That show sucked. Everyone I grew up with is losing their minds over this. I get the feeling a lot of people enjoyed the cheesiness of it. It also takes on a whole new dimension when you learn what a filthy comedian Bob Saget really is.
I think that's part of it honestly. A lot of people remembering liking it at the time, and then shortly after seeing what COMPLETE crap it was, and now it's far enough away to watch it as complete cheesy crap, and yet you enjoy it. The ultimate guilty pleasure in a way. The "problem" with the show, is that it was
so successful that it defined many things that have since been mocked and deconstructed to such a point that they
reinforced just how important the show was to the "family sitcom" genre as a whole. It twists and turns in its value!
So if they do the spin-off right, it could actually end up really well by seeing the "result" of this rosy picture of un-reality. Or even worse modern shit if they do it wrong, but we'll have to see what happens. IMO worth watching 1 or 2 to see. Spectacle if nothing else.
As for Sagat, I 100% agree. I've heard his actual stand-up since, and I wonder how somebody like him could have taken the "clean-cut, completely family-friendly" persona he did there and on Funniest Home Videos. Maybe he saw the whole thing as complete parody, and wondered when people would catch on? I really don't know. For comparison, it'd be like Chris Rock (or somebody more extreme actually) playing that character. It would twist your brain, but if you ONLY saw him in that role first... imagine the horror/admiration at seeing how much he was
acting in the role when you then see his stand-up and how "not" it is like the character.
