Holy crap, and I thought Dmitri was bad.

Chibibar

Wow........ 178 calls/message/text a day? (any combination of) that is pretty bad.

Do they not have call block features over there? I know that 4 of my 5 current blocked phone numbers were ex-onenightstands. There's a reason I go back to their place and not mine....

From the article, looks like the woman using multiple phones (throw-a-way probably) and many different email/PC. I guess she was using different ISP/IP rotation or something to get around blocks?

That is pure determination.

I can slightly understand that. Sometimes people don't understand the simple "I don't like you/want to be with you" statement. It's like you've raised the bar on the challenge at that point.

I'll bet she's hot, too. :eww:

I tried to find her picture by googling "Dutch Television" but instead found this old gem that makes me giggle every time.

Calls is too much but I've messaged in the thousands with some people at times. It takes a lot of texts to have a conversation.

There's a difference between texting someone, and stalking someone through texts. When you have to use different phones and numbers, that's the time to take the hint.

He couldn't answer because he was masturbating 42 times in one night.

I was mostly responding to chibis incredulity. Sometimes that many texts is fine.

He should have just picked up some milk like she asked the first time.

That's actually a Belgian.

I read about the stalker woman in the newspaper and didn't think much of it - they conveniently excluded the number of times she had called this person.

I guess if needed that much to a single person.

My wife and I usually only text concise short message. If it needs to be more than 3 text, then just make a phone call and talk about it. If I need to make 100+ Texts in a single day? Why not just send in a form of email?

#14

makare

Maybe you don't have internet, you are having an actual back and forth traditional style conversation or you just prefer texting. I much prefer texting to email.

#15

Ravenpoe

Ravenpoe

Talking on phones actually annoys me. I have to clutch the damn thing the entire time and I can't do much of anything else unless I set it to speaker. For which the quality often sucks way too much to really make that an option. Calling me is crippling me.
Hands free?

#16

Chibibar

I usually send email from my phone :) so I figure that is an option too.

#17

Chibibar

ok. given the situation of TWO way conversation, it is possible to have over 178 text/calls/email (combination of) a day.

But this woman was doing ONE way (stalking) and the guy is trying to ignore her.

#18

Chibibar

So it took the amount of 65,000 unwelcome messages for him to say, "Hrmm.. Well.. I guess I should do something about it." ?
I don't think so. Maybe he tried to ignore, call block (do they have that?) email block, cell phone block, but I guess the woman is persistent (the raid did find multiple cellphones and PC) so she was pretty adamant in getting to him.

Even a threat of "Do not contact this man and will give you bail" didn't work.

I am personally curious on what the message is about. Is she totally "in love" with the man or trying to "bitch him out" messages.

#19

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Yeah this was pretty much saying that she contacted him 65,000 times, not that they conversed that long.

I missed this article in the Dutch news. I found one that was posted a week earlier, which says that it was 70,000 times in 4 months :Leyla:

The man reported her to the police for stalking, and they arrested her at her house (sounds a bit nicer than a 'raid'..). They seized several phones and a laptop (as in one). She also claims that he was her ex-bf (so they weren't in a relationship anymore during the time she stalked him. Sorry, 'allegedly' stalked him.)

I don't drive in a car. I walk around. I also like to have somewhat private conversations at times without someone blurting out what 'fun we had' last weekend over speaker while walking through a supermarket. I text. It's private. Unless I'm home.
I was referring to a hands free device, such as a bluetooth headset. I use one, and love it. It's a pair of wireless headphones, so when I'm finished talking, they can also be used for normal headphone use.

GasBandit

GasBandit

I also hate phone calls, but it's because cell phone call quality, regardless of provider, is shit. Half the time I have to ask the other person to repeat every single sentence.

But my phone can text with voice recognition, so I usually end up "speaking" my texts out loud. Faster and easier than typing.

That's strange. I can hear people fine when I call them. Is it a locale thing?

Maybe you have loud friends. Or I guess it could be in the south, we tend to mumble and slur. Which wasn't a factor on landlines.

#27

The voice quality on my phone is fine, too. Maybe you should tell your friends to take the chaw out of their mouth before calling.

I suppose it could also come from not living in a large metropolitan area. But I haven't had a cell phone that had landline-level sound quality since they stopped using analog signals in the 90s. In contrast, skype/voip call quality is crystal clear.

#29

drifter

Don't cell phones use compression? I imagine it's somewhat akin to listening to an mp3 versus [preferred lossless format here]. It's understandable, but not equal.

I dont know about your theory about where you live. I mean I live nowhere near a metropolitan area and my phones are great. I can understand people just fine. Now how it compares to land line I realized I don't remember. I havent had to use a land phone on a regular basis in a long time. So maybe I have just gotten used to what you consider lower quality.

I can't hear what people say on cell phones either. I have really horrible hearing though, and I think it's more the speakers than anything else. I don't even try anymore. After about the third time I ask someone to repeat themselves, I just tell them to text me.

Maybe it is the speaker... even on the best of days, the call quality is comperable to a bad drive-thru speaker.

#33

Shakey

That's exactly what it sounds like for me. It doesn't matter how loud I have it, it's just never clear enough to understand.

I don't think makare is old enough to remember what good call reception sounds like. I honestly have one the best services in the country, one of the most expensive phones, amazing connection in my area, and yes I agree 100% with Gasbandit. I can understand people, but it's NOWHERE near what I'd call "Crystal clear" reception.

I believe she's late 20s early 30s... plenty old enough to remember land lines. Makare's just got a different reference point for just about every observable phenomena ever. I mean, remember the "don't click this link" thread?

#36

makare

Yeah I am 27 I had a land line for a long time. Maybe my ears just work well?

#37

fade

I'm kind of in the middle. It certainly isn't landline, but my own experience has been fairly clear. You can definitely hear digital artifacts from the compression, which tend to show up as unnatural robot-like sounds in the voice.

When I first got my iPhone, I thought the sound was horrible. I could barely hear. I was at the point of sending it back, when I realized the volume on the earpiece was way down. Now, I'm not an idiot. The loudness of the conversation seemed fine. But oddly enough, when I turned the volume up, the conversation didn't get much louder, but it got significantly clearer.

It's also entirely possible my ears are just severely damaged. I do have "drive you absolutely insane in a silent environment" grade tinnitus.

#39

Shakey

Shakey

That's what I have too. I even got the "were you even trying?" from the doctor when I took a hearing test over 10 years ago. I'm sure it's gotten even worse since then.

#40

makare

Man I cant imagine constant tinnitus. It drives me mad.

it's not so bad so long as there's something nearby making noise. Even a fan on the lowest setting is usually enough to drive it off.

It's only like... in the bathroom, with the door closed, and nothing on... the silence reverberates and it gets louder and louder and OH MY GOD MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP WHERE'S MY SCREWDRIVER I HAVE TO REMOVE MY COCHLEA

The constant ringing in my ears has turned me into one of those bastards that can constantly click their pen and not notice. Repetitive noises no longer bother me at all.

#44

GasBandit

it sounds kinda like this, but the tone is "breathier" in mine and it just gets the louder the longer I go without hearing actual noise (skip to :28)

That's over 11 times an hour assuming she sleeps 8 hours a night. So like once every five minutes, every single day, for an entire year.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think I've had it literally my entire life. I'm not trying to sound like an emo git or something, but I think I literally don't know what silence sounds like because of this.

I'd make a terrible astronaut - "I don't see what the big deal is out here."
