anime is offically uncool again, and I am sad

Bones

Bones

so I walked into one of my local best buys, doing the usual go look at stuff probably buy some anime and movies. this kind of normal ritual for a guy named Bones. and I can't find the anime section, I look and I look and its no where to be found. I ask a bunch of people before the floor manager finally tells me that they are sorry but they will no longer be carrying anime...so I went to another best buy, and another, and another....no best buy is carrying anime anymore....this basically leaves me fye and suncoast as my only sources of brick and mortar retailers of anime.

needless to say I am a little depressed, but I guess it just means I will be buying online from now on...

This. You can also probably find a local comic shop that has an anime section as well, or one that simply specializes in it.

#OtakuSnob: If you were a real collector you'd be living in Japan and buying direct.

hmmm, yes I could be like all the other crazies and dream of living in japan were my large American looks would draw mostly xenophobic fear and anger...OR...I could just do what most sane people do and realize it is JUST a hobby after all. :D

lol, my favorite is the little white kids who watch tons of anime (and their own "anime" names, WTF is up with that bullshit?) and talk all day about how they should just move to Japan because thats the only place they will ever fit in.

Yeah. Give that a shot. Let me know how it works for you.

A quick web search found that Best Buy quit carrying Anime in February '09. You guys missed out on some awesome sales back then.

Actually, come to think of it, your definition of right wing is kind of off. Unless you're talking about social conservatives, of which I am definitely not one.

They may not have an anime section, but I know they still carry anime.

Unless they've changed since Sunday.

I was in Best Buy a few weeks ago and was very tempted to get the Samurai 7 box set. BluRay for I think $60 or $70? Can't remember.

Enormous Anime sections at all 6 Best Buys in my area.

It's just you/your area.

Severely reduced at one location and big as always at another , I buy all mine online at this point anyway

Maybe Best Buy has stopped selling anime, because they sell all their movies at 30+ bucks a disc, and it's particularly egregious when some anime discs only have 3-4 episodes.

It has been UNofficially uncool for years now, I'm glad Best Buy is finally recognizing that and making it (apparently) official.

Anime is and has always been a niche market, with niche prices... and considering vast swaths of the Anime community would simply rather download a fansub off the net two-three days after the show airs in Japan than wait for a DVD, it's hard to blame them for the prices. Hell, pretty soon it's going to be a lucky day if you get a dubbed track, because the profit margins have become so low that HIRING A VOICE ACTOR is beyond their budget.

And honestly, this is one of the crappiest at the moment. Everything has devolved into excuses for oppai and pantsu, even games, without a hint of intelligence or wit to be found... all in an attempt to solidify Anime's grip on the lonely Otaku of Japan. Look, I know there is a huge economic downturn going on in Japan right now and Anime makers are concerned about making money in such an economy, but your running your chances of selling Anime overseas.

Aww, c'mon, Highschool Of The Dead isn't representative of the entire anime market (seriously, someone should get Charlie to watch that thing - just remember to stay on standby with a camera so we can capture the precise point at which his brain crawls out of his skull in self-defence). I will admit that this hasn't been one of the best seasons, though.

Personally, I wouldn't say that all the commercialised, trashy shows popping up at the moment represent the downfall of anime - they've always been around, it's just that they rapidly get condemned to obscurity whilst we remember the good stuff. Just look at some of the awful series that were being churned out in the eighties and nineties, for a start.

I think I may just be upset about just how fanservicey they've made HSOTD, when compared to the manga. The manga did have quite a bit of fanservice, but it wasn't every page... where as in the anime, it's popping up every 2 minutes and we're getting entire new scenes devoted to it. I certainly don't remember anyone using anyone else's breasts as a platform for sniping before.

As for gaming, if you look at the best sellers in Japan in each week, your going to see Idol and Romance simulators popping up quite a bit. Not every week, as if there is a big release it'll usually do well, but often enough to raise concerns about where they are aiming their market.

Since when has Best Buy been the fucking metric of cool?

#44

Bones

its not, but they use to be a major supplier of my habit. I will show you pictures later so you can understand what I mean. It looks like they recently decided they had enough and began shrinking their anime sections down to one "planogram" or about 4 foot long 5 foot tall section of shelving. also where the hell does espy live that he is within striking distance of MoA? I live in the twin cities, but I am not THAT close.

Honestly, they haven't added all that much.

Yeah... I don't particularly appreciate the idea that America would nuke every country in the world just because our President had been bitten and we'd lose the ability to launch them for awhile once he died.
