Borderlands or Fallout 3 GOTY Edition?

I'm looking for an open ended world to play in and while I've probably promoted a bit of Borderlands on this forum I still think Fallout 3 is a cool open ended world.

I got the original game when it came out and haven't gotten any of the add ons that came with it.

So I decided to forego a console game purchase and opt for a PC one instead due to price budgets this fall.

Are the add ons for fallout 3 pretty good? I dont mind getting the game of the year edition because I can give away my original copy of it.

To anyone whose played Borderlands at least for the console version would it be worth my investment or stay in familiar territory with fallout?

Usually my weekends are pretty quiet here on campus and would prefer a decent rpg to invest a few hours in.

I haven't played a game as much as I played Fallout since I first got my original copy of WoW.

I dunno how much more I could vouch for Fallout. :thumb:

BUT! I played the PC version, which is a 10x more phenomenal game thanks to the modding community. I don't think I could ever play it "Vanilla".

As Shego mentioned, the mods are what makes Fallout 3 great. Play it through once vanilla first, just to get the game mechanics and story down, and then start breaking out the mods.

As for the add-ons, opinions vary, but it appears the general consensus is this:

Operation:Anchorage: Linear, combat-intensive, adds a bit of background and lore, but not much. The rewards you get at the end, though, are game-breakingly overpowered.

The Pitt: Nice new area to explore, with a decent storyline and a morally ambiguous choice to make near the end. A few good pieces of equipment, and a nice ammo press for you to make your own ammo out of scrap metal and unneeded ammo types. (Only available at the end though)

Broken Steel: Fixes some of the problems from the vanilla game, mainly the lack of free play after the end of the main quest, and raising the level cap to 30. A few new enemies, new gear, new quests and areas located in the Capital Wasteland.

Point Lookout: A very big new area to explore, quite atmospheric and different from the Capital Wasteland. The storyline is moderately engaging, with one particular nice sequence. The gear you get is interesting, but on the whole not all that powerful or useful. Oh, and the enemies are all absurdly hard.

Mothership Zeta: Like Operation:Anchorage in that it's linear and combat intensive. Some people like that the whole thing takes place on an alien spaceship, others find the difference too much to adjust to. A few pieces of good energy equipment to be had. Personally I found MZ to be the buggiest of the DCLs.

I'm going to go ahead and parrot what others have said. Fallout 3 is an awesome game. If you've only played vanilla, you have a lot more to look forward to in the PC GOTY Edition, not only from the added DLC (some of which, like broken steel, should damn near be required. Others... are kinda boring, but still, more is more) but ALSO because of the huge mod community. HUGE.

Once you've finished with the DLC and reacquainted yourself with the wasteland, start to explore all of the awesome mods that are available. There are mods to make the game prettier (fellout is one everyone always recommends, but I actually miss the green glow and don't play with it anymore), some MUCH needed UI redesigns, and of course full game conversions/new weapons/extra missions/new monsters/etc. What the hell are you waiting for? GO BUY IT RIGHT NOW!

That said... Borderlands is awesome if you want multiplayer diablo-style action. They're really very different games, so keep that in mind.

Yeah, borderlands really isn't an RPG, it's an FPS with a level system.

But I agree, if it's PC fallout, then fallout 3 all the way.

Diablo style action? I thought Borderlands was a FPS?
It's diablo/wow-ish in the sense that you get a quest (in all text) go, to the quest, and turn it in. It's more action oriented than a real rpg.

no dont think hellage london that was a complete flop it had a nice premise but failed to deliver
also i'm familiar withthe original storyling of fallout 3 since i played it like about a dozen times.
only thiing i am not famliiar with are the dlc's.

It's diablo-style in spirit, if not completely in gameplay. It is an FPS, but it has a level system and skills, as well as four different characters (classes) and randomized loot generator, with a library of hundreds of different gun parts randomly assembled on the spot to generate the gun that just dropped off of that guy (within some guidelines).

When I think of Diablo, I think less about the rpg aspects of the game and more about the loot. It's all about the shinies.

Borderlands is the first FPS I'm getting since... hmm... yeah, since half life 2...

I stood before the same choice - either fallout 3 or borderlands.

Don't know why I actually rooted for borderlands... Probably because Fallout 3 is such a huge game and I would be trapped even more in it than in borderlands...

Oh, yeah, and the coop-mode of borderlands also tilted the scale in it's direction... Really looking forward playing the campaign together with others.

Oh, yeah baaaaby, and don't forget about the looting. The looting is where borderlands really shines. It's the "one more level and one more new weapon" effect.

Looting in the game goes like this.

Crap gun, crap gun, crap sheild, crap gun, crap grenade upgrade, crap gun, crap gun, HOLY SHIT PISTOL WITH SCOPE THAT SPITS OUT THIRTY EXPLODING BULLETS EVERY FIVE SECONDS, crap gun, crap sheild, crap gun, crap grenade upgrade, crap gun, crap gun, inventory full, drop cheapest crap gun to pick up slightly more expensive crap gun.

So, just like Diablo's loot system :p

Also, I still Defend my Hellgate: London analogy. They are similar in the basic mechanics. Borderlands is just executed 1000000X better.

Agreed. The basic gameplay design is very similar, H:L was just very poorly executed, for a whole lot of reasons.

Thnks guys I'll think about it more but I'm more leaning to Fallout 3 right at the moment although I'm pretty hyped about ME2 next year.

I'd still say get Boarderlands, but if you can only chose one or the other, Fallout 3 is the better bet.

I currently have a level 24 Siren in the PC version of Borderlands and am loving every minute of it. If you have a full party like I do (a medic Soldier, a Rifleman Soldier, a Gunslinger hunter, Gun-spec'd Siren) then the game is fucking intense and awesome. The vehicle combat is reminiscent of Mass Effect (meaning it blows) but the rest of it is just pure out awesome.

I just got "The Spy" a purple SMG (which goes great with my +36% SMG Damage from my class Mod) that fires explosive rounds (which proc all the time because of my spec.)

I love this game, I can't wait to play some more tonight,

Yeah, the best part of borderlands right now are the rediculous weapons. I got a shot gun that shoots rockets. Fuck yes!

Given a choice, get fallout 3, and for the love of god, get it for PC and mod the crap outta it.

Ugh... it's got squad play? :eek:rly:

Yeah, I'm entrenched firmly in the FUCK BORDERLANDS department.

Thanks assholes. I buy the fucking game last week for PC, find out I can't even play it at all until today and THEN I can't get it to go online at all.

Borderlands is fun as hell, but if you are only going to get one, get Fallout 3.

I really wish I had the bandwidth to play Borderlands multiplayer. What I've played of it at a friends was amazing, but since I'm stuck with dial-up, I'd have only the single player to comfort me :(

I've only had the PC version it while i have a ps3 i'm still feel iffy about playing with a gamepad. I've grown so comfortable with a mouse and keyboard cant think of playing anything else.

what are good mods are out there for fallout 3 when i acquire the goty edition to replace my copy? I tried Oblivion and that felt very flat

I have Fallout 3 on the PC, but I still play it with the 360 controller, I couldn't get used to playing WITH the keyboard and mouse.

I can't do FPS with console controllers, but then again, I prefer console controllers to keyboards for 3rd person games.

If you have to choose and want the "value of your money" I HIGHLY recommend Fallout 3 (like everyone else suggest)

you can play vanilla mode (no mods) then play DLC and then add mods (or add mods from the get go but I highly suggest that you play without them first to get a feel) the mods can go from simple like enhance graphics to totally change the game play (alter leveling system, raise level limits, add abilities, add weapons, and add new missions)

you can pretty much play this game over and and with mods and never feel the same from the previous play it is that awesome (my personal opinion) you will get a long play time from it.

Fallout 3 mods I use:

Fallout Overhaul Kit 2: Adds a whole bunch of new guns and other features to the game. It's currently still sorta in development though, and the current version (1.0RC) has a few annoying bugs, so you might want to wait a few weeks for the 1.1 patch to come out. Oh, and be warned, it's a 1.1 gig download.

Ultimate Perk Pack: Adds a whole bunch of new perks to the game, most are balanced, though there are a few overpowered ones too.

Weapon Mod Kits: Lets you add modifications to existing weapons. Silencers, scopes, extended magazines, autofire mechanisms, laser sights etc. It works with FOOK2 weapons too, as long as you download their compatibility patch.

There are also a few other mods I don't use, but have heard good things about:
Mart's Mutant Mod, or MMM for short, adds tons of enemies, making each encounter a massive epic battle. I don't use it personally because I don't think my rig can handle it.

Fallout Wanderer's Edition is something of a realism mod, which makes the game harder. Bullets do more damage to both you and enemies (which is realistic, one or two bullets should incapacitate someone), eating and drinking and sleeping are now required, ammo and meds are rarer etc.

Project Beauty revamps the appearances of in-game NPCs, making them look better. Not necessarily more beautiful, but more appropriate for a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Note that, currently, this mod is not compatible with FOOK, so if you don't want your game borking up you can only use one of the two.

Me too, but I used VATS more than anything in Fallout 3. I rarely treated it as an FPS.
Granted, for long range shots, VATS was almost required due to horrible ballistics with long range weapons, but in closed quarters (labs, caves, melee attackers) it was all Real-Time for me.

VATS was also great for making grenades useful. They'd take too long to explode if you used them real time, but in VATS you almost always got a direct hit.
