So, some of you might remember a couple of months ago I posted about finally getting a job. It's as a stockboy at a certain megacorporate superstore, but it was a job nonetheless, and I was grateful.

Well, I'm still grateful, for the paycheck at least, but holy hell do I hate my job.

I'm currently having disciplinary action taken against me for failing to show up to work, even though I called ahead of time to let them know I wouldn't be in because I was having minor surgery performed on my foot. On both days that I missed, I called ahead of time, and talked to a manager, who told me that my absence would be recorded. It wasn't, hence the disciplinary action now.

It's not at all a friendly work environment.

So, how about anyone else. Hate your job? Love it? Feel ambivalent but want to vote anyway? Go right ahead.

I'm sorry to hear about the crap going on at your job. I hope it gets resolved without too much trouble for you.

As for me, I traded monetary success for happiness. I love my job, even though the paycheck isn't great. I'm guessing most people have to choose between a high salary and happiness at work.

What I have learn with any non-mom and pop type store is that you need everything in writing!!! email, anything regarding these issues.

Calling it in is not going to work your boss seems to "forget" and now you are taking the heat.

As for my job? I love it. It is a pretty easy type job. Sure it gets pretty hectic when servers goes down and we need to bring it back up, but that is rare now with all the upgrades and monitoring system we have on it and even BACK ups... woot! Pay is good for a community college work, hours are good (plus all the free extra holidays) getting paid once a month sucks, but you get use to it.

My boss is awesome. Even if I get a verbal agreement on time off, we always write it down and I send him official email and he will reply. This way, if he forgets, I got an email (work email not personal) that you are covered.

I get payed to work as many hours a week as I damn well please, despite doing about 5 hours of actual work during our slow times (20 hours a week during out busy times.)
The rest I browse the internet at my leisure at 10.50 an hour, or during the school year I get to do my homework.

Working for the school is fucking awesome, Monday we're going to start experimenting with tele-commuting.

The job pays well, and I like the people I work with. There are aspects of the job that I don't like (information gathering from other depts is like pulling teeth, I'm viewed by some groups as something akin to a KGB agent (I show up when someone has screwed up and I need to find out what happened, why they thought unplugging a server in the middle of a production day was a smart idea, Etc.) and there are times I feel like I'm being lied to by the groups to protect their own). I don't feel like I'm getting enough support from my bosses to support my projects and everyone I'm supposed to be working with are overworked with thier own projects that they point me to another person who does likewise.

I enjoy my job when I have an A-ha momemnt and figure out something that no one else has thought of or I force peoples hands enough to do something and it ends up being the ultimate fix to a problem. I could probably count on one hand the number of times that has happened in the year I have been there.

All in all I don't bounce out of bed in the morning saying "it's work time" but I doubt anyone does and I'm content enough to not be looking for something else to do ATM.

I love my job. I adore the people I work with for the most part- if I could get rid of the one guy on our shift I call the Torpedo Weasel, it would be freaking perfect. Well, not exactly perfect, because I am a civil servant and I have to deal with John and Joanne Q Public, and sometimes John and Joanne Q Public can be real dunderheads, but it just is what it is and I deal with those bits and enjoy the bits when I do make a difference.

For the most part, I actually love my job. on days like yesterday though, I friggin' hate it.
I work for a sales company going door to door selling driveway sealing, and also sealing said driveways. I make commission with no hourly rate.

Yesterday I didn't sell a single driveway in my entire 14hour shift. My boss told me to take today off. Selling less than 6 on a Saturday is pretty terrible. Selling 0 is like... Oh, god, you suck. I had a good week up till Thursday, too. I'm just exhausted from working 14hour shifts 7 days in a row, especially when I have to ride my bike in for an hour to get to work.

While you are correct, if you are sick and went to the doctor, at least you can get a doctor's note (I need to get those sometimes. Since the OP talks about surgery I'm sure he can get a note from the doctor (it is a form note anyways) and thus he wouldn't have any issue of being sick. I guess the best bet is talk with HR to find out the corporate procedure and follow that.

Next time you might want to look into jumping through the hoops to make sure you're covered under FMLA

You're entitled to take leave, by law, for serious medical care. Surgery sounds serious.

While you are correct, if you are sick and went to the doctor, at least you can get a doctor's note (I need to get those sometimes. Agreed actually my last job said that we couldn't call in sick without a doctors note (it was a job at a pizza place, which paid minimum wage). Essentially one of the stupidest things ever because doctors visit cost around 100$ assuming you don't have insurance, and if you are working at this peice of crap usually you don't.

It was minor surgery, I had to have an ingrown toenail removed. I did have full documentation on it, and did follow company policy in reporting my absence well before my shift on both days that I missed. The disciplinary comes from the fact that instead of calling a specific number to report (that I didn't know about) I instead called the store directly, and spoke with two seperate managers who said they'd report it. They both forgot.

In the end, even though they messed up, it was decided that the fault started when I called the wrong number.

Joke's on them, though. Making me feel so unappreciated is really hurting my productivity.

I came to dislike my job as web builder for awhile at the start of this year. My boss started out really enthusiastically on some websites that we're building for our company(an insurance company), and then later on, he hired someone else to do a website for selling clothing. Weird, I know, but well, he's an entrepeneur. All fine and well, but for the past few months, it has basically reached the point where he showed very little interest in my projects and websites, and was completely focusing on the other site. Basically, it came to the point where I'd be able to figure out something cool for the company's website, and his only response would be "How can we use this for <clothing website>", which really irked me.

However, I managed to solve this hurdle by becoming more of a freelancer. Now I'm helping someone out a Danish friend of mine with a website, and rebuilding an existing application into a web application for another company. The first job will be very good for my savings accounts and introduced me to Drupal. The other job has me figuring out some awesome AJAX/javascripting along the way, and the company has offered to buy me a car. And I'm still receiving my original wage from the insurance company by working on new features and maintaining the websites.

All that, and I still have time to study and develop things for an eventual step into indie gaming.

It's been a bit hectic for the past few weeks, but I couldn't be happier. Moved into a new house at the start of this year, so my savings account is very happy to get as much money as it can, and I'm beginning to learn some new things again. A breath of fresh air after all the monotomy that I got into.

I love all my coworkers (with the exception of one entitled, hypocritical, stoner, stupid, constantly-undergoing-an-anxiety-attack bitch), and--on the good days--it's basically standing around and talking about video games to people. There are a few customers I love talking to, and I take pride in the fact that there are a couple customers I see on a regular basis who will buy a game solely on my reccomendation.

On the other hand, I hate the corporate aspects of it. Even the assistant managers make close to minimum wage. This wouldn't be so bad, except that we're expected to: pitch pre-orders and magazine subscriptions (the minimum goals are supposed to be 2 each per shift), push trade-ins and current promotions, push extended warranties on games, extended warranties on systems, and try to get as many people as possible to take a customer service survey online, and we're supposed to hit all of these in every transaction.

Oh, we're also not paid on any form of commission. And the only compensation we get are e-mails from our district manager saying, "Great job, guys! You're really helping the company!"

During the holiday season last year I was on a conference call, and the district manager's motivational speech was basically, "I know the economy's bad, but our company's actually INCREASING sales. If you guys meet this level of performance, I can guarantee you'll all keep your jobs."

I'm currently working at a private sports club and a public sports club.

The former is the 'worse' of the two, but they're both pretty easy jobs and have flexible hours while I take my courses to become a paramedic. In about a year I'll finally be able to be an EMT, which will be a nice change of pace and, it seems, an immense amount of stress.

I love my job. The thing I love most is I get to figure and do all the intellectual input towards projects without having to do the grunt work for results. It's pretty much like grad school except I have my minions do all the hard labor! Well that and it's like running a mini-business. I get paid well, I ALWAYS get the weekends off, work about 6-7 hours a day, and I have a nice corner office where I can watch the squirrels outside be merry. The only part I don't enjoy is dealing with my whiny lab techs issues with each other. I report to three suits from corporate ahead of me, so I'm pretty much master of my domain. My commute is kinda far, but I get to ride the train the whole time which allows me to finish up things on the ol' laptop and have time to spend with the rugrats and wife.

Granted I've only been doing it for about three months, but I loves it and can definitely see myself doing this for 30+ years.

I don't really have a job per se, but I've been doing freelance yardwork for several years now for my relatives or their coworkers.

Currently I'm only doing it for my aunt and one of her coworkers, so I only work for a few hours one day every two weeks. I could really stand to find more clients so I get more income, or find a full-time job.

My aunt's coworker is kinda flaky on billing days, though. I suppose it doesn't matter so long as I get it the next week... but it's just, dammit lady, I just spent the last hour getting rained on by spiders trying to trim the hedges in the narrow space between the house and the garden wall. I want my damn money :explode:

Not great, but not terrible either. It's really easy--make calls, answer the same questions every day, check email, etc. etc. My other job--desk assistant--is even easier. I don't have to do any work at all unless there's a package at the desk or if someone loses their key. My job is basically to make sure drifters don't come in and sleep in the lobby. I have not always accomplished this task. (It was COLD, and she was an unarmed lady. Sue me!)

I love the freedom. Like Chazwozel, I like that I can assign the more menial tasks to grad students. I do love the lack of a clock or a direct "boss". I am beholden to a lot of people, and I have to do my work or suffer, but no one cares if I don't show up one day or if I leave 2 hours early. As long as I'm getting work done.

The pay sucks, too, considering that if I went into petroleum directly, I would start at about twice my current salary. My Masters students graduate with signed contracts that shame my salary. But I knew long ago that was the price you pay for a university job.

I hate that this university doesn't care about itself. The university looks like utter crap aesthetically. The new president promised to change that, but failed almost immediately due to state budget cuts. It's clear, too which departments get favored. We have the first official computer science department in the country (and one of the top 5 still), and those buildings are gorgeous. They don't even mow half the time. The student body is a direct analogy. They just don't care. They want to do the bare minimum. I mean, (again, sorry CajunGal) it seems to be a problem in this whole area. People just seem to be annoyed when you make them do their job. I've gotten it from many, many clerks now.

Oh, and the town is great for tourists. There's cultural stuff, Cajun stuff, what have you. But living here is rather boring. I had a friend from Scotland (who moved back) who summed it up nicely. He said, "It's like one giant suburb." So true. Nothing to do outdoors unless you like swamp and mosquitos. And my coworkers are all older than me, so making friends hasn't really happened either. I hit it off with some grad students, but I have to stay distant.

None taken. You're at ULL, right? I hated it there. Of course, I don't like LSU much either. But at least it's pretty here.

Lafayette's a pretty quiet place. I liked the Lafayette I grew up in better... no River Ranch neighborhood.

I love my job, however it is simultaneously maddening and exhilarating. I am a marketing specialist for a large Credit Union in BC. Part of my job is to understand how people spend money and to find products or services that appeal to the public enough that they don't want to switch service providers. This means I get to sit down with accountants, the public, the board of directors, the senior management team, the rest of the marketing department and various stakeholders, and come up with the best solution for all parties. Unfortunately, because of this exposure, I'm labelled with 'products expert' - if there's a problem anywhere along the line with something (technical, operational, procedural, educational), it gets dumped on me to fix.

Because I report to the VP of Marketing, I also get tasked with a lot of strategic work such as where should we build our next branch, what's our target demographic and how are we going to address it. I'm directly responsible for the research side of the business - economic reporting and analysis, statistics, member analytics, etc.

On top of the nerd stuff, because I'm in the marketing department and have experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, I'm often responsible for putting collateral together. Billboards, posters, radio ads, video - all creative stuff requiring the other half of my brain. Sometimes I'm working both sides at the same time - coming up with the product itself and then trying to create the bows and ribbons around it.

If my job entailed just the nerd side, or just the creative side I'd probably go crazy, but because I get a good mix of both it keeps me a little more motivated to try new things. Plus I get a nice corner office on the second floor overlooking the river - that's a nice perk.

My job is pretty good. I'm a combination of accountant/administrator/manager/consultant, so I get to wear alot of hats. It keeps me busy without being crazy and I can study for my accounting degree while in the office.

The only complaint is with some of the military members. I get really pissed when they start whining "But we didn't do it that way on <big fancy base>. Why do we have to do it like that here?" :explode:

Fortunately, I have a good boss this year who backs me up when I have to start smacking uniforms.

My job's not anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be when I took it. I wouldn't say I love it, but I don't hate it by any means. I mean, it's retail, and there are a great many times when the store is sloooooow and I am bored out of my mind. That being said, my co-workers and managers all fall in the range of "insanely cool" to "entirely tolerable," which is a nice change from some of the better-paying office jobs I've had where my managers have been either disgruntled bitches or narcissistic assholes. I'm also pretty good at my job, so I do get a small amount of personal satisfaction from getting nice sales.
