[TV] The Walking Dead

Aide from that one moment where I thought for sure she was dead, I actually thought Lori wasn't that bad this week.

Also, holy shit, Carl has become badass and useful. In two episodes, he's already made up for the last two seasons in my eyes.

GET OFF MY BACK!

Carl is a little man. Not just getting the med supplies, which was great, but notice the moment when Rick took Daryl and T with the prisoners. He left Glen at the door, but Carl was the one who reached out, closed the door, and locked it. Didn't need a word said to him, didn't say anything--just did as needed for the group.

Then he follows it up by saving the day.

Lori did a good thing, but I thought she was being stupid as hell even trying that considering the situation. She could've lost both herself AND the baby.

Lovin this season so far! I like that it's reminiscent of the comic but at this point is entirely it's own story. So excited for next week.

The slowness of this week's episode was kinda necessary, as it's an exposition heavy one.

If they had made The Governor's lurking mental illness and questionable tactics more overt, he wouldn't have been nearly as threatening. They also had to build up Woodbury as a place that Andrea might actually want to stay at, even if Michonne is so jaded that she instantly picked up on the wrongness of it all. This is because TV Andrea is a butt monkey and must always, always suffer for being a dipshit.

I assure you, things are going to get CRAZY soon.

I enjoyed this episode. I feel like it was a good introduction to an important character. I've got high hopes for this season and it seems to be delivering so far.

I'm worried because this kind of character is hard to do right. If you mess it up you end up with some cartoony guy who is evil for the sake of being evil. There's no motivation, and it becomes unbelievable because there's no real reason to do any of that. If you do it right it can be something that will stick with you

I'm a week behind you guys - which is phenomenal considering that most TV shows land here about a year later, if you're lucky. Goddammit, there better be some Game of Thrones coming after Boardwalk Empire Season 2, or I'm gonna fuckin' kill somebody. But I digress...

Just watched episode 2

...and I'm a little disappointed they just handwaved Carl's trip to the clinic. In the comic one of the most intense moments was Carl having to fight off two zombies on his own at one point, and this would have been a nice chance to show that.

Also, no Axel among the prisoners :( I'm hoping that the guy with the Colonel Sanders beard will step up to the plate, though. And poor, poor Tiny :( :( :(

Other than that, loving what's going on so far. It seems like the savagery of this not-so-brave new world is finally starting to show in the characters.

Season 3, episode 3:

I like the Governor's POV, the way he stared weirdly at Andrea when she said it was the end of the world. Michonne was interesting too, in that you can tell she's been surviving out there so long that she can't just get out of fight-or-flight mode at an instant like Andrea. Without her weapon out there, she's vulnerable, and it feels the same in Woodbury even if she's relatively safe.

While I would rather be watching Rick's group, it was a good episode.

I'm predicting we'll see that in a teaser for another episode.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT T-DAWG!

Oh, and I guess Carol... that's kinda sad, maybe.

.....

At least Lori's gone.

Walking Dead what. WHAT. WHAT? what. WHAT?? ...what...

That was harsh. Also kudos Andrew Lincoln for making my skin crawl, kudos.

During most of that scene, all I was thinking was what will Jay post.

Damn Carl's turned into one cold stoned do whatever it takes guy. Rick blubbered more than Carl did throughout the whole ordeal.

Also pour one out for T-Dawg. I knew with the lack of story they were giving him he was going to go but I was hoping a few more weeks.

I was really wishing that it would have happened like it did in the comics. Then I could go "Well assholes... here's what you wanted. And here's a little more on top. Enjoy it, douchebags." But of course that would have never flown on TV.

And yeah... Carl is becoming the hardest motherfucker on the planet much faster than he did in the comics.

When did Carol lose her headscarf? When she ran out, she very clearly had it on still. And I hated how Glenn and Beardy just kinda vanished for awhile.

Also, WTF was up with this line delivery?

I thought that line delivery was excellent. You can see in a matter of seconds... disbelief, grief, blaming of another, regret than blaming of oneself.

I thought the delivery of that was just great. Here's my take on it.

He's coming to a dozen conclusions all at once, essentially.
1) his wife is dead. Even though they weren't on great terms Rick had never expected her to actually die. He never wanted that at all. Now the weight of raising two kids in zombie world is fully on him.
2) His 10 year old son shot his own mother in the head. It had to be done, but that's still not something a 10 year old should ever have to do.
3) Based on the revelation that it was Andrew that did this, someone Rick should have either killed outright or let join the inmates, a portion of all this was on him. He knows this.

So combining all those together and I feel like his reaction was moving.

This really was Andrew's revenge. In the comics he dies off panel, unsung, and we only found out about it from Kirkman years after the fact. In the show, they made it seem like "Yes, he's REALLY dead," then fucking made him kill half the survivors.

phil and Jay hit it on the head. The reaction was dead on and powerful. If you laughed, you just didn't see it the way it was meant to be portrayed. Not saying you're wrong, just saying you didn't get it the way others did.

As for the episode, wow. My wife and I were sitting there in disbelief. She's read the entire comic series (I haven't because I want 100% of the show to be surprising, even though she does tell me after someone dies, how they instead died in the comic which is cool). It was a powerful powerful episode and I can only echo what's been said already:

Carl is amazing. Sometimes a little TOO amazing, he's in danger of being a Mary Sue but I won't write him off as one yet, I do enjoy his performances, which DAMN for a kid his age he's knocking out of the park.
Rick.... what can I say? Regardless of how he felt about Lori's infidelity, he loved her to the core. It was his wife, mother of his son, and the reason he fought so hard to get where he was. I knew what the reaction was going to be before it happened and it still struck a cord with me when it did anyway.
T-Dog. I wasn't as struck by what happened to him until I watched his actor talk about the character on Talking Dead afterward. How emotional and strong he felt about his character really made me retrospect Tdog alot more and I have to admit, looking back on the character he had alot of awesome defining moments despite lack of script or backround.
Andrew. Rick is going to torture himself over this. It's, in a way, his fault this all happened by not 100% making sure Andrew was gone with a bullet to the brain. Andrew is going to have a lasting impact beyond what his screen time showed for sure.
Carol. She's alive, it's just too obvious. The problem becomes, what happens over the next few episodes to her. Does she find them again? My gut says within the next episode.
The inmates. I really hope that Rick feels they proved themselves enough, Rick's group is shrinking drastically and they need the manpower.
Merle. I loved the back and forth between him and the Governor . His love for his brother vs his loyalty to the man who saved his life. Strong stuff.
Andrea and Michonne. Andrea, get your mouth off Governor's dick and listen to your girl. She's a badass and I can't wait to see what happens over the next few episodes with them in the town.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head but damn, seriously good stuff.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Carl isn't' supposed to be admired at this point, despite how competent he's become. Your really just supposed to feel sorry for him, as his entire childhood has been destroyed and he's never going to be well-adjusted as an adult. His entire future is going to be one of loneliness and unhappiness, and that's assuming he doesn't snap and just start killing people before they become a problem.
