[Webcomic] Chainsaw Suit. A message from Kris Straub.

They may have removed it because when sharing a chainsawsuit strip on Facebook, the image centers on the middle panel and you see half of the first and third panel, and they wanted to preserve the part they found funny, not to steal from Kris. I know because I shared the very next comic on Facebook, then deleted the share because it looked all fucked up and ruined the joke. So he didn't get any attention that way either.

But I do agree with him. If only image sharing on Facebook didn't suck so much.

I'd go with that QP if they hadn't completely altered the text. Seems weird they changed itit.
I skimmed the comics themselves and just read the message. Yeah, that's stupid. It would've taken minimal effort to draw new "God and dude" art if they wanted a new punchline.

I don't think it's a problem with Facebook per se, it's a problem with people seeing something on the Net and appropriating it for their own purposes. Some guy thought it'd be okay to take Straub's work, change it a bit, and then show it to people.

I oughta share this new thing from Straub on Facebook, see how that goes.

When I saw it on facebook I wondered if it was his art. It was obviously edited into a more fitting religious message - the ending wasn't uplifting, and the middle text was strengthened to support christian culture.

The kicker is that this is not his audience. It got 14k shares because it was edited.

If it was posted as-is, it wouldn't have been shared nearly as much. If it was posted edited with attribution it wouldn't have been shared as much because the underlying comic doesn't fit their religious ideals.

So while I applaud Kris for asserting ownership (and I hope he filed the appropriate DMCA claims against facebook) he didn't lose anything that he would have otherwise had. Perhaps some of the people who would find the uplifting message interesting would also like his work - but for the most part his work, when it touches on religion, treats it negatively.

That's....that's a good point.

I must confess that there are a couple of the more SFW strips from Oglaf I've been tempted to share with friends but would strip the URL out of first. Purely for the sake of not incidentally sending people in my immediate social circles toward porn comics. I decided in the end if having to share it with a certain person would necessitate removing the credit, then it's not worth sharing with that person.

Saw the Straub post on Reddit, wasn't sure if it had actually been posted by Straub or someone else just reposted it (i.e., wasn't sure that username was actually Straub's). What I find more coincidental is that Straub poked fun at the Oatmeal at one point, and the Oatmeal is dealing with the exact same sort of issue. It's not "justice" so much as "amusing."

As far as Oglaf goes, I don't see it as porn. All the titillation is completely ancillary to the funnehs. It is unquestionably vulgar, though.
