City of Heroes.... Issue 16??? wow

It has been a while since I played (I got a level 50 earth/medic controller) and level 50 D3 I think (Dark/Dark/DarK powers)
and around level 32 mastermind (robots)

I have no idea what are all the changes (seems a lot) I might have to start as level 1 to learn it all again ;)

With customization of powers and of course the expansion pack Super Science III (the other two looks ok) I might consider a reactivation (I play on Champion) since I still have 3 pre-paid time card unused.

I just need to find my CDs :(

no way!! ;) I need them. hehe I just talk with my wife. We might reactivate this weekend (maybe) or wait until issue 16 is out.

edit: (correction: it is out... I mean I want to make sure if I can buy Science pack III) bleh..
Friday.... brain shuts down for the weekend.

As a long time player, I'm actually kinda disappointed with I16. Masterminds aren't getting jack, as usual, except for the ability to re-color their Dark Blasts in Necromancy. The are continuing to strip each class of it's individuality via Power Set Proliferation. Worse, the two most useless sets (Super Strength and Martial Arts) are getting the ability to switch animations with new ones. How about about putting those resources into sets that are actually... you know, good?

The only thing that I'm actually looking forward to is Earth Assault, and that's just powers stripped from Stone Melee and enemy mobs like the Legacy Chain!

#5

Alex B.

I'm looking forward to creating a Radiation blaster!

Last issue introduced some pretty cool costume change emotes.

The Magic booster is pretty nifty. It gives you a special power to read other players' fortunes, giving them buffs. I grabbed the cyborg set (which was free with the architect edition, and the AE came with a free month, so I came out like $5 ahead), which includes a self-destruct button. :explode:

SeraRelm

SS was buffed, it's good.
MA is one of the best melee pools for PVP.

You don't know what you're talking about. :zoid:

#7

Chibibar

I don't PvP :) I love PvE.

Of course the last issue I played was like 9 I think.

#8

elph

I'm downloading the trial now. I've tried it before, but it just didn't grab me.

#9

Chibibar

I can tell you that until you get your FIRST travel power....... it is gonna suck (still 14 right?)

I mean running all over the place.... sucks.

I personally love flying (or fast hovering like me) and super speed. I TRY to master teleporting (but it is hard even with hot keys style) and super jump (I KEEP running INTO buildings)

#10

elph

Yeah, i don't think I'm going to get that far. I reconnected with one of my gaming buddies (soon to be getting back at a table to game! WOOT!) and he plays it. I just don't have the money to really maintain a monthly MMO, so in some way I hope it doesn't grab me again.

Well... it might... it might not :) give it a shot. There are lots of changes since I played. I might send some money from my main to my new level 1 character and give it a shot :)

of course 3 month until I hit 15 month for wings.......

You don't know what you're talking about. :zoid:
No... MA is one of the worst Melee pools. It has long animations, low damage, a commonly resisted damage type and only a single, weak form of control in it. Martial Arts has exactly ONE thing going for it: Low End usage. Let's look at the alternatives!

- Energy Melee: Good Damage from a less resisted damage type, with many of it's moves having stacking stuns. Fast animations too, except for Total Focus (or perhaps it's Energy Transfer? It's been awhile.)
- Dark Melee: Good Damage from a less resisted damage type. Includes a fast recharging heal, a Stam regenerator, and a good Fear attack, which is a hole in most defense sets. All attacks have an innate, stacking To-hit Debuff in them, which means you get hit less. Fast animations too, except for Shadow Maul.
- Broadsword: Great Damage for a Lethal set, though it can have end problems. All of it's attacks are hard hitting and have a natural To-hit Bonus. It lacks control, but your generally going to kill people with this long before you need to worry about them getting away.
- Spines: Nice damage for a lethal set, with bonus toxic damage. Lots of ranged moves for a Melee set, including some with control/anti-flight abilities. All attacks (Ripper) have a - Speed, - Recharge effect on them, which helps manage + Recharge builds in enemies.

So as you can see... MA is clearly the bottom rung of the ladder, with it only MAYBE beating Fire Melee.

In PvP? I doubt that. In all my years playing CoX, I have never seen a Fire Melee so much as step foot into a PvP zone. They seem to know better.

Now if your talking PvE, then yeah... Fire Melee is perfectly fine.

#15

SeraRelm

I think I know a little about PVP in the game considering the crowd I hang out with.

MA is good in PVP because of the resistance regulating that's been going on, also it has several forms of control in it, not a "single, weak form".

Thunder Kick (disorient)
Crane Kick (knock back)
Crippling Axe Kick (immobilize/slow/knock out of the air)
Eagles Claw (disorient)

Looks like four forms of control to me. Stack on to that the fact that it doesn't have a slow animation speed (no clue where you're getting that) and how two of it's attacks have a higher crit chance than most others and it looks like you're talking out of your ass. I'm not Saying Energy Melee is bad, it's good with it's disorients and less common resistible (though it's also smashing damage mind you) and Spines is pretty much making you a blaster, but MA is not weak. PVE it's mediocre, but not in PVP.

Broadsword we won't even go into. It's broken. Toe to toe, no one is going to beat a broadsword/regen who is built right.

Edit: Fire/fire makes me sad for all the fire tanks who got bent over in a much earlier issue.

Ah, I thought you just meant in general. Nah, ANY melee I found to be lacking in PvP... I found the best thing I could do there was kite guys with my mercs mastermind :p

They've actually done a lot to mitigate that. There are plenty of temporary travel powers available at the lower levels, mostly through the safeguard missions. Just do a bank robbery before you hit 10th and you get a free jet pack that'll last you until you hit 14. They've also increased the speed of hover to be about as fast as sprint, so it'll work in a pinch if you need it.

Add onto that the Pocket D and Supergroup Base Teleporter powers that are available, and you can get around pretty easily.

I used to always pick up a travel power at 14, but I've got an archer around 19 now and he still doesn't have one. I don't feel like you have to any more.

Heh.. I don't mind not going "as fast" as some people anymore. After Issue 7 or 8 I didn't play with many people cause some were just for Hami so I drop flight and stick with hover with 3 +speed slot.

Since you don't get negative while you hover and you can get anywhere with it :) also most of the time in groups, you get summon anyways.
hover is probably my favorite power. I forgot about Pocket D.

If you play your cards right, you can get to level 24 (the maximum level I'd recommend getting your main travel) without getting your Travel, Villain Side, for free.

5-9: Mayheam in Port Oaks for Raptor Pack
10-14: Mayheam in Cap Au Diable for Jump Pack
15-19: Marshal Brass Mission "Steal Goldbricker Jetpack"
20-24: Sky Raider Contact Mission where you have to defend their base. Click one of the glowing crates.

In all you'll get around 4-5 Hours of flight time and 2 of Super Jump. More than enough to get to 24. You can always buy 1 hour flight packs in Grandville as well.

see.. those are kinds of changes I miss out ;) I remember when CoH first came out, everyone gun for travel power at 14 since these options are not available before.

Not so much anymore. The current most popular farming missions (Hamidon Mito farms) are getting banned the second they get reported. A mission you can't lose unless you get tired of doing it is NOT what the Developers had in mind for the AE. They just aren't waving around the account ban stick anymore... they are just taking away your publishing slots if you make one.

And really, it's not like you couldn't do the same thing in Grandville or Peregrine Island before the AE hit anyway. It was slower I'll grant you, but it was basically the same thing.

Kheldians? No thanks. Cannot get interested enough to level one past 15 or so. Although I was thinking of doing a human-only build at one point.

I have one, but not sure how far I got her.

Dayum. Too bad I lost interest in the game, because those additions sound great. But it's not enough to get me to start playing again, sadly.

#30

Dusty668

Don't forget villain side you can buy a jetpack in grandville as early as level 1 for 10,000inf. The hardest part there is getting across cap au diable if you don't have a grandville VG porter. Otherwise north from the ferry down the mall to the big square, NE corner look for 'Jetpack Vendor' behind the Arbiter. If you need a loan, hollar @talviar.

I really wish CoH could grab me for more than a week. Everytime I hop into it, by the end of the week I'm playing TF2/WoW for the good part of the day again. :bush:

With Fallout 3 currently grabbing me by the short hairs again, Dragon Quest 8 recently purchased (my dog killed my PS2 though *sigh*) and Aion Online just a couple of months away, I just can't see it happening.

Though mighty impressed by people like Sera and Zen who've kept their accounts so active over such a long period of time.

#32

Bowielee

Bowielee

I absolutely loved CoH/V for about 30 levels, when I had a supergroup that was really active and we had a really fraternal thing going on. Every time I've tried playing it since WoW came out, it just seems like there's very little variety in it.

Still has the best character customization of any game I've played, though. I was very easily able to make analogues of the characters I've created over the years.

#33

Chibibar

I just reactivated. MAN I forgot how slow controller levels :( (working on earth/kinetics) it is painful ;) (level 9 now) but it is worth it when I get higher.

I do have a Dark Shade (the dark kleidian) level 12... she is ok, but not as much fun as I though. I probably gonna work on a villain to 50 to unlock the epic character on that side with my Tech Mastermind robot/forcefield (typical build)

#34

Bowielee

Bowielee

I had an illusion controller. I stopped playing about the time where they nerfed phantasms so you could only have one active at a time.

Addendum:
I know I've harped on it before, but it's really the whole mission structure that bores me to tears. I like the control scheme and the customization and playing with the powersets.

If you haven't played it, imagine playing WoW and your favorite instances are the Scarlet Monestary instances (my personal Favorites). Now imagine that every other quest you were given required you to go Scarlet Monestary for every single mission for 50 levels.

I've been basically inviting anyone who comes to Virtue villian side to the Wraith Spiders, the group I'm basically an officer in. However, it's an RP group for Arachnos characters, which doesn't fit everyone's play style or needs, and we've been being stricter about recruiting lately.

If we get a bunch of people, then go ahead and make a VG. I have some guys I can stick in it. If not, look for a good one... I don't know any non-RP ones I'm afraid.

I do RP. The hard part if there is "time requirement" since I also play on Champion server (got level 50 there unlocks and stuff) I will not join a guild that has "time requirement" i.e. must play with guildies X hours a week etc etc.

Mostly Infinity and Virtue these days, on both sides. I'm @RooGirl and I'm often hidden so just send me a message anyway. Until August 2 mostly my MMO time goes to recruit-a-friend WoW with Mr. ZM but I'm on occasionally, and will be a lot more after that.

I'd throw an alt in a SG or VG even though these things never really pan out.

We'll see how that rolls. Got both to level 4 now (more or less) but if this doesn't take off I can go back to Champion and play my level 50 and work on my villain there (upto like 20+ and my d3 she is 33)

I let my subscription lapse because AE has sucked the life out of the game. It has attracted a younger, less literate crowd, too. The older crowd was one of the attractions for me, and now that seems to have disappeared. I really don't understand the appeal of powerleveling to 50 in AE whacking inanimate bubbles.

Architect Entertainment. It's the user-built mission system. There are quite a few missions designed solely to collect xp or architect tickets (which I still don't quite get the value of--nothing at the vendor seems really worth it).

You absolutely don't need a team for the levels you'll be playing at in the trial. I would say spend your time making alts, trying different powersets, seeing what appeals, checking out the maps, etc.

Also, I totally agree with fade about AE. I might make a mission (did in beta and would like to so more) or play ones done by friends, but AE really changed the culture of the game very quickly, and I don't think it's going to change back.

But that's fine, I just I play the game as if AE doesn't exist.

Well I am aware that I can solo most of the low-level content (I'm level 8 now) its just a matter of wanting to meet some of the people in the game. Or trying to team up with one of you lot, if there's anyone at my level.

But yeah, the closest I have come to dying yet with my WP / Ice tank was when I accidently aggro'd twelve mobs that were equal level as me. That's it.

Most of the time on missions I can take on as many as I want, while only having to take Endurance into account. My health never drops below half.

Can I make a mission in AE on a Trial account?

#58

If there are two things that need to be nerfed in that game, it's willpower/anything or anything/willpower and fire/fire dominators. I haven't been able to not solo anything despite the low HP as a fire/fire dominator. Half the time I'm in a group, I take down the bulk of the mobs.

Alex B.

My SG played around with AE right after it came out, and several of us created some good arcs. I made one that turned out to be exactly long enough for our usual Tuesay night session and it was a blast. I don't have the arc # handy, but if you've got a really good regular team to take through it, it's called "Politbura Amok" (I ramped up the difficulty after my controller was able to solo it). Mostly it was just really awesome to play alongside one of my own heroes. :toocool:

But, yeah, the novelty wore off for me after that. I haven't really messed with it since.
