I would love to get into the Dresden series - my wife loves it. Unfortunately, I just can't justify buying two copies of an entire series of books, and she's bought every single one in audiobook format, something that I hate.

It's called Cold Days. I fricking can't wait!
You and me both Dave. The preview of chapter one promises many wonders. It'll be good to see some proper action again after Ghost Story, which wasn't bad but definitely not the best Dresden book either. Plus, it's got Mab. Can't go wrong with Mab.

Yay, more books for my best friend to spoil for me before I get a chance to read them.

*grumble, grumble, grumble*

Is it really 2 copies when one of those sets is an audiobook? I own most books that I like in both formats >.> (Thank you Audible for being cheap as hell).

ALSO PREVIEW OF CHAPTER ONE?! *zooms off to find it*

Ooh, in my search I discovered wonderful things.

Chapter 1:October 31, Halloween
Chapter 2: November 6th
Chapter 3: November 13th
Chapter 4: November 20th

I'll go out on a limb and say that you will love them. I was hooked after Storm Front, but after the third book, I was perma-sold.

The writing gets better and the books get darker as you go along. The next to the last one - Changes - was downright gut-wrenching.

I thought I figured out how the story was going to end, then Butcher threw a curveball in. Then I went "Nooooo why does that part have to wait for the next book *cry*.

I thought the finale went against the laws set down in previous books so I was a bit annoyed at that.

Over all a strong book and I really liked it just the finale was a bit of a mess.

See you all in a couple days, if that.

Which ones exactly?

Okay the way I thought it worked was that there were 4 members of the fairy queen court. The mother, the queen, the lady and the knight. When one of them dies the power flows to the nearest member of the court and then they select who will recieve the power of the dead member of the court.

For example when the old summer knight died the power flowed into Aurora and she then gave the power to Lily making her the summer knight. Then when Aurora died the power flowed into the nearest member of the court the summer knight Lily. Who was then able to give Fix the power of the summer knight.

At no point did it seem that the power just flowed all whilly nilly into whatever rando person happened to be wandering by that met the bizarre set of rules. I'm sure that this is the way the power was transfered in Summer Knight and was how Lily ended up as the Summer Lady.

In Summer Knight, Lily was essentially "promoted" to Summer Lady I think. I don't think Titania would have given it to her by any stretch of the imagination. However the queens of the Sidhe have to be female, so it couldn't work that way for Fix and Harry, so the power went to whoever could take it (and was female). The only power that returns to the queens is that of the Knight because they get to choose who gets the power, and there is no one under the Knights who could be promoted. Remember, there was a lot of talk about how the Ladies would automatically inherit the Queen's mantle should the Queen die as well.

I was just positive that the way that it was described in Summer Knight was that the powers of the Lady went into Lily because she was the summer knight and thus part of the court not because she was the closest possible host for the powers of the Lady. And that as such she wasn't the lady that Titania would have wanted and Fix her choice for Summer knight wasn't who Titania would have wanted either but since the power was Lily's she would have to deal. I mean look we have one case of the Lady dying in Summer Knight. When that happened the power flowed into the Knight with the implication that the way the knight's power flows into the nearest member of the court when the Knight dies same deal with the powers of all the queens. I'm willing to accept that he changed the rules or even that I was completely wrong about it if somebody can actually say "No Dubyamn you're an idiot because in Changes XYZ happened" but reading over the synopsis of Summer Knight I don't think I am wrong about the way he has presented it in the past.

Keep in mind that we have no idea what happened at the end of Summer Knight because Harry didn't really know either. You're inferring. I was thinking the same, but I basically listen to the audiobooks often enough to realize that nothing was really clearly defined rules wise there.

Also...
I assume that the power of the Summer Lady had no where to go because of the circle, and Mab could very well have consented to give the power to Molly, if you really think about it. Also it makes sense for the mantles of the Queens to pass automatically, because there can't be a gap in their power or else lots of things are fucked. The Knights are just mortals with extra power and not nearly as vital.

Holy crap I didn't know there was Dresden talk here!

I loved the book to pieces, but I'm also kind of sad at noticing we'll never get back to the way things were before. No more fun cases where what's at stake is just Harry's skin and maybe a few innocents but not, y'know, existence itself or something.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure Mab had planned for Molly to be the "back up" Lady. She was Plan B, or maybe C, but definitely in Mab's mind anyway as a possibility. I think the book itself mentions Harry thinking something of the sort. Mab definitely knew before Harry where the power would go.

Now that Nemesis has been named and the plot has picked up a lot, does anyone besides me think that there are only a few books left? I mean, they used to be fun, lighthearted (well, as lighthearted as these things go) books, but they started getting darker and darker and now we're at holy crap levels of darkness.

And I really hope Fix doesn't blame Harry for Lily. That was just...ugh.

There are still a few books left, we actually know a bit about Butcher's plans for the series.

It's 20+ Dresden Files books (originally exactly 20, but Butcher said that he's not as far along as he thought he'd be so it'll probably be closer to 23) and then 3 big "apocalyptic trilogy" books, which I assume will be even longer than the average Dresden File. We know the names for those. "Hell's Bells", "Stars and Stones", "Empty Night".
