From the promos thus far it looks fantastic. And I cannot wait to test the new engine.

I'm still iffy about it. If a demo ever drops, I'll check that out, first.

No vacation time, so no I probably won't get it on drop day. Maybe around christmas time. I am insanely interested, but I also have too many other things going on for it to be a good idea to start Civ 5 any time soon.

I am getting sad with this release. This will be the second Civ game that I did not buy the week that it came out. As I've said before, I did not get IV at all. I guess it is the 3rd really I did not get the new Colonization either.

the new colonization sucks anyway. But missing CIV IV altogether? Man, you have no idea what you missed.

Sigh.Time to write letters to the Girlfriend and Friends.I'll be gone for a long while if it will be as good as I hope it will be.

They won't be releasing a Mac version for a while and my PC is at home. I'm trying to do well this semester so perhaps it's for the best. Yeah, no problem at all. I can handle this.

Ok, got the game off Steam because the local retailers are retards (Am I allowed to say retard or is it too soon?)

Anyways, graphics are great, game is a little slow to get moving but there's some really nice touches including:

Only an hour in, enjoying it. Not doing backflips yet, but enjoying it.

All the simple details are there as well. I love how my archers shoot volleys of regular arrows at units on the battlefield but shoot flaming arrows at the cities and set buildings on fire.

And I love the hex screen with graphics turned off. I could play that way all the time.

They fixed one of my biggest pet peeves from Civ IV regarding Barbarians! YAY!



Oooooh HCGLNS, ME TOO! Wow, and it lets me play the game without nearly the stuttering that having a not-so-great computer has on the regular setting... Purty!

I loved it for the couple of hours I played it. Now I'll have to download it and install it...again.

Just played the demo, which let me play 100 rounds.

I kind of like it. Though, it feels more slow-paced than Civ IV. It feels like it takes forever just to build anything. But, I do like some of the changes, like the city states and, most importantly, allowing my archers to shoot stuff from far away. Now, they're not just sitting ducks, waiting to be picked upon by giant, stacked armies. I also like the change in civics, which seem to give you better bonuses.

Maybe it's just me, but I actually liked the religions aspect of Civ IV. I liked saying no to other civilizations because they were heathen bastards.

Unfortunately, my laptop is just not a very good gaming computer. Everything is slow as hell for me. It wouldn't even let me skip the opening cinematic right away. I hit every frigging button and it kept playing. Then again, my hatred for useless cutscenes in games is starting to grow and grow. In a game like this, an opening cinematic is pointless and useless.

Then again, I had to cut down on a number of things to speed up my gameplay some in other games. Civ IV, for example, I cut down a lot of the extra features to speed up the game, like videos (every bloody time you discover a new religion or create a new wonder, which gets annoying after awhile) and attack animations. From what I can tell (unless there's more options in the full game), they don't give you those options here.

If I had a better gaming rig, I'd probably get it. For now, I think I'll just stick with Civ IV.

Anyone else noticed how Liberty and Freedom are 2 different policies... weird.

Wouldn't Equality or Human Rights work instead of Freedom?

So far the hardest thing for me to become accustomed to is the hex tiles. Strange.

I think not being able to stack units after 20 years of playing these games will be weird for me.

I just like Liberty better...

Went to Gamestop on the 21st and was told very knowingly and assuredly by the gal working there that Civ V did NOT come out until Wednesday, the 22nd. In fact, she got an email on it. Well...an EMAIL. That convinced me. Strange...I went home and downloaded it from Steam. Very strange. <end sarcasm> Unless it's Wow: XPAC HEAVEN Gamestop likes to urinate on PC gamers. I'm retroactively surprised they had Starcraft 2 when I went to get it.

As to the game...I don't think there will ever be a way to take the tedium out of mid to late game when you have a ton of units/workers running around. That still makes me <sigh> at times. And I'm enough of a nitpicker to not want to just put my workers on Autopilot. The hex tiles don't bother me in the least, in fact I don't even notice it. It does seem "simpler" than Civ IV, and easier to manage everything. I do like the combat without stacking tiles. It seems more mini-Total War-ish to me. Bombard with your air/naval might. Get your foot and cavalry up front, line up your ranged behind and have at it.

In general, another high powered vacuum of time suck.

What truly made Civ V for me was when I stopped playing it and realized that it was past bedtime and I still had a lot of housework left to do on Tuesday night. It's that coming out of a stupor feeling, that only Civ can give.

Oh sweet Jebus, I just realized how awesome this game would be on a tablet.

So after playing for a while I already have a suggestion for the first patch: find a way to keep units set to "Explore" from wandering into city states and causing a diplomatic incident. It's getting QUITE annoying.

However, I found an issue I DON'T want them to fix. You probably noticed that wonders now appear in a random surrounding tile rather than inside the city itself. Which in one of my playthroughs led to this:



Alas, another Civ finished the Pyramids first, so the Great Underwater Pyramids of Orleans were lost.

Ranged units are limited by terrain! Awesome!

the AI is even dumber than in CIV4. they're terrible at warfare to the point of the game losing its appeal.

What difficulty levels are you experiencing this at?

i play King or emperor.

on the civfanatics forums, that's the biggest complaint as well
