M father, lucky for me, has schedule trip to Beijing in a couple weeks and is bringing up my new alienware laptop that I ordered. I need some game recommendations so he can pick up a couple for me.

I like FPS/Strategy/RPG---I like a lot of things. However, Im not interested in MMOs or anything that requires intensive online play to be any fun. It's not that I don't trust my internet connection in Shenyang, but I dont feel like dealing with latency issues connecting to servers on the other side of the planet. I'm already planning on getting SC2 when it comes out.

Time to go retro!

Yeah. But none of the expansions.

Unfortunately the only recent shooter RPG I can think of is Alpha Protocol and that game's a pile of puke on a pile of shit.

Orange Box- Gives you Half-Life 2, HL2: Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. All are FPS games (well.. Portal is more of a puzzle game) and all are considered must haves. Plus it's cheap as hell if you get it off of Steam.

Metro 2033- If you think Fallout is quaint and optimistic, this is the game for you. FPS game set after nukes level most of Russia.

Dragon Age: Origins- More Bioware RPG goodness.

Mass Effect 2- Same as above, but Sci-Fi and with more shooting.

Fallout 3: It's Oblivion with guns and that's not an insult. Lots of places to explore, lots of weapons to use, and lots of characters to meet as you try to bring the Waters of Life to the Capital Wasteland.

What about RTS? Dawn of War II? Was Age of Empires 3 ever any good? Should I wait for CIV 5?

You might just wanna wait for Starcraft 2 if you're looking for RTS.

Don't use this guy's strategies though if you play the game, he's terrible at saving ammo/things he'll REALLY need later on in the game.

The best thing about playing Fallout 3 on PC is the mods. Seriously, the experience is completely different from the console experience.

And what sort of Alienware laptop did you get? I like to browse their site sometimes and just drool at the monsters on sale, knowing I'll never be able to afford them.

PC Games:

Some have already been mentioned but I'll add to it:

Dragon Age will consume you for quite a while if given the chance.
Download MAME/ZSNES/Nesticle and you'll have years of games to play, of your genre choice.
Bioshock 1&2 provide fun hours of play each.
Assassin's Creed 1&2 are pretty much Bioshock in different wrapping.
Borderlands really did a number on my free time too.

And I'm not trying to be snarky with that comment. I am very curious as to how you make that comparison.

Fun games, easy objectives, always "pick up and play", finish easy, yet provide more than enough entertainment for their span.

Meh, I was unimpressed by Assassin's Creed. See my rants in the "What are you playing?" thread for details. I thought Batman: Arkham Asylum was a much better game in all the aspects that matter.

Assassins Creed 2 is a marked improvement over the first game. I highly recommend powering through AC1 for the plot and getting to AC2.

I have a soft spot for that era (Holy Crusades) so my opinion is pretty heavily biased due to that.

AC2 will NEVER be installed on my PC. Ubisoft can take their latest DRM and shove it. Requiring a constant connection to the internet is just too much. That's where I'm drawing the line in putting up with hoops to jump through to play a game.

Too bad people will just use that as the latest cool kids' excuse to pirate.

While I sortof understand the annoyance I also have to ask, What [Strike]self respecting gamer[/Strike] person does not have their internet connected 24/7?

Someone with Comcast and power brown-outs. I live in a semi-rural area where cable and power connections are a little glitchy. I have a UPS for my computer, but it doesn't cover the cable modem across the room. So, if I were to loose either power or cable while in the middle of playing Assassin's Creed 2 (it's happened to me while playing L4D and TF2) I'd loose all my progress since the last save and get booted back to the title screen. Sorry, I'm not going to put up with that if I have a choice. It doesn't have to happen in a single player game, and it shouldn't ever happen for a game that could work completely on my computer.

So rent it for Xbox. Problem solved.

I don't have an Xbox, and I don't want to buy one when I've got more than enough games to play on PC and Wii. I know people say that Assassin's Creed 2 is better, but there are a lot of games higher on my list that don't require a major investment to play.

So borrow an Xbox or a PS3 from a friend, surely you know somebody who owns one or both of those systems. At this point you're just making excuses to convince yourself not to play what is quite a good game.

Not wanting to put up with intrustive DRM and not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars is "just making excuses"?

EDIT: Yes, I do know one person with a 360 that would let me borrow it. If I ever work through the games I'd rather play than a sequel to a game I thought was mediocre at best, I'll consider that.

Good news (everyone).

I'm with Fig. Assassin's Creed 2's DRM is lame, and I'm never buying an Ubisoft game ever again. I won't pirate them either, so they can't point at me and go, "See, see, pirates are a problem!" As far as I'm concerned, Ubisoft no longer exists, they're dead to me.

Pity, too. I rather enjoyed Assassin's Creed 1.

I can live with the connection needed, it just serves 0 purpose for me and if they fuck up on their end I'm getting screwed. That's my beef with the current DRM from Ubisoft. Hell, just look at Settlers 7, people were/are unable to play that game on plenty of occasions due to Ubisofts servers sucking.

I do love Anno 1404 enough to put up with Ubisoft though, so sadly I'm sorta supporting them.

I'd just play Civ IV, SC2 Beta till Diablo 3, SC2 and Civ V come out.

I personally think that is a bad move on Ubisoft. If it need to "phone home" when you install and register your key and their server make your game work, GREAT! why not do that, but having a constant internet connection where it is not needed (i.e. single player game) that is just plain silly. I know we are in the internet age, but still, not everyone can be hook 24/7 and even the best still go down once in a while.

Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance is still the best RTS ever created.

Dawn of War (1, not 2) - Dark Crusade is a really good RTS as well, and if you like 40k, it'll be nerdgasmic for you.

Company of Heroes is an excellent WW2 RTS, though it.

If you want something that is quick and has replay value, try Demigod.


I don't recommend either DOWII or Supreme Commander 2.

Well, Valve is having it's summer sales, and all of their games are 33% off, so I would recommend biting at that. Some good savings, but only until July 4th.
