Diet Soda Makes You Fat and an Addict

http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/03/01/diet.soda.health/index.html?hpt=T2#

I can agree to ALOT that article has to say. I find ALOT of correlations to my Diet Soda habit and the points that they raise in it.

Personally I have about 40-60 oz of Diet Soda a day, which is more than when I drank regular soda. My poisons of choice are Cherry Coke Zero, Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper, Coke Zero, Pepsi Max, Diet Dr. Pepper, and Diet Sunkist

Damn dude. Thats a hell of a lot of diet soda. How much water do you drink a day?

#10

Jiarn

Probably around 10-20 oz of water... I know I really need to flip those....

I used to think I drank too much Coke Zero when I had a second one in a day. Damn...

Hmm I think my mother is a Diet Coke junkie. She drinks tons of it and actually prefers it to water which is bizarre to me. As I have stated before I LOVE water. I definitely prefer water to soda.

My mom quite literally drinks nothing but diet pepsi. No water, no anything else, just pure diet pepsi.

Holy shit!! I drink 1 can of soda every week (saturday nights) and I'll never try those "alternative" sugars drinks. I drink about 4-5 bottles of water a day. I'm on the road 2-3 days a week, when I eat out. I drink bottled water or occasional some orange juice (depending on brand).

I know it's not my business but people seriously... water isn't going to kill you.

#19

I average 2-4 cans of Coke Zero a day, not really a concern except for the money drain they are, might quit if I need the extra cash.

#20

I use to drink several coke zeros per day until I heard the crack of a whip and my girlfriend kindly asked me to switch to tea or water.

Coke Zero is definitely better than Diet Coke.

You guys make me feel better about the can or two of soda I have in a week.

#23

Espy

Yeah, I don't drink much soda, but when I do? Damn son. I'm getting some nasty burritos at Taco Bell and some kind of ridiculously huge Mountain Dew that comes in a bucket size.

I used to drink energy drinks until I figured out that they are 99% sugar and calories. Now if I need a quick pick me up and I'm not in the mood for coffee (my real poison) I grab a one of the small sugar free red bull shots. It's got basically nothing in it and gives you about as much caffeine as a 6oz cup of joe.

I don't drink diet soda and I have given up drinking regular soda, which I used to drink a lot of. I take 2 or 3 bottles of water to work with me every night. At home I drink coffee, milk, or juice.

Not drinking diet soda wasn't a health related concern, though - I just dislike the taste of artificial sweeteners.

Yes. Also: 24 ounces of terrible aspertine taste! Wooooooo! :p

Seriously though here's the way I look at it: I could drink a giant gross fakey diet drink like that but I'm doing it for 2 reasons right?
1) I want some caffeine because I got shit to do.
2) I want something to sip on.

If I drink that monstrosity up there? I get some caffeine but Im drinking a giant gross fake tasting energy drink. So if I'm not up for more coffee I hit the 5 hour energy shot (I prefer the sugar free red bull) that has a fraction of the crap as that big thing there and grab some water or tea. Then you get to sip and you get your caffeine.
I mean do what you gotta do man but since I cut out all the pop and energy drinks and started drinking lots more water I've lost weight and gotten a bit healthier.

#36

Jiarn

I actually like the taste..... I used to be a Sugarfree Red Bull junkie till I moved on to this....

Like I said, if you like it go for it, personally I think almost all the sugar free stuff tastes terrible, but if it's in place of what your body needs you're going to suffer.

Of all the energy drinks I've tried, the 5 Hour Energy shots are the only ones that, for me, weren't completely useless. The more B-vitamin complexes, the better (or so I've heard).

Every time I see or hear one of their ads, I want to beat that announcer to death with a coffee maker. I mean how stupid do they think we are? Coffee is FOOD. Their shit isn't, and doesn't even try to be.

It's beyond time that Coffee sends the Starbucks boys 'round to 5 Hour Energy's place to break his legs for trying to muscle in on Coffee's territory.

#40

Wasabi Poptart

Coffee chooses to ignore 5 Hour Energy because Coffee knows it is superior without having to resort to drastic measures.

#41

drifter

I've never seen the 5 Hour commercials. All I know is caffeine doesn't help me when I need it the most, and the few times I've tried mega-doses of caffeine have had dire effects on the ol' GI tract.

And besides, tea is clearly the superior beverage choice.

#42

Wasabi Poptart

I love coffee in my tea. There was a place I used to go to back in southern NJ (Cooks Corner in Smithville for anyone local) that made a drink called a chai charger. It was a chai tea latte with a shot of espresso in it. Holy heart palpitations was it goooood!

I've thought for a long time that some people who rely on caffeine constantly might be energized by the ritual of drinking it more than the caffeine itself. Hell, at my university, there were 4-5 cafes on campus alone, and they were always packed. They make it available, and they make it seem like something that students have to have to get by. It's fun to joke about it with friends and on facebook. "Gotta charge up for midterms, etc. etc." It's something to do to get ourselves mentally ready to be productive...... not that I have any proof that I'm not completely full of shit. Just thinkin' out loud.

As I've become very accustomed to the taste of Sugarfree Redbull and Monster Zero I find that the reason I don't drink the 5hr Shots, is that I actually miss the taste/feel/drinking of the energy drinks. Reason I switched to the Monster was because it was bigger than the Redbull and therefore the "ritual" lasted longer.

You smoke and you drink energy drinks on a regular basis, along with diet sodas?

You reek of someone who needs more sleep, diet, and exercise.

#50

Jiarn

My energy drinks are zero calorie, zero sugar. My diet drinks are the same. I'm switching from cigarettes to electronic.

I'm at my ideal body weight, slightly over my body fat requirement, and have fantastic stamina.

I also sleep 6 1/2hrs a night, eat very healthy and work out 4 days a week. -grin-

I may or may not have Lupus though....

Tell us more. How many fruits and vegetables a day do you eat? What % milk do you drink? What is your opinion on whole wheat bread?

About 2-3 servings of veggies a day, almost no fruit though. I drink 2% reduced fat milk, I also exclusively use Whole Wheat Breads and pastas.

#53

What is your opinion on eating tuna? Should Omega-3 be in everyone's diet?

#54

Jiarn

Personally I like tuna with a good Spanish salsa vs mayonaise, but mostly because I'm anti-Mayo for the most part. I'll usually have that mix with some un-salted tortilla chips from our local shop.

Omega-3? Don't you mean Omega-13? I dunno about eating that, it's pretty huge...

#55

Jay

Jay

What kind of mayo do you recommend? Also, what would you rather eat? Prosciutto or Soppresata? Why?

#56

Jiarn

I don't make it a habit to recommend Mayo period.

Prosciutto, only because I haven't had Soppresata before. Not due to lack of want, but more lack of experience.

Well to be "soda" it has to be carbonated, but as far as the addiction goes, it's either caffeine or artificial sweetener causing it. Flavored waters could have both, but don't always have either.

#72

makare

Yeah I meant the carbonated ones. They don't have caffeine and they are sweetened with splenda.

Hee hee hee, I'm loving that new meme. Actually... can someone make me one that says "Don't drink Coke, drink water." Or something like that? I'm a self-proclaimed Coke (notice the capital 'C', folks) addict, because I dislike tea and coffee but still need my caffeine fix every morning and during the day. But I'd like to move away from it.

And no, diet sodas don't work for me. Call me strange, but the aftertaste for instance in Coca-Cola Zero and Diet Coke must be what a cat's ass must taste like. And that's a bad thing. You pervert.

I used to drink about 2 liters of Mountain Dew every day as an undergrad. I still can't believe that I didn't go into a diabetic coma. Now, it's almost all coffee, green tea, and water. I have the occasional soda; I'd guess once or twice every 2 weeks. It took me some time to get over drinking water with my meals instead of soda. Soda and mexican food just belong together.

Hardly drink pop at all anymore. Maybe once a month or so? I drink a crap load of coffee though, so I won't pretend to be healthier than thou.
I drink a couple glasses of water a day, and one or two teas as well.

I was warned against Diet soft drinks when I was around 10 or 11. I had these blood and urine tests done but they didn't tell me I was supposed to fast beforehand, and so I drank a huge pop to make me pee. When my results came in, my triglycerides were more than double the expected amount. I was warned not to drink diet pops or chew sugar free gum, because aspertame is twice as bad for your triglycerides.

(Then we found out I was supposed to have fasted beforehand, we redid the tests and it turned out I was healthy.)

It will cause diarrhea if you take it excessively. Admittedly this would take around 20 cups* of orange juice worth of vitamin C, though. And it is NEVER safe to promote anything as a cure for an illness when it is in fact not a cure.
