Deep Purple * an under-known, but fantastic rock band
Anyone who doesn't know Smoke on the Water shouldn't be ALLOWED to listen to classic rock.
Everyone knows 'Smoke on the Water', so that point is moot. I might say that it is people who only have 'Smoke on the Water' and no other 'Purple songs who shouldn't be allowed to listen to classic rock. 'Smoke on the Water' is like 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Stairway to Heaven', 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Hotel California' - a great song that is overplayed to the detriment of the rest of the artist's catalogue.
That said, 'Machine Head' is a good Deep Purple album to start on. You get 'Smoke on the Water', but also 'Highway Star', 'Space Truckin'', 'Lazy' and others. Deep Purple are pretty hard rockers, and probably paved the way for the advent of Metal and bands such as Black Sabbath and Motorhead.
For classic rock, I'd go for bands like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, (Peter Green era) Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Cream/Derek & the Dominos (and other Clapton vehicles... check out Clapton with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers), the Allman Brothers, Queen, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, etc.
