Saw a couple posts on this. I picked it up last night and would like to get some online play going. Its a fantastic game btw, Diablo with guns really isnt a bad way to describe it. Lots of fun. Just need some peeps to play with.

I'm so tempted to get that game right now but having recently purchased the ultimate sith edition and aiming to get modern warfare 2 next week I wish I could afford it.

once i get around to forwarding my ports i will play with you. what level are you?

14 I think, that port forwarding thing is one of so many slipshod pieces of design in that game. That said the actual playing is fantastic, never played a game like this before. Just wish there werent all the stupid problems like the port forwarding and the microphone issues. I mean, what the fuck were they thinking with the mic thing?

gah.....fucking console players. You know you're the reason there are all the technical issues with this game that there are (it was a console to PC port). Does that bother you? Does it!?!?!? It should, you bastards.

Just kidding (kind of). Its such a fantastic game, very glad to see people are picking it up. Coming out at the same time as DAO may be pretty rough on its sales.

Also, I just wrote a review of it you can get to here.

meh, i could play it for either, though i prefer the keyboard mouse, my roommate, and my friends all play their shit on the 360. and since I liek playing with friends...yeah, i got that. and its great.

I have no problem playing it on a console.

Shegokigo

Mostly the reason why I don't play much on console is due to the fact that there is no modding community.

Some games like Mass Effect, which aren't moddable, can go either way for me, but something like Fallout 3 would never have been plausible.

Shannow

Care less about the mods when it is about playign with friends

Friends move on and play other things, mods will continue to be made for years, keeping most games fresh and interesting to play.

Honestly, I'm not knocking it at all. I personally have more fun on WoW when I'm playing with my brother than when I'm grouping with strangers, so I get where you're coming from. Co-Op with him on Starcraft as well.

I guess I just see Borderlands as more of a single player game than a MMPOG.

really? Because it plays pretty much just like an mmo. And its jsut great playing it with the guys and going through it that way.

But yes, most shooters I would rather play on the pc, this one, not so much.

Hm, maybe I had the wrong conceptions about the game. I'll do more digging.

grinding, leveling, spec trees to go with leveling, quests, kill quests, bosses, random drops that are greens, blues and purples.

They wanted to make an mmo.

I can't even fathom the thought of a console MMO.... oh wait.... FFXI :eek:rly:

#18

Shannow

Well, yes, there was that. A game I will try to forget, thanks for reminding me of that horrible experience on both pc and 360.

But borderlands is not an mmo, just plays like one mixed with a fps. Fun as all hell, console or otherwise.

100% agree with this post in all it's glory.

I've been following Borderlands for a long ass time now, and I never once thought "Oh man that's going to be fun to play in co-op." It just always had a single player vibe to me, even with all the multiple guns and whatnots. Honestly, a story like this (At least what I've read about it) I think I'd rather play solo so I got the whole "Hero" experience to it, not to mention the loneliness and desperation I've come to expect from Post-apocalypse gaming.

Borderland aside though I honestly don't see many console games as co-op yet. I don't know if it's a failing on my part, or what, but there are very few console games I think I'd enjoy playing coop with things like L4D and old school Gauntlet clones being the exception. Maybe I've just not found the right experience.

RE5 was made for co op.

I don't why they'd take a predominately single player series and FORCE you to play with someonelse. What if someone doesn't have "gamer buddies" and has no desire to "pug it online".

#25

jasonisgreat

Agreed. I thought that game was great as co-op. My friend and I must have played through it three times, at least.

As for Borderlands, I've played an equal amount of single player and co-op. The single player is fun, but the higher difficulty in co-op makes the game even better.

Re5 is definitely a pickup I'll take once I see that Steam special.

And Shego, you can always play with me. *bats eyes*

Is it really unplayable single player?

Not that I would mind gaming with you SeriousJay, I just play in "spurts" sometimes.

At first I shunned Borderlands because it sounded asinine at first to have a MMOFPS that was single-to-4 player... but then I realized the thing I hate about most MMOs are the other players. Like a bolt out of the blue, it occured to me : this is the game Mrs. Gasbandit and I have always wanted.

Borderlands is not a single player game. Its also not an MMO. What it is is the first successful attempt at recreating the Diablo experience. The amount of similarities in play style are stagering, the only major thing that is missing is the lack of randomly generated maps.

Coop is great because it doesn't take a lot of overt team work to make a good team. I have found more often then not that groups will quickly start working together without ever having to say anything to each other. This, if you remember, is almost exactly how Diablo played.

The itemization is fantastic, and the FPS action is remarkably good. The enemies are well thought out and interesting, although the variety is slightly more limited than I would like. The game plays fast and very very fun.

The only issues I have with the game come down to the technical issues surrounding the PC port. Its not bugs/crashes, but more microphone and menu implementation.

Seriously, this game is an absolute must have for anyone that enjoyed Diablo. Seriously. I'm super cereal.

Edit:

Oh yeah, and its funny as hell:

It has some of the best voice acting I have ever heard (remember that the context is humor). I can't find a good audio clip of Scooter (by far the funniest, but here's his voice saying something not that funny

Now imagine that guy saying this stuff

"Hey go find my friend Lucky, and by friend I mean scumbag asshole who messed up all my mommas girl parts"

"Thanks for fixing the catch-a-ride station. That thing was more messed up than my momma's girl parts. Thanks for taking a poke at that. The catch-a-ride station, not my mom."

"Hey, Scooter says don't walk, drive! My daddy always said wheels were better than heels. Uh, he was paralyzed, though. Anyway, don't walk, drive!"

I just acquired a borrowed copy of this game.

It actually is PLAYABLE on my 1545 laptop. I'm thinking with Win7 and another 2gb of ram it'll run smoothly but, funny enough, it's scaled itself to look like a cell shaded Half Life. Oh, also finished the tutorial level and it really felt kick ass. Can't wait to play this game on a big screen :D

This sums it up perfectly. i jsut lost 4 hours after popping it in. I looked at the clock, suddenly it was 10 pm. Good stuff.

Too bad with MW2 out tomorrow, that will be taking up a lot of game time here.

I'm having lots of fun with this game, m'self. My only lament is that I lack friends with which to play this, since you pretty much need to trust the folks you're grouping with since there's nothing stoping one person from dashing around, hoovering up all the good weapons, forcing you to use quest rewards and vendor bought stuff.

I currently have a lvl 43 Soldier as they seem most well equiped for soloing, but would love to play the Support role for a team.

Anyone interesting in setting up a group run?

Edit: I'm on the PC version

I enjoyed both my play throughs in single player thoroughly. Mind you though there is MUCH less an RPG element to this game than the hype would have you believe. I would call this game Halo-Lite with a diablo style loot system.

I will warn though the story to the game is very sparse and the final boss is kinda out of left field and the ending a bit of a let down.

My advice: Rent it first. It is not a bad game, but know what you are getting before you buy it.

One thing about this game is that one of it's main selling points 'Lots and Lots of Guns' is very true to the point of excess. It can be rather difficult and annoying to select the gun you use, and even then you really need to make use of the 4 weapon slots since what may be an awesome weapon against one enemy may be crap against another.

This is nice for people that want to make the game play the way they want them to, but for anyone that wants to just pick up and start shooting it may seem way, way, way too complicated, because it is.

There's a couple boss fights that are a bit excessively difficult, and the problem there is that, for some of them, there's no easy way to restock ammo since, when you die, you come back exactly as you were when you died, so if you ran out of ammo on one attempt, you may have too hoof it back to the start of the zone where the ammo vendors are, and it's possible that some of the enemys will have respawned by then.

The respawning is annoying, too, especially when it comes to areas you have to run through several times, though usually you do so on a vehicle and you can just roadkill them (Which is highly satisfying, I must say)

My only other complaint is the way most enemys spawn: A set of 2-4 'holes' where there will be 1-2 standing around near the holes. Once you kill those loitering enemys then new ones will start emerging from the holes one at a time. What happens here is that you spot these holes, go waaaay back with a sniper rifle, kill the ones outside, then just pick off the enemys as they emerge from the holes one at a time.

As a whole, it's flawed, but I'm having fun with it still.

How playable is this game single player?
Very. Actually, I was surprised it's MORE playable to me single than multi - the exp split has made it that getting to a certain point in the plot solo left me at level 12, but getting there playing with 1 other person (the little woman) with both of us on new characters, only got me to level 9 and her to level 8. We were only level 8/7 when level 10 "badass skags" started coming into play, and that was pretty painful, whereas when I was single player they weren't a problem.

Is there any way to try it out before buying?

Yeah, ive been soloing it a bit now since MW2 hit, and we are all on that for our multiplayer. Though we still split screen it when there is time.

Been playing solo as the Soldier and it's pretty fun so far. The omgguns aspect does get a little overwhelming, but busting faces with a shotgun is horribly satisfying. I wish the Assault rifles were a little more accurate, though, starting out with one is tough as it hits for nothing and you miss like mad.

The Ranger is cool, but hard to solo with at first. His aim is unsteady with the sniper rifle so it can be hard to line up shots with the way some monsters/mobs zig zag all over or get hung up on terrain.

All in all, though, it's a blast and I'm definitely hooked.
