Way back when I wanted one, they were out of my price range but among the many things drooled over at Radio Shack. Now that I could afford such a great expenditure I've got all of that in my phone...at least for as long as the battery charge holds out! Those are damned cool though.

On that note, they used to have abacus competitions when I was in school in Japan and they were terrifying. I couldn't even figure out how to work one right and then my classmates would be doing ten digit division equations, ugggghkkkkkk. My neighbor went to the Japan Nationals. BLEH.

Proper way to work one? Hang on the wall as cool decor, use the smartphone version and the abacus is available if needed post-apocalypse. Or when the smart phone runs out of charge again.

Used to own a cheap one, it was handier than a full-on calculator for what it could do, though working the tiny buttons was a chore.

My neighbor went to the Japan [Abacus] Nationals. BLEH.

I've seen some YouTube footage of those. The top performers don't even need the physical abacus any longer. Watching people solve problems without an actual abacus borders on scary.

Calculator watches were cool, sure...but on a car trip or while waiting for the bus, this was the watch to have:

Wanted one when I was a kid, but now I have an actual calculator at my bench, on the computer, and on the phone. I wanted a ton of silly things when I was a kid though.

I remember in elementary school I won a class math competition, so I got to choose a prize out of the "Prize Box." I pissed everyone else off when I chose the clipboard with a built-in calculator on it.

I had one. I was much more proud of my Timex Datalink watch though. People just gave me weird looks when I tried to explain how it could transfer all my contacts from my computer to my watch wirelessly. I remember it could be a pain to try and hold your watch up to the monitor the whole time it transferred though. I kept moving it and screwing it up.
