*shrug* What is the age of majority in the United States, when individuals gain the status of legal adults? I think in most states it seems to be 18 years of age.

Could very well be, I'm not very familiar with how these things are in Finland at the moment. Incidentally, I could mention that the returns you can usually get from the stock market far outweigh the interest on any student loan you can get in Finland. I'm sort of kicking myself in the head why...

I'm not so sure they were tricked into signing the loan contract, nor that they had a gun to their head. Rather, I believe they wanted their particular degree, and knew, or should have known, what it would cost them. And they chose to sign the contract out of their own free will.

I'm sorry, but I believe if you take out a loan, you should pay back that loan. Being responsible for your own finances is a part of being an adult.

    Coronavirus Thread

So, I recently returned from my Christmas holiday in Finland to mandatory 7-day entry quarantine, stuck in a hotel room. I was supposed to get out tomorrow morning. Guess whose final PCR test came back positive this morning (no symptoms whatsoever), and so gets to spend a minimum of 10 more...

Is income inequality unjust, and if so, where is the injustice?

The scripture does make references to helping the poor and needy. Leaving aside religious considerations, however, what exactly is wrong or morally objectionable in wanting to get market value for you property?

Not sure I can read that, as the notification says it has been removed. However, the Salvation Army is a socially acceptable charity to donate to, at least on this side of the puddle. Well, while I sympathise with their situation, it seems to me that we have had systems in place to deal with...

The Random Crap Thread 2: It Hits the Fan.

So, I'm on my Christmas holiday now, in my own country. Having been away for about two years, I had a number of errands to run about town. In the process, I noticed quite a few long queues in various places, people seeming to queue to places unknown to me. After finishing my to-do list for the...

    Minor victory thread

Just bought plane tickets today, I'm heading back home for four full weeks of holidays during Christmas & New Year period. My first real holiday for almost two years, ever since covid made travel impractical. Man, I have SO been looking forward to this.

[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

It would seem to me that your best friend (friend 'A'), being inseparable from you other friend (friend 'B'), might know B's circumstances best. And, being your best friend, may know something about your situation. Have you considered tactfully voicing your concerns to A, and hearing how A sees...

If you raise their wage to the proposed new minimum standard of 15 $ per hour, the workers will be more inclined to stay and work for you. Right?

Finally got my 2nd dose today (AstraZeneca). Based on my experiences of the side effects from the 1st dose, I'll mostly be bedridden tomorrow. Thankfully it is Work From Home day for us. So it is time to hit the bars this evening I think. If I feel like dying tomorrow, AstraZeneca has me...

Assuming I understood your position correctly (and please feel free to correct me if I didn't), I agree. The challenges were known from the beginning, as was known by all that the allies won't be in Afghanistan forever, 20 years and one trillion dollars weren't enough to find a solution that...

Many of the fears expressed when the US announced the withdrawal earlier this year do seem to have come to pass, with the Taliban winning at this point. And major powers with world-spanning interests should be careful about making drastic policy changes, since the furtherance of those interests...

For anyone interested, here is a 2019 research report of a survey with various stakeholder groups regarding the situation of low-wage migrant workers in UAE.

Many of the Gulf countries do have a less than stellar reputation concerning their treatment of migrant workers. It seems that UAE has half-way decent labor protections for migrant workers and are making moves in the right direction, though it seems that the problem of lackadaisical enforcement...

Oh no, not at all. I've been doing some reading on the thai berry pickers in Finland. They come from some of the poorest rural areas of Thailand, and many have gone deeply into debt to afford the plane ticket, visa fees, and recruiter's fee, plus they need to pay for their accommodation and...

The Finnish berry industry is reliant on foreign workers who come to pick wild berries from the Finnish forests for the 2-3 month season every year. For the past decade most of those berry pickers have come from Thailand, with around 3000 thais picking berries in the forests this year. Thailand...

I think this is quite preposterous. I mean, I guess it depends on what you're trying to get through and where, but ten million for a simple absentee vote? Most politicians are not so greedy, I'm sure they can be made to see the merits of your point of view for a lot less.
