I've put up a (nigh-)empty list here, divided by genre. Let's hear some discussion, and see if we can't fill it, shall we?

A few notes:
1. The lists don't go from best to worse or vice versa, but in order of posting.
2. Genres have been taken from imdb.com.
3. If you see a movie in the list that you don't think it belongs there, let us know why and it may drop.
4. When posting a suggestion, name the movie's genre.
5. If you know the movie is a remake or has been remade, include the year of the version.
6. Be polite.
7. Have fun ;)

Animation is a medium, not a genre, and that many animated films have been solid contributions to other genres such as action, comedy, and fantasy. If I suggest Spirited Away for the fantasy genre, does it just get stowed with Animation? (Or hell, Musical.) And then you've got Who Framed Roger Rabbit in there, but my guess is that it has less animation in it than Avatar or Transformers 3.

I know there will be other genre fights too, but that's mine.

Also, you forgot to bold and underline Western.

I would argue that The Expendables doesn't belong because it's not that great a movie, BUT it has so many action movie icons in it that it is pretty necessary, if only as a time capsule.

Onto less controversial stuff though...

Western: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is necessary viewing, being one of the most referenced, but also being a great movie and probably my favorite movie of all.

Musical: The Nightmare Before Christmas (or animation, whatever...)

Fantasy: The Dark Crystal

What genre is Casablanca? War? Thriller? Romance? Comedy? It feels like one of those films that has it all, but whatever it is, it's necessary viewing just for being so damn enjoyable, quotable, and timeless.

I am not entirely sure if this is what you're looking for, but I'd suggest:

Documentary: The World at War (1973-74)

It is a british documentary series of 26 episodes concerning the events of WWII, so it's not exactly a movie. Still, I found it to be very good, and useful in giving people a basic understanding of the war. I can recommend, though old hands probably already know most of the stuff.

If the suggestion is appropriate, then let me offer another one in the same vein:

Documentary: World War One (1964-1965)

Quite much the same as the previous, an american-produced tv-series of events in WWI. I personally liked the previous one better as a documentary, but this one is good too, and serves much the same informational purpose for the war before.

In my opinion, watching these two documentary series will give a person a solid everyman's understanding of the two world wars.

I don't see the point in having a History and a War genre if the History one is packed with war movies. And as much as I love Braveheart, its so woefully historically inaccurate that I would seriously hesitate to put it in the History section.
Action- Die Hard, Terminator 2, Jaws (?)
Adventure- Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (imo, you can skip Temple of Doom. Maybe one day they'll make a 4th one, that would be awesome so long as they didn't put in random cgi gophers and monkeys and make the story all about that guy from the Transformers movies or something.) Jurassic Park
Fantasy- Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Clash of the Titans (1981),
Western- Once Upon a Time in the West (This has become one of my favourite movies. Period.)
Comedy- Ghostbusters, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Clerks.
Horror- Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Alien, Jaws (?)
Thriller- Silence of the Lambs. (Duh.), Jaws (?)
Added at: 17:17
Fine, I'll add to the Animation "genre". I seriously really hate that.
Fantasia, Fantasia 2000, The Thief and the Cobbler, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Just for the historical purpose. I don't really like it but it is a must-see), Wall*E

#10

North_Ranger

North_Ranger

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you add Temple of Doom? Granted, it's not as epic as Raiders or funny as Crusade, but personally I think it's still head and shoulders (and torso and navel and...) above the 4th Indiana Jones film which simply cannot exist.

Also, your mention of Monty Python made me add some of their other films, too.

I guess objectively its a solid adventure flick, but I really just can't stand Spielberg's wife's wailings all throughout. Points for Shortround though.
And if you're going for the most important, most influential, etc, I don't think its really necessary to include every entry in a series, if one or two of them are so much better than the other and exemplify the genre better and dfine the characters on their own, unless the series tells an ongoing story in several parts a la Lord of the Rings. Each Indy movie is its own story, and the first and third are simply the best entries.

Which reminds me: Adventure: The Goonies, and Back to the Future
Also
Comedy- Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
And the Producers, if you like.

Hey, why no Once Upon a Time in the West? Its incredible.

War/History- The Devil's Brigade (Its one of few war movies I can think of that actually acknowledges that countries other than the States and England fought against Nazi Germany during World War 2. It's based on the true story of the Black Devils; the Canadian-US coalition force that is now remembered as the US's first Special Forces unit.)
I'd add The Arrow to the History section because the Avro Arrow is super interesting, but I don't think thats REALLY required viewing unless you're a Canadian.

Nice list, Sara. Consider them added. The only one I'd personally argue against is the Star Trek remake. Personally I disliked it heavily; partly because of the lense flare, partly because I thought they were playing hell with the universe; and partly because I constantly expected Spock to try and open Kirk's skull :p But that's just my €0.02.

This is me "subscribing" to this thread so I notice it later and maybe add to your list.

I like the idea of a list of movies that isn't "the top 100, 10, 1,000, etc" - but merely a list of movies that, while perhaps some aren't critically acclaimed, have enough merit that one should see them at least once.

I have to admit, though, 1,000 movies is a lot of movies.

And to those who hated star trek reboot, tell me again where the bad man touched you? I love both the original series and the reboot, and I thought the way they handled the reboot was utterly fantastic.

Besides, anyone who throws R2D2 out into space just for kicks is a friend of mine. That little droid really knows how to push one's buttons.

Fantasy: Spirited Away
Action: Princess Mononoke, The Incredibles
Family: Toy Story
There's a part of me that really wants Ratatouille on there, but then another part questions if it's really essential. 1001 movies sounds like a lot, but really, there are so many good ones that so few people see.
Also, I'd suggest people abstain from including every entry in a series or every entry from a particular director. Even if each film is a gem, they can't all be essential. And so I support the excepting of the 2nd and 4th Indy movies. They're just not individually relevant.
I hate to do this, but why is Clash of the Titans up there? It's a terribly paced movie, although the stop-motion is amazing and I believe it was one of Lawrence Olivier's later films.
In which case, Adventure: King Kong (1933). So ground-breaking in special effects that people still don't know how they did some things, if the documentary on the DVD is to be believed, and it's a good story too. Much as I love the Peter Jackson version, it fails to be as iconic or essential as the nearly 80-year-old original.
Added at: 18:23
I'm gonna also say Day of the Dead isn't as important a horror film as its predecessors, Night and Dawn. I wouldn't, but the horror genre is filling up awful fast and I worry we're going to miss something much more crucial.

And I'm gonna throw on

Horror: Gojira
Not the Americanized version with Raymond Burr--the original film in Japanese. It is an honestly good movie and much better expresses the Japanese sentiment and horror over the nuclear weapons than the version that was chopped to bits by American studios. I think we've grown enough as a culture at this point that we view it from Japan directly rather than needing an American observer as our eyes--we're already the outsiders.

Looks like comedy might need some paring down (I was joking with Bloodsport as a comedy, although it is hilarious. Really it belongs in action, if at all). Romancing the Stone seems better suited in Adventure, and Gremlins 2 probably doesn't need to be there at all. Also, Dick? A must see? (genuinely curious here; never saw it, seems like a trifle)

If I may make a suggestion/question first: Can you alphabetize the list in each category? It makes it a lot easier to see whether a movie has been listed already or not.

Next to that, I feel that some sequels/trilogy's should be up there too (like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Back to the Future), they sort of come in a package deal. So I listed them below as well.

[ACTION]
Air Force One
Batman Begins (i feel it's more action than adventure, but then I saw other comic hero movies in adventure as well, so use your own discretion)
Die Hard 2 - Die Harder
Die Hard 3 - Die Hard With a Vengeance
Face/Off
Independence Day
Lethal Weapon 2
Lethal Weapon 3
Rambo II - First Blood Part II (This one is a must I think: a classic action movie where a buff guy runs around, killing lots and lots of bad guys with over the top weapons)
Rumble in the Bronx
The Dark Knight (same as Batman Begins)
The Hunt for Red October
The Rock (one of my favorites, great action, great cast)
V for Vendetta (Really gripping, great story and inspired a real life movement)

[ADVENTURE]
Back to the Future II
Back to the Future III
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (not sure if this is the same one as the one mentioned, but I think this one is known as THE Robin Hood movie in most peoples mind)
Water World (notorious for having flopped due to bad critic reviews, but an adventure of epic proportions back in its day)

[ANIMATION]
Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children (story wise it doesn't make much sense, but it stems from a game so popular they have tons of spin-offs, including this movie (with the awesome graphics), decades later)
Finding Nemo
Kung Fu Panda

[BIOGRAPHY]
The Aviator
The Pursuit of Happiness

[COMEDY]
wow this one's so full already.. :) I'll just add a few
Groundhog Day
Kick-Ass
Out of Sight (Not really sure on the Comedy tag, but it beats Action and Crime)

[CRIME]
Scarface (Say hello to my little friend! Come to think of it, I think all movies with famous quotes should be in here)

I'm gonna stop before I go on all night with this... just one more that really should be here: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain [I dunno, Romance? Fantasy? would be easier if there were a Foreign category :p]

Covar

Covar

Crime: Goodfellas, Godfather Part II (Normally I would shy away from Sequels, but this movie is as good if not better than the original).
Beauty and the Beast should go in either Animation or Musical, but it deserves a spot on there.
If you're putting Band's music video movies on there you should include Tommy
The Longest Day, is a must have War movie.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance for Western. Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, the stars don't get much bigger.
Added at: 08:53
Ok the Comedy list is nearly full and there's not a single Marx Brothers film on there?
A Night at the Opera. (or Duck Soup, or any of their other films, this one's just preference as it was the first I saw all the way through).

Vertigo should be added to Mystery, I think. That's a fantastic movie.

Just Me

Just Me

Animation:
Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame

Especially because of the dark beginning sequence; steaming horse, chased gipsy girl, death and one evil villain. Also for the Hellfire sequence, and just all the other scenes with nasty Frollo. And I absolutely like like the scene and song God help the outcasts.

Just spare me the gargoyles and the unfitting comedy elements.

Soliloquy

"Film Noir" is going to be difficult to fill up, I think, since almost all of the most notable recent Noir movies fit snugly into other categories.

For instance, Blade Runner and Dark City are both very, very noir, but are also Sci-Fi (though I see you've got Dark City listed under mystery -- which is also a good fit for it.) All the good Batman films are heavily noir-influenced, but they're also action films. Se7en is about as noir as it gets these days, but it also fits snugly into the thriller category.

It's pretty much the inverse of the issue Quotemander had with the animation category -- I love the style, but its style is so often mixed with so many other genres that no one will think to categorize noir films as noir.

That said, I think Sin City deserves to be put under Noir, if only because its heavily-stylized aesthetic influenced the way later comic book movies were filmed, such as Watchmen and 300.

I've heard L.A. Confidential and Basic Instinct were good, but alas, I haven't gotten around to seeing either :(.

(ALSO: Hi guys!)

EDIT: Also, put in Children of Men in there. I guess it'd be considered a thriller? Maybe Sci-Fi?

Driving Miss Daisy (Drama)
Forbidden Planet (sci-fi)
Event Horizon (horror... it always struck me as more of a horror film than sci-fi)

Everything seems good when you're a kid. Watch it now.

Hell, even when I saw it in theaters I don't think I was a teenager yet and it was some awful shit. Paul WS Anderson can't seem to make a good movie. You watch he lands the Bioshock director's seat just for all the horrible Resident Evil movies under his belt.

#93

checkeredhat

Look, I like Die Hard 2 and 3 (I even like 4, and would go so far to saying I like it more than 2, not as much as 3), but neither are "MUST SEE" films, while Die Hard 1 is. Same with Lethal Weapon 3. I can actually see a legitimate argument being made for Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 both being there, but 3 is only a decent action film, not an amazing one.
And even the Addams Family, I like those movies well enough, but I wouldn't classify them both as must see. Maybe one of them, cause the Addams Family is a pretty big thing in North American pop culture, but both?

#94

checkeredhat

And just.. yeah, suff like that. There aren't really too many films on this list I look at and think are bad, just, not as important to see, not as groundbreaking or innovative, or as prevalent in pop culture.

#95

drifter

I mentioned it before, but I guess it got overlooked; my suggestion of Bloodsport was a joke, unless we're including "so bad they're good" movies. It does not belong anywhere on this list. Well, unless you think Van Damme was popular enough to be considered culturally relevant in any way. And if you do think that, then Bloodsport belongs in action, not comedy.

Musical: Dr Horrible's Sinalong blog. I know it was a web-series first-SHUDDAP!

To be fair, I don't think there ARE 1001 movies I'd call absolute must-sees. That's a pretty high number.
Anyway, for my money, I'd add some of the oldies. And I mean Das Boot (war), Battleship Potempkin (war), The great Dictator (comedy), L'arrivée du Train (errr...Honestly, where *would* I class that?), otto e mezze (drama?),....

Updated. PatrThom , Ladyhawke was already listed under "Adventure".

Romance/drama: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind: Not sure which genre to stick it to, but either way people have to see it any way.

Animation: Vampires in Havana: This is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen, you have to see it at least once.

Animation/family:Wreck-it Ralph: I love this damn movie with a great message that I'm not spoiling.

Sci-fi: 1980s Flash Gordon: As I've said before, both awful and awesome at the same time. You will be a different person after watching it.

Horror: Cabin In the Woods. I don't really know how to say anything about this movie without giving anything away. It's a love letter to the horror genre that has brought "meta" to the cabin in the woods genre as "Scream" did with the slasher genre. But I can guarantee that it has one of the most iconic scenes in horror history that will be remembered fondly for years. Basically there is a point where shit hits the fan, and that fan is called "Purge Button".

Fantasy: Stardust
This is the lovechild that Legend and The Princess Bride gave birth to in the recent decade. Lovingly based on a story by Neil Gaiman the story is your typical hero's journey, but with plenty of twists, turns, and a good number of pleasant surprises. It's quirky, funny, and has some of the most memorable quotes I can think of in recent history. Please. Please. Please. See this movie.

Action: Dredd
Fuck Stalone. Karl Urban does the character proud by playing the Judge as a cold, calculating, persistent messenger of lethal justice. The Judge and his new rookie partner find themselves cut off from reinforcements when a crime boss named "Mama" seals the building complex she operates out of, and sends out every underling available to rid her of her "pest" problem.

Animation: Twice Upon a Time
A forgotten treasure of the 80's and Lucasfilm. This animated masterpiece follows the misadventures of Ralph the All-Purpose Animal (Voiced by Lorenzo Music of "Garfield" fame) and his silent partner Mumford. The two unwittingly assist an evil man in his plot to give the world eternal nightmares and must quickly turn their lives around and become the heroes they always wanted to be.

Animation: Wreck-It-Ralph
There is no denying it. This movie is hands-down the best video game movie ever.

Action: Kung Fu Hustle
You don't need an explanation. You just need a trailer.

#109

Shawn

Shawn

Action: Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained
There is a reason that Tarantino has the right to inflate his own ego by giving Brad Pitt the final line of "I think this might be my masterpiece" at the end of Basterds. Because I think it truly is one of the greatest films he has ever directed. But both Basterds and Django share a crucial element that makes them must-sees-before-you-die. That element: Christopher Waltz. When it comes to Tarantino films there are always two things you'll find in every movie. Disturbing violence and conversation. Waltz is the ultimate conversationalist. When he speaks you are entranced. Don't believe me? Watch the opening act of Basterds. He is the perfect villain. Calm. Intelligent. Polite. Ruthless.
In Django he's pretty much the same character, but this time he's a good guy. Plus this film gives him some memorable quotes that will keep you chuckling for hours.
Waltz isn't the only thing to watch the films for. There is plenty of good stuff from everyone in these films. The infamous "Bear-Jew" scene in Basterds always gets me snickering at the same time as averting my eyes.
And both films end with some of the most brutal and yet satisfying acts of violence I have ever seen in film (with the exception of Cabin In The Woods).
