What's the deliverable for your writing? If it's going to wind up on the web I recommend just using a good text editor (not notepad. notepad++ is fine though) and writing in Markdown.

OpenOffice is free - excel/word/powerpoint and it's free!!

And I guess Gimp - free drawing software.

Yep. GIMP and OpenOffice are probably the most feature-rich.

Most of my drawings from the August Draw Every Day were drawn with Gimp, if that's any help to know. Mostly out of necessity because my Photoshop wasn't working at the time. But once you get used to the interface it can do (almost) anything Photoshop can.
