My classes are done. I've got some free time on my hands. That means it's time to jump on the bandwagon. Anything you want to know about me? Aussie and our kids? Hawaii? I'll do my best to answer.

I B A SAW!

I'll ask questions later.

Ok, it's later.

Don't you ever get sick of all the beautiful weather and sandy beaches?

Do your kids complain about having nothing to do?

How long before a halforumite would wear out their welcome in casa de poptart?

It's not always beautiful weather. This time of the year it gets rainy which makes the ocean water dirty for a few days. It's really gross.

Do your kids complain about having nothing to do?
Lily complains more than Noah. She's not as good at independent activities as he is. The place we moved to isn't as roomy and we don't have yard space. Playgrounds are too far away for them to walk to. It sucks since I used to tell them to go out to play when they were bored in the house.

How long before a halforumite would wear out their welcome in casa de poptart?
Three days. That's usually my threshold when my parents come to visit.

What food do you think everyone should try when the visit Hawaii?
That's tough. There's a lot and it depends on what you like and which island. Shave ice with ice cream and condensed milk (a "snowcap") is a given. Spam musubi, manapua (kind of like char siu bao), kalua pig, shrimp from one of the trucks on Oahu's North Shore (there's debate over Giovanni's or Mackey's being the best, but either is good), and while you're there go to Opals for some of the best Thai food ever. Oh and coco puffs from Liliha Bakery! :D

Um...I might make it through the song once. It isn't exactly my favorite.

Where else have you lived besides Hawaii?
Several places in New Jersey. Coronado and ChulaVista, California. Honolulu and Ewa Beach, Hawaii. I almost moved to Las Vegas when I was in my late 20s, but it didn't work out.

Where do you really want to visit one day?
Vancouver, B.C. since Aussie tells me it's nice. I'd love to travel in Europe, too.

Doomweasels - best ever, amiright?
I'd rather have two or three ferrets than a cat or dog. Though I told my parents once that ferrets were like training for dealing with a 2 year old.

Have you ever thought "Fuck it, gecko fricassee for dinner"?
They're too small and cute. I've killed one by accident. I was quite distraught over it.[DOUBLEPOST=1450211857,1450211575][/DOUBLEPOST]
Of all of Aussie's assigned ports, which was your favorite to live at/near? Which was his?
I didn't live there with him, but his place in Sicily was amazing. It had a gorgeous view of Mt. Etna and you could see the Mediterranean. There was a giant hill on the way to the base and an awesome coffee "bar" near the bottom. He liked being stationed in Sicily, too. His favorite ports to visit, though, were Hong Kong; Sasebo and Yokosuka in Japan; and British Columbia, Canada.

How is grad school?

How is grad school?
Grade-wise I've done well this semester. I found one class to be boring because it was a review of everything I learned in my psych undergrad. The only difference was more of an emphasis on systems theory/ecological perspective. That worked to my advantage, though, because the professor assigned several not-so-short articles to read in addition to textbook chapters each week.
I really enjoyed Ethics and Law. I've had an interest in being a court appointed advocate for children since I looked at it as a possibility for my bachelor's capstone. This class made me consider studying law. For about 20 seconds until I came to my sense at least. LOL! Too much money and I already feel I'm spreading myself thin.

Stitch from the movie or tv show Stitch?

Ok, so...lest I seem SUPER creepy, you had left clues a few times more than once, but I had never taken an official guess. An AMA seemed like a good time. It was the first name that popped into my head, but I only remember him for his involvement in the WORST HOCKEY TRADE EVERimage.jpeg
I'm sorry if you didnt want that common knowledge, but I always wondered if I was right.

Stitch from the movie or tv show Stitch?
I'm not familiar with TV show Stitch, was he really that different? Let's say Movie Stitch just to stay consistent...

I don't remember hinting about it more than once, but I also know my mind is like a sieve. I didn't find it creepy, but it was a surprise. Kind of like the first time someone said it right and I found out about Jocelyn! I've got my maiden name on my FB profile, so it's not exactly secret. I think it's neat that you guessed.

I'd rather have a roomful of ferrets than one movie Stitch. In the tv show he's still mischievous, but less rabid hedgehog.[DOUBLEPOST=1450242115,1450242031][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, Lindros was a prick. I met him once.

The movie would definitely be Amélie (aka Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain).

I'm going to have to think about the book and song.

If you could pick one book, one movie, and one song to give to your kids so as adults they might understand you better what would they be?
Well, this isn't a book. I'd end up leaving them my whole Goodreads favorites list, honestly. Anyway, there are two poems I'd give them.

The first is "Roofs" by Joyce Kilmer.

The road is wide and the stars are out
And the breath of the night is sweet,
And this is the time when wanderlust should seize upon my feet.
But I'm glad to turn from the open road and the starlight on my face,
And to leave the splendour of out-of-doors for a human dwelling place.

I never have seen a vagabond who really liked to roam
All up and down the streets of the world and not to have a home:
The tramp who slept in your barn last night and left at break of day
Will wander only until he finds another place to stay.

A gypsy-man will sleep in his cart with canvas overhead;
Or else he'll go into his tent when it is time for bed.
He'll sit on the grass and take his ease so long as the sun is high,
But when it is dark he wants a roof to keep away the sky.

If you call a gypsy a vagabond, I think you do him wrong,
For he never goes a-travelling but he takes his home along.
And the only reason a road is good, as every wanderer knows,
Is just because of the homes, the homes, the homes to which it goes.

They say that life is a highway and its milestones are the years,
And now and then there's a toll-gate where you buy your way with tears.
It's a rough road and a steep road and it stretches broad and far,
But at last it leads to a golden Town where golden Houses are.
The second is "The Storyteller" by Erin Hanson
She has a bookshelf for a heart,
And ink runs through her veins,
She'll write you into her story,
With the typewriter in her brain,
Her bookshelf's getting crowded,
With all the stories that she's penned,
Of the people who flicked through her pages,
But closed the book before the end,
And there's one pushed to the very back,
That sits collecting dust,
With its title in her finest writing,
"The One's Who Lost My Trust",
There's books she's scared to open,
And books she doesn't close,
Stories of every person she's met,
Stretched out in endless rows,
Some people have only a sentence,
While others once held a main part,
Thousands of inky footprints,
That they've left across her heart,
You might wonder why she does this,
Why write of people she once knew?
But she hopes one day she'll mean enough,
For someone to write about her too.

For a song:

Yes! Or I'd simplify it for people like a PE teacher I had: Letter T and a bow like in archery. I used to love being asked why it had so many letters. Like I made this name up on my own.

Just don't go looking for good Mexican restaurant. Oahu has plenty of places that say they are Mexican, but you eat it and the confusion sets in. What is this? Why am I eating it? Is this really teriyaki instead of carne asada?

I asked that because I was curious to know if there were any stereotypes like the ones we get about igloos etc.

Aniston or Jolie? (we always ask every new hire at work this one on their first day. There is an interesting trend!)

And from my daughter, does it ever snow there?

There are, like how we all live the slow island life (hahaha). Some of it is perpetuated by the tourism industry though. People want the illusion, so they sell it.

coke or pepsi?
Coke. I used to drink Pepsi, but something about it started to upset my stomach.

Aniston or Jolie? (we always ask every new hire at work this one on their first day. There is an interesting trend!)
Jennifer!

And from my daughter, does it ever snow there?
We don't get snow on our island (Oahu). On the island of Hawaii, aka "The Big Island", they get snow on the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa mountains. They had a snowstorm on Mauna Kea in July this year. Right now on Mauna Kea it's -3 C, but at my house it's 28 C.

#37

Oh and I should add that Mauna Kea is the mountain where there are several observatories and large telescopes including one that Canada operates with the UK and the Netherlands (James Clerk Maxwell Telescope) and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope.

LOL! They had freezing rain and black ice near the observatories. Currently it's 23F up there (the observatories are around 13,700 feet above sea level). They were going to open the access road today, but the university website says it's still closed.
However, further to the west and at a much lower elevation, it's 76F with a strong, cool breeze.

In the North Shore area there is a place called Waimea Valley that is just beautiful. It's a historical site, botanical garden, and a waterfall. The main "trail" is paved, so it's easy to walk. Plus they have activities to teach about the ancient Hawaiian culture and conservation. It's touristy, but locals go there too. North Shore itself is my favorite area on this island.
Honestly, you can take me any where like a botanical garden, wildlife conservation site, or the beach and I'm happy.

#44

What's the one Hawaiian comfort food everyone should learn how to make?
Saimin, which is kind of the Hawaiian version of ramen. It's great when you have a cold and not hard to make.
Wikipedia says,
It is a soup dish of soft wheat egg noodles served in hot dashi garnished with green onions. Kamaboko, char siu, sliced Spam, linguiça, and nori may be added, among other additions. Saimin shares a great deal of commonality to Okinawa Soba with regards to noodles and broth, with the biggest difference being the toppings. China and Okinawa had close relations at one time. It is possible that an alternate explanation for the origin of saimin comes from the historical relationship between the two Asian cultures.
I'd also put haupia up there because who doesn't want a gelatinous coconut custard? That makes it sound weird, but one bite and you'll want to eat a pan of it.
