I may be wrong, but if I recall from being arrested myself years ago you are required to. Even if you have the money yourself, which I did, but wasn't allowed to post my own bail, was told it has to go through a bondsman regardless for some reason. I was infuriated when I found out what my bond was, was easily payable, but I couldn't have access to my own funds.
I was also in Texas where at the time I wasn't even allowed access to my own phone to get phone numbers, or a phone book, or any thing. I actually spent two or three days on the prison phone randomly dialing numbers I thought might be like one of my family members until I managed to get through to them (twice actually, because the first time we got disconnected before I even knew I dialed the right number).
To this day I never use speed dial when calling this person just to ensure I will never forget their number again, so that at least I know one person I can contact. If not for that, loose my phone, or god forbid something like that again, I have no idea how to call anyone.
