Halforums Academy 2 Story Commentary Thread

Ok folks, this is the thread to follow. Whenever I make an update to the blog that holds the Halforums Academy 2 content, this is where I'll come to notify everybody.

To get things started, in addition to the map and schedule that's been there since the blog was instantiated, I've now put up a teaser trailer that I threw together quick and dirty as a proof of concept of whether or not doing this via videos will work.

The good news is that I think I can pull it off! It will just take longer. Processing a single game "day" will probably take me 2 to 3 weeknights of work, so the updates will come less frequently than in the first HFA. However, I'm hoping the increase in production value makes up for it!

Late edit - Here's the youtube playlist that will contain all the videos in proper order, suitable for those who arrive late to the party and want to watch them correctly.

Clubs are apparently more important this time around than they were the first time. Not only do they actually affect INT/STR (as previously noted), there is also a hidden "Club score" that figures into your grades every two weeks. All that, plus the same socialization issues from AA1 (you get more opportunities to socialize with people in the same club as you).

Any student can switch any time they want (if I'm controlling them, I can just go to the staff room and sign up for a different club), and also if a student particularly likes a student from another club, they might try to convince them to change clubs (which can happen while I'm not controlling them, so I may not even notice for a few days that "oops soandso's on a different team now").

The only drawback is, I think it resets your club score to do so, which eliminates any grades bonuses that good club participation may give you.

Well, of course, technically so does the swim team (their swimsuits) but everybody wears those on tuesday and thursday, when PE is in the pool.

God I hated our Marching Band Uniform. We looked like we were from a depressed gay Franco-Austrian military academy (since our colors were garnet and grey). Especially the shako hats with the "dead sparrow" plumes.

Well you may have noticed Halforums Academy's colors are white, black, blue and red. The band uniforms are basically the same shirt in blue for the boys, but the girls get an entirely different blazer with long sleeves and all that sort of thing (probably was originally meant to simply be the "winter" uniform).

~~They are not indicative of anything, other than that the colors are consistent in their use according to personality type. There isn't any other significance to them.~~

HA HA DISREGARD THAT I CLUCK SOCKS. The background color indicates sexual alignment.

Red Cards are given to pure Heterosexual characters.
Orange Cards are given to characters who lean towards Heterosexuality.
Purple Cards are given to Bisexual characters.
Green Cards are given to characters who lean towards Homosexuality.
Blue Cards are pure Homosexual characters.

I had to take my own "headshots" with in-game screenshots this time around, because unlike last time, the automatically generated PNG cards from the game's character generator are not easily censored to make them SFW.

They all look like this (NSFW):

And they actually all contain all the character metadata, so the PNG file actually serves as a "trading card" that gets you the whole character for your copy of the game. IF ONLY THEY WORE CLOTHES.

But then, I guess I'm using the game for non-standard applications - it's SUPPOSED to be wank material, and I'm trying to use it as a social simulator

Though, SOMEBODY at Illusion Software must have heard about this sort of thing, because now there's an option in the game's setup to automatically skip all the hentai scenes during play.

And he doesn't even have the "always hungry" trait! I guess that only stops you from inviting OTHERS to lunch more than once.

Also, he managed gym class just fine after lunch... so I don't think it was the lunches that hurt him at track later.. but I could be wrong.

Can't you use the same music? I know a lot of tv shows (cartoons, in particular) have stock music. It's up to you, but it really doesn't bother me if you reuse it.

There's no technical reason I can't, but I need to keep the audio as fresh as I can, or people will start to nod off around day 13 when I'm saying "He talks to Gusto. Bones wants to talk. Seltzy asks for help with studying." for the 900th time with the same music track behind it. Plus, if you followed HFA1, you know I love to insert subtle jokes in background elements for the observant.

I have an endless source of royalty-free stock music available to me, both professionally and through youtube (they provide it free for content creators to use), it's just a matter of digging through the immense pile for stuff that fits. I'd dug out 6 or 8 selections already before I started production that I thought could be useful, but just about all of them got used already.

That's basically the point. We're indulging in the ridiculousness of Japanese dating/life-sims combined with the quirkiness of our fellow Halforumites. I guess it's kind of a form of machinima, when you get down to it - not to the same point as RvB or The Strangerhood, naturally, but kind of the same idea.

Actually, the skirts just blow up a lot in the low poly models... in the high poly models, the girls' skirts are all below the knee.

Not to say it isn't a porn game, cause it's totally a porn game. But when you strip out the porn (and I do strip out all the porn for this exercise), it's actually also still a very entertaining social simulator. Try reading through the posts from last years' game, if you haven't already.[DOUBLEPOST=1415394579,1415394269][/DOUBLEPOST]That said, I'm also a little disappointed that Illusion decided to "toonify" the art/models more in the sequel. The models from the first Artificial Academy were more quasirealistic, and I really appreciated the artistry that went into the faces and such. The Gainax factor was also kept to a minimum. But I guess we all know what sells in Japan is different from what appeals to western audiences, and this was clearly never meant to be marketed in the US.[DOUBLEPOST=1415394985][/DOUBLEPOST]To illustrate what I mean with the art, compare Mindy Tective from last year, with basically the same character from this year.

At first, even the photo/text format was hard last year, and like that, I expect this will get easier and faster with time and practice.

I'm also considering I may have to finally find some REAL video authoring software... this ep was so big and convoluted it actually went full blown "overzealous prom date mode" and gagged the hell out of windows movie maker (which is, after all, a 32 bit application), and I ended up having to produce it in 3 parts and then produce it AGAIN to merge all 3 parts together. I was worried how that would affect video quality (compressing and recompressing and then youtube compression on top of that), but it doesn't seem to have done much damage.

Some interesting data I stumbled across in preparation for recording the next day's footage.

Ash no longer has Fei Rendar's 4-leaf clover friendship token - she has traded it to Bones for the "key to Bones' anime vault."

Raven has Wasabi's fuzzy socks.
Wasabi has Dirona's saint's medallion.
Dirona has Raven's gargoyle DVDs.

This leads me to believe that Wasabi traded items with Raven, then traded with Dirona.

It'll be interesting to watch over the course of the series where the various items end up.

If I'm reading the data right, your problem is I think you spent all of day 2 with Dirona and Li Jun. You've got high "like" scores with both of them, and you consider Dirona your best friend. Nobody else has interacted with you enough to form an opinion.

The interesting thing is that, it almost looks like there's two factions forming... the Fei-Eriol-Ash faction that are on good terms with the teacher, and the Dirona-CeltZ-Wasabi faction that are beginning to earn the teacher's disapproval. Most of the students are drifting toward one faction or the other. Of course, that's a lot of extrapolation from only two data samples. Day 3 could change everything up again. Somebody sure pissed in Zero Esc's cornflakes though. She thinks the teacher is completely incompetent, and while she was over the moon about Fei on day one, now she doesn't like him. Doesn't HATE, just doesn't like. She's still friendly with Bones, though.

You could actually also be responsible for the death of another, too - apparently the Evil trait has been tweaked such that if you seduce an evil character, than the evil character catches on that you've cheated on them with someone else, the someone else is in just as much danger as you are. I'm not sure how it decides who gets stabbed... it might be random, or as simple as whoever gets seen first.

Also, it seems fighting style counts for a lot in violent confrontation. Lana outclasses Dirona by almost double... but because Dirona uses "One Blow" and Lana has "No Reserve," the Rock-Paper-Scissors model gave the match to Dirona.

It surprised the hell out of me, too. But I guess being athletic doesn't necessarily mean you can take a punch, anymore. I'm not sure a R-P-S dynamic is really a gameplay improvement, but it is... different.

Ech. Ash's day didn't actually turn out particularly interesting. I'm considering rolling it back and trying again. Getting social interactions was like pulling teeth, and I got the idea that I "just missed" a lot of interesting things going on a screen or two over that ended right as I got there. Bleh. I shot by far the most raw footage of any day so far, but I have a feeling if I edit it down, it'll be short. like maybe 6 minutes short, and not even the best 6 minutes of the game so far.

Yeah, I think I just talked myself into trying it again.

Alright, I replayed the day, and am somewhat more satisfied with the results.

Overall though I'm not sure I'm liking some of the differences between AA1 and AA2. Aside from what else has already been discussed (character models, simplified character generation, etc), everything feels a lot more... random. The character simulations don't seem as strong, and interactions are starting to get repetitive already on only the first day. I had interaction values set at 3x baseline because that was necessary in AA1, but now I'm wondering if that isn't too high for AA2, it feels like relationships are forming and breaking, whipsawing back and forth in the space of a single day. One day somebody's name is mud, the next your friends are telling you to be nice to them. One day a couple seem absolutely over the moon, the next day they're cooling off rapidly and maybe breaking up. Well, we'll see how this all works out I suppose. It'll take me a day or two to edit this footage, probably. I'm guessing sunday night for the upload.

If I'd had my druthers, I think I'd have rather done HFA2 in AA1 again... if not for that pesky self-hate bug.

You make it sound almost like there's one of those "donation drive" thermometers on every female character, and if it just happens to hit the "goal achieved" level within a certain amount of time...then the magic happens.

As I understand it, yes. It could take as many as ten "deposits" but it could take as few as 5. You get the first 4 for free, after that it's a roll of the dice. It also resets the counter each week.

Also, I had been thinking on waiting to the weeky report to talk about relationship statuses, but things are happening so fast I guess I need to do that daily now!

Obviously Ash and Bones are in a declared relationship now. They're nauseatingly twitterpated over each other.

Raven and Gusto are officially dating, but Gusto's very unhappy with the relationship as Raven's been spending so much time with Ronan, who's completely over the moon for her. Gusto's also starting to really notice Dei...

Fei Rendar's just asking for trouble all over the place. He's "a couple" with Shakey... AND Lana... AND THE TEACHER.

So far he's been getting away with it, somehow Lana and Petra haven't caught him doing anything serious with Shakey, and trust me, there's been a LOT of bonin' goin on between Rendar and Shakey. I guess they're just good about finding private spots first. Rendar's kinda frustrated with Lana though because he has caught her cheating (hypocrite that he is)... with Zero. Also, his feelings toward Shakey seem to be trending toward breaking up, though she's still completely crushing on him. But because of the teacher factor, all 3 of them are now in danger of stabbin', plus whoever else in the coming days happens to catch Rendar's wandering eye.

Speaking of Zero, surprise of surprises, she's been having sex with BOTH Lana AND Raven. No official relationships however, and whatever she had with Raven is already over and the two can no longer stand each other.

Obviously Raven's still got the most notches on her belt, having deflowered Rendar, Gusto, and Zero - seems like my supposition about her "collecting virgins" was right. After one romantic encounter, she tends to go cold on whoever her conquest was.

I don't think they'll all be this long, but I doubt any will ever be shorter than 10 minutes. It depends how much happens that I deem important enough to include. I've already clipped out a bunch of repeat conversations. You can only have the same conversation about movies with somebody so many times before the audience starts groaning.

Also you spend a LOT of time with Dirona and Li Jun, which is why I think we also haven't been seeing as much of them lately. You're also good pals with Wasabi, and even the teacher likes you, despite the company you keep.

I'm doing it on Roster order (which is basically the order by which people completed their characters). It goes by columns, top down, right to left. The teacher (assuming she is still in the game by day 11) will not have a day.

In the cases of some, yes. In the case of others... well, FF, Gusto, Raven, Dirona, and maybe Lana all seem to be close to type, and Kags is similar but just seems to have un-aged by about 2-3 years. Shakey and Ash are by far the most changed though, as I've mentioned previously. Stienman too, even genderswap notwithstanding.

Plus we've got a lot of new blood.

Speaking of blood... like I said, I foresee the need for a transfer student. And a new teacher. Not sure what I'm gonna do about that one. Maybe no teacher? Maybe I'll shanghai a random forumite and make a teacher based on them. Still debating.

As of the end of day 4, Wasabi is generally well liked, except she's had some kind of tiff with Rendar and the two don't much care for each other. She is considered a friend by Celt Z, Kags, Zero, Raven, Shakey, Lana, Eriol, Li Jun, and especially Ash and Dirona. Wasabi does not like the teacher, wishes Raven and Shakey were a little more discreet about their amorous activities (but still is friends with both), and is otherwise pretty much friendly with everybody who is likewise to with her. She also has kind regards for Cheesy and Film Fanatic, though they haven't gotten to know her well enough yet to say the same.

Tough to say. Rendar's current strength score is 50% higher than yours.. but you use Irregular style, which generally beats One Blow, which is Rendar's style. Yeah, really. Unfortunately, the ecchi content is the primary focus of the developers, and there's not a lot of effort put in to "off label useage" support of this particular pharmaceutical

At any rate, I'm learning all kinds of neat stuff which is going to improve the production value of the series some. It's just slowing me down while I re-learn.

The new graphic really helps draw attention to it, I think. Under WMM, best I could do was point at it with a red arrow. The REJECTION buzzer seems a much more handy way to illuminate conflicts like that.

And I'm still learning more about using Premiere every day, seeing how I've barely scratched the surface. I can even see a difference between the early parts of the day and the later parts, with editing, where I was starting to get better at it.

It seems about half and half. I've heard as much "wow that's totally not how high school went for me" doing this as I have "yep that's totally how it went," and that's not even counting the people who deliberately rolled characters that depart from their actual selves. One also has to keep in mind that this is actually a very simplistic simulation that gets a lot of narrative embellishment from yours truly.

I was actually also surprised about Gregory and Eriol - they've been very discreet. It's kind of a relief, after how Raven carried on - I was worried that public sex might turn out a lot more rampant it did, but apparently some kids are using the options for privacy available to them.

(There are several rooms around the map that can only be entered as pairs, and attempting to do so counts as a sexual proposition - bathroom stalls, locker room shower stalls, the gym storage room, the machine room by the athletic field, the counselor's office, and there's a love hotel - the pink sign just up the street from the city plaza. Also, in the "evening" time of day, people can invite other people to come study with them at home, and if they're horny enough, it invokes the trope)

Amazingly enough, there are several students (even besides Rendar) who like the teacher, for whatever bizarre reason. I had to make a gif of several instances of the chart (all taken within a second of each other) because the chart randomly alternates between their personal opinions and professional appraisals. So even though the chart below is "changing" they all represent multiple thoughts or opinions held about the teacher at almost the same instant in time.

Like I said, the UI translations in this game were done by horny weeaboos. "Mai Waifu" is an Azumanga Daioh reference, but what it really indicates in game is a strong amount of love for someone with whom he is in a relationship. The scale of "pink" statuses goes -
