City Exploration

So, after playing Prototype and Assassin's Creed, I wondered something:

Do you think it'd be possible to make a sandbox city exploration game where it's an exact replica of a real city you can explore? It'd be more of an educational title, but I think it might be kind of fun. You could have the street names, key landmarks (statues, even), etc.

It might be handy for people who like to travel or want to go there but can't (or can't, yet). Toronto is a fun city to explore, but I'm bias because I live there. Paris could be neat.

It might even work well as an MMO, allowing people to explore together. Hrm, this is starting to sound like a "why not just go there in real life?"

Thoughts?

GTA and Spider-Man 2 are close to this. And that sort of thing is my favorite thing about them.I would be interested in something like that.

I've wanted a game like this in a zombie survival game for a while. I've always thought that having an exact replica of my town here would be cool, you know? It would be cool if you could actually decide what building to hide in and how to fortify it.

That sounds a bit like Fort Zombie, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Vette for the Mac was the first time I played a game with some semblance of real city exploration. Since we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, driving around in a wire-frame San Francisco was fun, even though we had no objectives other than time-killing. It had an accurate street map, but no real life buildings, just generic blocks.

Test Drive Unlimited tried to recreate Oahu pretty well, though I'm not familiar with their street map authenticity, with the exception of the Waikiki to airport run.

Part of what makes those kinds of games fun for me is also being able to explore it with the particular mechanic the game allows. I love being able to leap between rooftops in assassin's creed, but it wouldn't be so interesting if I had to explore the city in nothing but the walking mode. I think it would be a good idea to have some kind of open source system where scene files of existing cities are kept up to date and game makers can pull them off to do whatever they'd like with them. So you can have different companies working on different kinds of gameplay for those cities rather than just one game that only allows you to walk/drive around.

How long until controversy erupts over a FPS game set in an exact replica of some high school? Or a driving game where you can run over people on, say, Pennsylvania Avenue, just outside the White House?

A purely exploratory game would be interesting though.

Happened not long ago, some kid made a css map of his school, was suspended, police were called, cant find the details though.

I believe there was also controversy when Resistance made maps based on real locations in Europe. I don't believe the complainers ever gained any significant support though.

Apparently the LA Noir or whatever that game is called is going to be one of the most faithful block by block adaptation of a city in game.

I really wish I could have an Assassin's Creed style game set n the Chi...

Was that the game that pissed off the Roman Catholic Church for having a firefight take place in some famous cathedral?
