The worst of the storm has passed and so far I haven't had any major issues. The power flickered but didn't go out. The wind was pretty crazy most of the night. The eye passed about 20 miles north of here.
Speaking of weird weather, I currently have rain approaching form two directions -- from Milton on the West and from the tropical depression that is trying to form off of Florida on the East.
I did some more research, and, you're right, the thing that makes this storm unique is that storms that form in the Gulf almost never make landfall in the peninsula.
It happens occasionally.
The ones that come to mind are Charley in 2004 and Wilma in 2005:
