Boogedy Boogedy Boo! (aka: horror recommendations)

Halloween's approachin and like many people, I've got a craving for blood, guts, freaks and frights (sounds like my prom night? :Leyla:). One thing I plan on doing is playing through Costume Quest again. Haven't played it since last late October and I think it'll be an annual thing. But movies is where I'm mostly looking at.

With that in mind, I need some recommendations for horror-related stuff. I used to be a huge horror buff and seen a great deal of classics. There's a few that I've missed for whatever reason, like the original Fright Night. The recommendations don't have to be just movies, either. Maybe some of your favourite Twilight Zone or especially Tales from the Crypt or Masters of Horror episodes.

So far on my planned list includes:
-Trick 'R Treat
-Killer Klowns from Outer Space
-Demon Knight
-At least some of the Nightmare on Elm St movies
-Slither
-Night of the Living Dead (1990 remake, which I think I like the most because it was my first zombie movie, not for any quality reasons)
-Child's Play
-Maybe Hellraiser 1 & 2, but this list is getting pretty long already.

What else, folks?

Brazilian copy of REC
Brazilian copy of REC2

You need nothingelse. Best two horror films, period.

If you need more:

28 Days
28 Weeks

If you want shorter movies with good "oomph"

Masters of Horror:
Imprint
Pick Me Up

You know, I never saw REC or REC 2. Saw Quarantine, which wasn't terrible.

And the "28" movies? Saw them once ages ago and...I don't know, they were okay. I was never crazy about them.

Oh, another on my list, because I loved it when I was younger:

-Tales from the Darkside: The Movie

I will always ALWAYS recommend REC and REC2 as my all time favorite horror movies ever made. It may be due to my latin heritage but it strikes every single cord right. The acting is spot on and the effects/screams are 100% fantastic.

The Thing (80s version)
The Descent

Ditch 28 Days, though I thought 28 Weeks was much better.

#6

ThatNickGuy

Oh man, I haven't seen The Descent or especially The Thing in ages. Spot on, mate. And I agree with you on 28 Weeks. I think that one managed to separate itself from other zombie-esque movies and be more about a virus/contagion. I loved the sniper-shooting scene. It's one of the only times that convinced me running zombies could work.

Sheg: I'm now in the middle of "obtaining" both REC and REC 2. Got hardcoded subtitle versions to boot!

Come to think of it, I've been meaning to see REC as well. I'll have to check Netflix.

Never been much of a Horror guy. Except for Zombie movies, but if you're including the Night of the Living Dead remake but none of Romero's films, I'm guessing you've considered them already and decided elsewise.
Also, Alien.

#9

ThatNickGuy

ThatNickGuy

Yeah. As I said, it's not even remotely anything to do with quality. The Romero films are top notch. But like Batman Forever, I have an odd soft spot for the 1990 remake.

Ooh, Alien's a good call, though.

The House of the Devil is one I always recommend.

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Oh yes, definitely House of the Devil. I keep forgetting that little gem.

If you're not too keen on "quality" I recommend Dead and Breakfast. Pretty good lil "cheesy" horror flick.

Why not throw some classics in there;

Psycho (original)
Halloween (original)
Rosemary's Baby
The Shining (Kubrick)
The Thing (already mentioned)

The 90's version was very good. No need to defend it.

I would consider adding:
- Ghostbusters (I know you've already seen it. Everyone has. Watch it again.)
- Scream
- The Thing (like everyone else said)
- Ju-on
- Poltergeist
- Evil Dead
- The Crow (it's not scary, but it IS a Halloween movie)
- The Exorcist

Evil Dead II
Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man)
Creepshow
An American Werewolf in London
Dog Soldiers
Drag Me to Hell
The Cottage
I Sell the Dead
Tucker and Dale vs Evil

I like horror with a bit of humor in it. :-D

Why the Brazilian copy of REC, Shego? Is there something different about their DVD release? I just watched the second one on the region 1 DVD.

But yes, highly recommended, both of them.

In addition to what's been said already:

Dog Soldiers (Neil Marshall again)
Dog House (stupid as hell, but I found it pretty funny)
Black Sheep (also stupid as hell, but funny)
Shaun of the Dead (just in case you somehow haven't watched it)
Zombieland (maybe the best American zombie movie in years)
La Horde (solid French zombie movie, available here as "The Horde")
30 Days of Night (Flawed, but occasionally intense, and we need more vampire movies like this)

What I meant was that there's REC (Brazilian movie) and Quarantine (American version of REC). I MUCH preferred REC.

Another movie that wasn't mentioned that's fantastically squemish? Cabin Fever!

Isn't REC Spanish?

Not that it matters to the rec ( :awesome: ) of course, people should watch it!

No, no, you watch that on Beltaine :D.

I don't think the original's good for horror except late on--it's just a damn good movie.

You probably didn't mention it because he already had it on his list. It certainly belongs though; it's a masterpiece in my opinion. While everyone else was doing crappy synthesizer music and slashers were all the rage, Hellraiser decided to be moody and suspenseful.

Crap you're right, I didn't re-read the list.

Masterpiece is the perfect word. I honestly enjoy them all for each of their own quirks, cept the ones where Pinhead is more of a cameo than a feature.

Heh, funny story. My older sister - VERY reluctantly - brought me to see Hellraiser IV in theatres when I was 16 or 17 (basically not old enough to get in on my own). She can't stand horror, gore, or anything of the sort. So her face was buried in her hands about 90% of the movie. :D Poor girl. But she totally rules for taking me.

Oh I wasn't knocking it. I actually haven't even seen that one. I was just saying those are really all I'd be able to suggest but its obvious you'd already considered them.

If you're a fan of Romero films, you should definitely watch the 90's remake. Of course Romero wasn't directly involved in that one, but Tom Savini was the director. Savini is the special-effects wizard who was behind Dawn of the Dead (1978), and he had Romero's blessing. He stayed true to Romero's style when he directed the remake, and the whole thing comes off a merely an update with better special-effects that keeps the same quality characters and atmosphere. It's not quite as good as the original overall, but it's damn close.

Except the chick in that one looks like Justin Bieber's half retarded cousin.

Speaking of retarded half-cousins...

I love the Return of the Living Dead series (the ones with Tarman). They're great for a fun, cheesy horror fest.

YES. This one. This movie literally scared me for years when I was a kid. I was afraid those damn balls were waiting around every friggin corner. I had to open my closet door from the side for a while for fear of the final scene.

Trivia: The ball moved so realistically creepy because Coscarelli hired a pro baseball player to throw it, rather than have it on wires. Brilliant. I love Coscarelli.

I am a HUGE horror buff. The problem is you already know the good ones. I don't know what directors in the 70s were on, but it was some creepy stuff. Makes me wonder if there was something naturally conducive to horror in the Post-Vietnam climate. They were good at the psychological scare. Not much of a fan of the newer stuff, because gory just isn't scary. It may be uncomfortable and gross, but it's not scary. It doesn't keep me up wondering if it's under the bed.

Why has nobody yet mentioned Night of the Creeps?
(And no, Slither isn't exactly the same)

Haven't actually seen it myself, but one person nearby also recommends Splinter.

So far, I've watched Demon Knight, Elm Street 3, Night of the Living Dead (1990), and Trick 'R Treat. Cinemasacre's series of quick reviews of the Elm Street movies got me in the mood for them, so now I'm moving on with 4. I watched the first one not too long ago, so skipping it for now. Might go back to it. :D

#43

Philosopher B.

Splinter was pretty good for its budget, but I wouldn't say it's movie marathon material next to most of the other films in this thread. It's def worth a watch, though.

Right, sorry. I figured I missed it somewhere.

Might I suggest The Exorcist III? Skip the rest.
