So, after talking on the IRC, I mentioned that there were one or two jobs I would be loathe to apply for. It's not that I think I'm above the station or too lazy for the job, but I either oppose the idea of the job on principles or feel the job would be detrimental to my health.

I wish to avoid fast food because of the greasy sheen the skin tends to attract. I know it is hard work and respect those who do it, I just can't bring myself to do it. The second job is a job alert I received involving a payday lender (which brought on the discussion). I find the idea of a payday lender deplorable and the interest levels are downright loan shark like.

If you were looking for work and found yourself desperate, is there any job you would avoid like it came with a side order of the plague?

I wouldn't want to be a waiter just because I don't like the idea of my pay being so unreliable. I mean there's no guarantee that I'll have just an absolute shitty week and hardly make anything. Sure some places all split the tips but I'd always feel like either I'm getting money I didn't earn or that someone else on staff is. I like knowing that if I work X hours I'll make Y amount of money, and it'll be the money that I earned because I did my job.


Still though, I know you can still make good money so I'm kind of considering it.

So no, there is literally no job I wouldn't do - short of being illegal - if I absolutely had to. This is what separates a successful, driven person from someone who whines all day about how shitty their life is.

I actually take personal issue with this thread. It makes me angry. Last year I lost my job in November due to my department going under; I was interviewing to be a car salesman because the economy was so shitty, and no one was hiring. That's right, a car salesman. It was embarrassing and way below my level, but you know what - it would put food on the fucking table. Luckily, I scored a job interview for current position and then scored a temp job at another university. But had that not happened, I would have gladly taken a shit job just to make ends meet.

I don't take exception to the thread but I do agree with you, Chaz. But the trouble with that is that people don't hire you if they think you are only there for a short time. I got turned down by Target, Wal-Mart and a few other choice places. I had to take some of my education off of my resume to get a call back!

When I was looking last May food service was really my lowest point but if I hadn't found anything I would have worked at McDonalds where my sister would have been my boss. I am so glad I got my campsite job. I hated cleaning the fish grinder but goddamn at least I wasn't flipping burgers in a greasefilled box.

In reality the job I really wouldnt take would be jobs that involve the slaughter of large animals or the process of their meat. The emotional toll that would take on me wouldn't be worth the money. Frankly Id rather live in a cardboard box. Hell I'd live in my van and crap in a box before Id take that job.

I lied on my car salesman interview. For education I changed my major and the school I went to, and focused on highlighting my cleaning buisness - they're not going to request transcripts at a car dealer. I knew it was going to be a temp job while I looked for another one.

UPS is pretty good and flexible with hours. I know during the holidays things really pick up for them. Again, sorry if my post sounded like it was specifically directed at you. It wasn't.

I'd do pretty much anything, but I don't have a whole lot of self-respect anymore.

I agree being one of those pay-day lenders would be tough though. I've seen too many people ruin their lives with them. They add up quicker than people expect, and it would be hard to know I'm contributing to that. As long as I can go home and take my dog for a walk at the end of the day, I'd be able to deal with almost anything.

It depends how desperate I was. If I was truly desperate than i would take any job even if it was only to keep me fed and clothed while I looked for another job. But if I wasn't to desperate than I would try to avoid several types of jobs.



Medical field job (I had to watch my parents go in and out of hospitals way to many times growing up)

Fast Food (having to deal with bitchy customers all day)

Telemarketer (I am not the most outgoing and social person)

Car salesman (I would hate to know I am helping people go into debt)

I am sure there are a few others but those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

If you get the UPS gig, I would take it! I'm sure it will be loading trucks. It's a tough job, but pay is decent, and there are pretty decent opportunities to advance. If I wasn't in school, I'd probably be working for them or finding a construction job.

I dig what Chaz is saying though. I have and will work any job to make ends meet. I have wiped old people's asses. I have flipped burgers. I have worked assembly line for 3M. I have "chopped" cotton. Even after I get the PhD, if I have to do any of the above to get food on the table, I'll do it.

Those lame jobs aren't careers. They're a means to an end. Use them as motivation to advance yourself to something better. A blank spot on the resume may reflect poorly on you. Anyhow, good luck with the search!

Having said all that, I don't want to work in a call center ever again. It made me really dislike people and t.v. There are some seriously jacked up people out there who go nuts if their t.v. isn't working or can't get a certain ball game. Ugh. I'd rather work fast-food again before working there.

I'd do anything really. Just make it through the days because I'd need the pay while of course searching for a better job.

I've done factory and construction work, I've worked in deep freeze and sanitary work. While not great for morale, in the end you just need the money and it has taught me to respect those who end up lower end jobs long term a whole lot more for sticking with it.

I would do anything. Luckily I have a great job, but if push came to shove I would take anything, and when I was younger I did. The thing about bad jobs is that no one expects you to stay. I've taken bad jobs and left a week later because I found a better one. The manager was ticked but I could have cared less.

Edit: The key word in the question is desperate. When I am not desperate I am incredibly picky.

I suppose I should have said that. The point before desperation was what I was aiming at. I'm sure if my financial situation called for it, I'd work almost any job, no matter how much I hated it.
