. Not just screwed, but screwed big time. Face it. Deal with it. Stop pretending you don't care, stop pretending you're not a shattered shell of a man now. The only way you're going to move past it is to admit how violated you feel, how you'll never get that hat back, and how you can never be your old self again. Only then can you become your new self, post-screwed, post-hat. Then the not caring can truly begin.

If you need support, we got your back.

y-you have spy hats? And you never told me?

In conclusion,

I really can't understand how ANY of that stuff has any worth and therefore how it's possible to get screwed. These people understand it's all make- believe right? That just because it's rare doesn't mean it has to have value to you? If you don't see a use for it, it's worthless, no matter how rare it is.

Hello shiny rocks...
Well, I mean those don't actually have a use other than to look nice. But even that, is something. Same with these dumb hats. If TNG likes hat A more than hat B, even though neither of them serve a practical use, hat A is more valuable to him, even if hat B is more rare.

My little cousins gave me lucky rocks when they were 5.

Those were free. I still have them and wouldn't trade them for your shiny rocks.

Are they the lucky rocks that were only available when you preordered The Lucky Rock Adventure 2: No More Mister Gneiss Guy? If so, they're actually quite valuable, worth at least 12 pebbles. More if you've painted them.

Basically, if you're happy with the results, you weren't screwed. Maybe with a caveat when the trade involves things of real world monetary value. I mean, I really like this coffee mug on my desk, but if someone offered to trade me an original film print of Gone with the Wind for it, even though I have no way to watch that print, I'd make the trade.

Then I'd sell the film print, buy a new coffee mug, and an autographed photo of Bobby Orr to hang on my wall.
