Ebola Outbreak

Kidding aside, you guys up to speed what's going on in Liberia (West Africa)? They are currently affected by the worst Ebola outbreak ever. Over 1000 infections so far with a 60% mortality rate (usually 90%) due to being able to treat it quickly..... but not anymore. 660 dead so far.

The top Ebola doctor is now infected by it and the place is going out of control. Within weeks, chaos may reign. Some airlines have stopped going there and NGO's are already evacuating....

Dense population + low education + high mortality rate and we've got a big problem on our hands.

If it gets to Nigeria (4th biggest city on this planet), the sky is the limit.

Ebola virus tends to be a lot like a flu, first few days you're not contagious, the next 3-10 days you are... they you either die or suffer very very much but wish you did.

Yes. That doctor has now died, I believe.
I'm sure the remaining Westboro folks are rubbing their hands together with glee.

Well, they better do so with hot water and soap.

What was crazy is that the family of Patient Zero, violently "rescued" her from the hospital.
She is dead now, but I bet most of her family and people involved are now infected.

I wonder how far surrounding countries will allow this to go before they prioritize the lives of their people over the lives of the starting country.

Way, way back in my undergrad years we had a seminar with the couple (Drs Jaax) that were involved in the book The Hot Zone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hot_Zone). Go read that book if you want to be freaked out even more. I can definitely see this get out of hand. I am sure there is a plan in place to deal with this, but I wonder if it will work. If someone infected makes it to Europe or North America then people will likely panic.

Now now, you know studies have already shown that there's no additional benefit if you heat the water.

And, it's worse to just rinse your hands without soap! B/c the bacteria/viruses on your hands are not easily removed by rinsing only. You need to lather up your hands well and then rinse your hands without scrubbing (how docs in the movies rinse their hands). Water alone just spreads the bacteria around your hands and gives them access to more food.

Fist bumps for everyone! http://www.bbc.com/news/health-28481957

Nigeria (4th biggest city on this planet),
wait, I'm really confused by this. Nigeria isn't a city. Isn't the 4th biggest anything I can find, and its largest city IS 17.5 Million people, which is really bad, but not near biggest in the world

The current estimates for Lagos has the population in the 20 million range, which would put it in the top 10. Of course these estimates are all over the place for these sprawling cities that are too disorganized to count.
