Hey I've been here a bit. And this is crazy. But let's play by post, and I'll DM maybe?

Ebberon setting but my interpretation of it so miss me with that "that's not how that faction works!" It is here baby because I'm your god!

Real loosy goosy. Roll real dice if you want. I trust ya. Just send me your character sheet (pix are fine doesn't have to be on D&D beyond)

Official stuff is good to go. Your half assymar half demon hot boi half drizzit who beat Vox Machina with the power of love and incredible violence is APPRECIATED but BANNED.

I haven't DM'd before so this might be a bumpy ride. But I figure play by post kinda gives me time to think about what happens next and stuff? Might be fun, might fizzle out reaaaaaaaal quick. Who knows!

If there's interest I'll post some lore so people can start thinking about their character and then make a separate thread that will be RP only while this thread will be all out of character talk.

Eilonwyren "Ren" is a beautiful, yet some times naive young half elven bard, with flowing red hair and a bounce in her step she loves to perform and meet new people and yearns to travel to new places! She is quick to trust and believes there is good in everyone, but has a mischievous side to her, that only her sharp wits and persuasive nature have kept her our of too much trouble. A shadow follows her, not of her own making. The acts of her parents have enraged the dark mage Vapore'Ladro, who seeks revenge upon her family with his evil horde. Eilonwyren has been given an amulet that prevents any and all attempts by Vapore'Ladro from finding her. It is her most sacred possession.

A little about our setting:

Ebberon is a little different than your normal D&D setting.
Khorvaire is the continent that will be the setting of the adventure. The Last War ™ ended 2 years ago. 4 years ago, one of the 5 nations that was in the war was completely wiped out due to The Mourning ©

No one knows what caused The Mourning and no one knows if it could happen again. That was the catalyst to the war ending.

When you make your character try to think of how the war affected you. Did you fight in it? Did you lose your home? Maybe you profited off of it?

Races are a little different than what you might be used to. Elves tened to be a bit more warrior focused. Orcs live in largely druidic society and guard the lands. Goblins and goblinoids are rebuilding their once great kingdom. Halflings ride their dinosaur mounts in the Talenta Plains. Changelings tend to hide in small groups among other races and choose not to reveal their true nature. Shifters live in tight knit communities and avoid the order of the Silver Flame that once hunted them. Warforged are trying to figure out their role as a literal war machine in a time of peace.

Dwarves still dig in mountains though so that's nice. Let me know if you have any questions or want any more info on any of this.

Quick nation breakdown!

Aundair- magic! Floating cities, the best mage academies and also monks! The deadliest nerds are from here

Breland- the biggest of the human nations after the war. Home of Sharon, the biggest city in the continent. Some of the best spies are from here.

Cyre AKA the mournlands- used to be the biggest and wealthiest nation. Now a mist hangs over the entire land. When the mist spread most everyone who encountered it either fell over dead, or worse. Not many people made it out. A small town of New Cyre has been established in Breland.

Darguun- once a part of Cyre, Goblin mercenary groups broke off and formed their own nation. Goblins once ruled the whole of Khorvaire long ago and are egar at a chance to rebuild.

Demon wastes- Demons, Barbarians and not a whole lot more. The barbarian tribes are either maddened and worship the demons or the dragon below, or work tirelessly to keep the evil within their borders from escaping.

Droaam- once a part of Breland many of the "monstrous" races live here. Ruled by a council of Hags.

Eldeen Reaches- once a part of Aundair these lands are fiercely independent and more a mixture of various peoples who wish to be free. Druidic in nature and largely farming or forest communities.

Karrnath- first of the human kingdoms. While many soldiers in the last war had but one life to give to their country the necromancers of Karrnath ensured that their people had Two.

Lhazaar Principalities- Pirates!

Mror Holds- Dwarves! The dwarves of the Mror Holds were once exiles of their own lands. The dwarves that remained hidden in their mountains were eventually never heard from again.

Q’barra- home of the lizard folk and dragon kin. Rich in the highly sought after dragon shards that are used in many magical rituals

Shadow Marches- while officially a part of the human empire these lands were never truly colonized and occupied by the kingdoms. Orcs and humans live here and spend their time tending to nature and mining for dragon shards.

Talenta Plains- Fuckin' Jurassic Park meets the shire.

Thrane- A theocracy human kingdom run by the order of the silver Flame. Their breaking away from the human empire was part of the cause of The Last War ™

Thronehold- a small island in the middle of the largest river. This used to be the seat of power for the human empire. Now it sits as a type of neutral ground where representatives from all nations gather to ensure that the treaty that ended the war is upheld. Many spies find good work here.

Valenar- after the goblin mercenaries broke from Cyre the Elven mercenaries figured..."well, sure why not?" And followed suit. I mean they used to live here 10,000 years ago! Why shouldn't they live here again? The Valenar calvary is second to none in all of Khorvaire.

Zilargo- home of the gnomes and a tinkering paradise. Also assassin's but we dont talk about them so much. Much of the arcanotech of Khorvaire can be found here.

So how do you feel about the Aarakocra race? Their racial abilities aren't that amazing, but they do fly.
What alignments are acceptable Are you running a Pure Good campaign, a regular campaign where we're supposed to be at least nominally on the side of "Good", generally, a Neutral-to-Evil campaign in Crapsack World? I have no desire to play Evil, just trying to get to grips with the feel. I don't think I've ever played in Ebberon...and I don't actually know much of anything about it.

Aarakocra should be fine. There's ranged weapons and spells so even if you're flying it's not like you just CAN'T be hit. I'm willing to allow it. Unless you're crazy strong doing things like picking people up and dropping them will still be really hard to do.

Alignment is anything goes. My only rule is that even if you're chaotic or evil or whatever there's still an expectation to work with the group. No stealing from the group, no PVP and so on.

Ebberon is a world of shades of grey. None of the factions are purely good and few of them are purely evil.

The order of the silver Flame for example works tirelessly against evil and demons and the like. They also had a crusade against Shifters (descendants of lycanthropes) a few hundred years ago. They aren't as xenophobic these days but they haven't really apologized for what they did. They work for the greater good and are Tolerant of other religions but they're also like that guy who just asks you strait up where you go to church instead of asking if you're even religious at all.

The Blood of Vol is a necromantic order of undeath. To them, divinity resides within us all and death is how we ascend to our higher calling. When they turn one of their own into a vampire it's not a power grab it's seen as martyrdom. The vampire won't ever die and achieve divinity but they can guide others to theirs. They aren't purely evil in any sense as they don't push their beliefs on others but to outsiders looking in it looks pretty bad for sure.

For backstory don't worry too much about it being a huge and fleshed out character. We can fill things in later when you have a chance to play with your character and see where they take you. The main things I want are:

Relation with The Last War- not everyone fought in the war but everyone was affected by it in some way.

Family- just some basics on if you have any family or not and basic relationship with them.

"I know a guy"- this is an NPC that you will make. They're your _____ person. Maybe they're your go to on magical item identification. Maybe they're an airship pilot who can be bribed. Maybe they just have their ear to the ground about current affairs. Probably don't assume that you're just super tight with the king of one of the nations but hey maybe you know a 3rd cousin or something.

Slapdash Bio

Created towards the end of the war as a courier through enemy lines, Slapdash earned his nickname through quick, often hazardous solutions to problems. While his tinkering is considered over-engineered at best and outright dangerous at worst, his control of his own body is remarkable. At the conclusion of the war, with nowhere to go, Slapdash found himself training with the monks of Aundair. (I still need a monastery etc. to affiliate with.)

There are other courier units like Slapdash but they tend not to know each other or even really recognize each other as family.

"I know a guy" - As the war came to a close, Slapdash was promoted to lieutenant and oversaw a small contingent of fresh couriers. While never close to those couriers, as the war ended shortly thereafter, he did develop a bond with another human officer, Captain Gil Frenson. They have exchanged correspondence over the two years since the war ended but not seen each other since then.

So we have:

@MindDetective - Warforged monk
HuGlans - Half-Elven bard
Phil's Wife - ?
@Celt Z - you want to join?
@bhamv3 - come on, you know you want to!
Bubble181 - I guess

For the other potential players - anyone interested in playing a healer/tank/rogue/other specific type/role?
If left to my own devices I intend to play an Aarakocra Warlock ranged DPS sort of thing (Laser-Shooting Terror Drone combined with really pretty plumage, kinda). but I can enjoy playing more of a Druid/Cleric-ish healer or tank character too. I'm not fond of playing the thief/lockpick/sneak style, honestly.

Also, @phil I rolled real dice and ended up with 17, 7,16, 8, 15 and 13. Which is great for the 17 & 16 (and the 17 was two sixes and two fives...could've used that 5 to go with the 2-2-2-3 I rolled right after), but a Warlock doesn't actually need that many good stats, so I can take on a class that needs high stats (Paladin or whatever) if necessary.

#27

My wife rolled up a lizard folk druid yesterday. I'd imagine she would go circle of the moon and utilize wild shapes a lot so I wouldn't expect a lot of healing from her.

That being said please play what you want. If the party is completely lacking in some regard we can find a solution. Healbots and tanks can be hired or whatever.

In between missions I'll be opening things up so that if people want to join, bow out, or retire their current character for something new they can.

Brenlin Norixius, the Life domain Cleric.

www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Farwielder_79122593.pdf

1658577826489.png

*Except imagine that's a viol, not a lute.

This would technically be more accurate though not as polished.
1658577791113.png

Brenlin is a green dragonborn and current devote life domain cleric, using his faith in Silvanus as a traveling healer. Always upbeat, to a fault, and happy to assist when needed. While living mostly off the land, the bulk of his material possessions were either found, scrounged, or donated in payment of his services and are in many stages of disrepair, ranging from gently used to barely held together. Despite this, Brenlin manages to exude a captivating bohemian style and always manages to make even the rattiest rags look more dashing than they have any right to be. Handsome, while being personally unaware of it, he easily fits in with most and is fast to make friends. While a novice viol player, he is quick to add music to any situation. Originally hailing from Ka'rhashan in Q'barra, The Last War saw Brenlin journey across Eberron, healing the sick and injured, without loyalty to any one faction or army.

Relation with The Last War-Brenlin worked tirelessly to heal those injured by the war despite how it ravaged the natural world around him. He sees himself as a tool for the ebb and flow of life and nature and while surrounded by death and the loss of those he'd attempted to heal, he knew that their life force would return to nature and has always maintained a positive outlook, throughout the war and beyond.

Family-Only surviving direct blood relative after the war is Brenlin's father, General Skaarl Norixius, a high-ranking military official. Ruthless and cunning he has distanced himself from his son believing he should have used his magics to benefit their faction solely in the last war. He has grown to despise Brenlin for not being near to save his favoured child Brenlin's half-sister, the rising star champion warrior, Ishla. While Brenlin mourns Ishla's passing, he does not lament her, or anyone's death, further infuriating his father. Brenlin's birthmother, Hekhei, died while he was young, succumbing to an unknown illness. In an effort to understand why she passed, Brenlin reviewed multiple faiths and dieties over the years, finally coming to align himself with Silvanus, The Old Father, as a way to cope with her loss, never fully letting her go and believing her lifeforce, as well as any others lost, continue on in a never-ending cycle nourishing and growing new life.

His father remarried shortly after his mother's passing and while he grew close with his half-sister Ishla, he was never more than cordial with his new step-mother, and she never pushed the matter.

"I know a guy"- While traveling during the war, during a respite between battles Brenlin heard, very faintly from a nearby barn, a haunting yet beautiful melody. Upon further inspection, he found a young human farm boy, a viol prodigy playing in the waning evening light, softly but with purpose, a dirge for the fallen soldiers. When the song ended Brenlin called up to the young boy and complimented his prowess. Startled at first, unaware anyone had been listening, he graciously bowed to the Dragonborn. They spoke for a while during that first meeting, sharing their life stories and bonding over their desire to shirk the expectation from their families that they'd follow into their respective familial professions, war in Brenlin's case and farming in the boys. The boy, Jonas Criswell, was hopeful the war would soon end and allow him to travel and share his gift with the world. In the following years, Brenlin would visit the farm when passing through the area to listen and learn what he could of the viol and spend time talking with his friend. On one of these visits, shortly after the war ended, Jonas mentioned that he would be finally setting off to try to make a name for himself. Brenlin has yet to encounter Jonas since that last visit but has heard rumors of his success and growing fame.

OK, I was being optimistic about my ability to throw together a character from a race I've never played and don't have the books for, with a class I haven't played in 8 years, in a system I haven't played in 8 years, during work hours. 3.5 is ingrained muscle memory, 5.0 isn't, apparently. I barely remember what proficiencies are :-D
Sorry. Mostly there, but there's been so much stuff that's been released over the past years it's a combination of a pain and pleasure to try and find what I want. I'll try to have it by EOD tomorrow, but for *some* reason we just spent the weekend doing 5 family visits, and tomorrow we're leaving right after work to go do a family visit.

One question I did have, as I'm a bit unfamiliar with play by post games. Is it better for me to take an action and assume you'll want a roll for it preemptively and make that roll in the initial post then await your call on the outcome? Or should I be describing my intent, you then come back and say "make x roll/check", I make the roll and then we wait for your call?

I don't want to step on your toes by assuming outcomes of rolls I decided to make sort of thing.

Great question! Feel free to take the initiative on out of combat rolls. If you walk into a room and want to roll perception (just looking around) or investigate (looking and touching and moving things) feel free to do the roll and then I'll describe the outcome. Let me know too if you're looking for a specific outcome with a roll or not.

I read a fantasy series that dealt with a gifted musician. They would play in taverns and patrons would buy them drinks. The musician would have an agreement with the bartender where the bartender would charge for a pint and serve the musician a watered down pint and the pair would split the difference. I think that could be a neat thing to develop. But not the rest of the character, that guy was OP AF.

The worst I find is if you own the physical version of the books, you have to rebuy it all again if you want to use it in beyond. I know this was a by-product of DDB being owned by one company while the books were published and owned by another but at this point, they've merged. Figure it out. Which I get is saying dump a massive revenue stream and won't happen but jesus.

Hi, my name is Erithacus Rubecula.

As a young hatchling, the Breland military claimed me for the Kingdom. I don't know exactly what happened. I never got an explanation later on. I was assigned to the navy as a lookout - who better to keep an eye out for dangers than one who will happily stay afloat for hours at a time?

I spent quite a bit of time helping protect the ship I was assigned to, living and learning from the crew. Just before the end of the war, on our last voyage, we were plunged into an inexplicable darkness I couldn't see through. When the light returned, I was floating over an empty ocean.

This event shook me, and I decided I owed to my comrades to find out what happened. Searching the ocean tirelessly, I eventually found more hidden beyond the horizon than anyone might have expected. For their own, inscrutable purposes, the Fathomless spoke to me. Despite being a being of immense power around the seas, my patron claims they did not cause the destruction or disappearance of my ship. Instead, they have sent me back out onto Land - me, a being of the Air and the Sea - to act as...perhaps a liaison? Perhaps a diplomat? A scout? My patron does not seem to require worship, they're not a God - proselytizing is not needed. I have no idea why I felt drawn to the land, nor what is expected of me here. I've known little beyond the sea and have but hazy memories of my family - they're still out there somewhere, but I have no clue where or what happened to them.

After the disappearance of my ship, most people I've known are gone. I do still know some captains in the fleet, and in most harbors I'll be able to find someone to help me out with simple tasks related to ship maintenance and provisioning or tell me the latest port gossip.

---
Aarakocra are adult around 3 years of age, and only live to maybe 10 years. My character is just around 3-ish, so a young adult but pretty inexperienced. About 5 feet tall and 75-ish pounds Rubecula is small and light even by A standards. Not sure what nickname/calling name to use - Ruby, Eri, Becky...Haven't decided yet, so other characters can possibly experiment and annoy me with it  Since I didn't find an Aarakocra picture that fit my mind's view, imagine this picture as far as coloring/plumage goes, and add some humanoid traits. yes, I'm boring and went with an owl, shoot me :p

Kind of weird. I used Chrome on my PC to roll my persuasion check but it is not logged there, but the roll appears in the APP on my phone.

I've found I need to refresh sometimes to get it to appear in the log when rolling in chrome.

Yeah oddly for me the app is just way better than the site. Like when my wife was making her character we couldn't access all the races until we used the app even though she had joined the campaign and should have had access.

It is a very steep learning curve for me, as I am old stubborn and stuck in my ways of only using paper and books.

Oh, I've been using the site. Are my rolls not coming through?

The only roll I see in the log myself for Beira is a custom 20, if that helps.

Can ignore my con roll there, was just verifying something.

From the character sheet if you want to make a specific roll you can click and of the button + or - modifiers.

Green is for skill checks, Goldenrod is for saving throws, Slate is for checks.

Hmm, your con roll shows up in my Chrome, and my attack roll just showed up as well.

I uh rapier the darkness!

Neat! It even calculated the crit damage correctly.

As an FYI, and so long as no one objects, I need fighters for a tournament going on in my current campaign and I'm gonna make use of your sheets since they're available here.

So, bad timing I know cause we're just getting started but I'm going to be offline for a few days. Something came up and I'll be in the hospital without my phone for a few days. Nothing big so don't worry. Hopefully we can pick things up Monday.

Thank you all for your concern for Phil. Spoke with him today and he is doing better. He slept well and all.

Philling y'all in on Phil:

He's still at the hospital but he is doing much much better. He will hopefully get to come home tomorrow or the next day but the doctor hasn't said yet.

Have a good day all.

Oh and today is Phil's bday so have a little fun on his behalf please!

Ugh, really? Fun? I'm supposed to go and have fun now? Well, fine, for Phill - but don't expect me to like it!

Hope all goes well and he can have a good day too, as far as that's possible in a hospital :)

Question, obviously when flying in heavy headwinds, trying to perch on the tip of a very narrow pike, or whatever I assume I'll be asked to make athletics or acrobatics checks, or if I'm trying to impress someone with a somersault maybe performance or whatever. Do you expect/want any rolls for normal flying/landing/taking off? "landing in a tree" doesn't sound like something that'd take any skill from a bird(like creature), but just wanted to make sure.

Correct. I assume you have normal competence in flying so unless there's something like a storm or you're trying to be extra precise (catching a falling object/person) or showboating and being *super* extra I assume you can do it.

I had a song block all weekend :(

Binging Law and Order didn't help either.
