All of em except the betting, here. (not that I wouldn't, I just haven't had cause to wager outside of a casino setting since school).

And those are the mundane "stupid laws." Doesn't even count all the dumb laws like "illegal to hold a goose on sunday" type stuff that is scattered around the country.

The bet with your friends thing is only illegal if the pot goes over 2k. The disturbing writing and markers is only illegal in some states. The wifi thing like at Starbucks is only if you aren't a paying customer

Man, my friends and I bet over absolutely everything. For example, we were at dinner at a Chinese joint and we decided whichever one of us had the most words in our fortune on our fortune cookie had to pay for dinner, if more than one person has the same amount of words, they split the bill.

The news article in the gambling section is disturbing, the one about the guy that got shot by the SWAT team. I didn't know a cop could promote criminal activity like that in order to gain an arrest.

I read that and went, nah, that can't be right, but there wasn't an article attached from a "reliable source" (did that on purpose cause what is reliable on the internet anymore?)

It sounds as though he made the bet with the cop, and raised the stakes of his own accord. We can't put the idea in their head, but as long as they want to keep upping the ante, it's all fair.

As for the SWAT team... we don't know the full circumstances behind that raid... it could be that there were weapons involved on his end, it could be that the officer became overzealous and shot too soon. Without hearing an AAR, it's not my place to deconstruct with a citation.

I am thinking he didn't want to pay and a gun might be involved. Like you told us before, police don't shot their gun willy nilly (at least most don't right?) plus it can get expensive when people die. I remember you broke it down for Amy.

It's worse for SWAT members because they're a high-visibility branch. It doesn't surprise me that they would have been called up to serve a warrant on this guy once his betting broke the Federal level, because that's what a lot of departments do with their SWAT teams - serve major warrants. However, there's always a risk, and even though this guy was just doing some betting, depending on how entry was made, he might have thought his home was being invaded, and drew his privately-owned firearm for home defense.

Like I said, without knowing particulars, I don't think any of us can weigh in for or against the dude.
