So this has been an MMO on my radar for a while now, but one I haven't been sure enough about to actually shell out 50 bucks for. If you don't know about it, it's a post-apocalyptic setting which is a welcome change to the hordes of fantasy MMOs out there, and seems to be more sandbox-style hopefully like UO with more of an emphasis on crafting compared to most modern MMOs which is also a welcome change to me.

If anyone else is interested maybe we can get some halforums grouping on. There's only one big server, like Eve, so you don't have to worry about where you roll your toon.

Currently downloading the client, about halfway done.

Tried it in Beta. It's crap, on a fundamental level. There is simply TOO MUCH broken in the basic mechanics that it's not fun to play.

I'll give it a go. Not sure I want to start paying monthly for a game right now, though. Although they DO take PayPal, which nobody else does.

Well, I got to play it a little bit. First impressions are mixed. Gun combat doesn't seem bad, melee combat seems clunky. I do like the setting, and the storyline seems interesting. I'll definitely give it more of a shot.

So an MMO was bad in beta, therefore it'll never be good?

Cmon Ash, you know better than that.
It's just a fundamental problem with the game. The big "idea" behind the game is that most of the stuff you need to survive is player made... you can buy some of the most basic stuff (some weapons, some components, some ammo, some food) but it's all hideously expensive, so your honestly better off making it yourself. Finding the components can be time consuming, but not anymore so than it would be in WoW or any other MMO. The problem is that crafting that stuff takes REAL TIME and you can only make one thing at a time (though you can Que stuff).

You want a stack of 40 bolts? That'll be 10 minutes. Want some chicken to eat? That's another 10 minutes. Want a new gun? That'll be 20 minutes. You want all three? That's 40 minutes in total. You want a motorcycle? 24 hours. It is possible to halve these times, but you need to sit by a table for the specific type of crafting you want to do then and you'll have to move around to a different one if you start making something else.

The enemies are also quite hard... you'll need around 3-4 crossbow bolts to kill a single early game mob. That's assuming that you always hit... which you won't. That means unless you spend a good deal of time making stuff (or buy them, which is expensive because enemies don't drop money consistently and their junk drops are basically worthless and heavy) your only going to be able to hunt down a few dozen mobs and hope you can get what you need from them.

That's the biggest problem of the game: It's based on scarcity of resources, but it has things to artificially inflate that scarcity even more. You don't need to worry about gold sinks when EVERYONE IS POOR. Your just punishing the early players! Don't drive away people in the first few hours of the game!

So lower the NPC ammo cost and reduce the time it takes (or increase the output per creation) to make an item and boom problems solved? Sounds like an obvious fix in a few months.

They'd also need to make the hitboxes on enemies bigger and make them move in a more predictable pattern. Probably make reloading faster too. I'd also combine some of the crafting disciplines (Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals for one. You shouldn't need two disciplines to make the most basic of healing items, ESPECIALLY if your limited in how many skill trees you can max out.)

There is still no explanation for why it costs less and takes less time to train a horse for riding than it does to make the most basic ammo :)

I'm done loading this game and will try it out tonight. Look for Edrondol. Don't know what class I'll be because I know nothing about the game at all & don't want to know until I'm there experiencing it.

It's not class based, it's skill point based.

It look interesting. I'm a crafter in most MMO. I might like this one. I will try the beta this weekend (hopefully)

All of the NCSoft games take PayPal. Just in case you want to delve into City of Heroes.

Also, I've got a question for everyone: What the smurf do you find so fun about crafting?

I'm still downloading the fucking patch! I walk away and my computer goes into sleep mode and stops updating.

I spent 18 hours trying to get 4.5 gigs of patch.

I have fiber optic! I can get 4 gigs in like 20 minutes.

So I just said "fuck it" and cancelled the patch and uninstalled the fucking thing.

It took me TWO DAYS to get it. I got into the game....and the interface is dumb as shit.

You can walk around all day and aim at anything you want, but to work your weapon you have to hit the Tab key. And once you are in "aim" mode you have to hit Tab again to get out of it.

This means that you run into bad guys and have to take precious seconds hitting the tab key or you can't shoot at them. Then when you are done you end up wasting ammo shooting at doors you are trying to open.

Oh come on... I am not that petty. Yes, they were told how bad the game was... but it's not exactly a big deal. You gotta let people make their own mistakes... even if the game is So bad you want to claw your eyes out. It's just a game after all!

After more time, with this game, it's not for me, for many of the reasons stated above.

This bothers me quite a bit. Consider that ammo ARE precious, I hate to waste any of it. I looks interesting, but I don't think it is for me either :(
