Today is the 30th anniversary of the IBM PC platform.

It's the 34th anniversary of the Apple ][, for what that's worth.

...and the world was forever changed.

Happy Birthday to both. The first two computers I remember using were an Apple IIe and an IBM-PC compatible. I think it's safe to say I wouldn't be where I am now without either device.

The first machine I learned to program was the Apple ][. Then the first machine I owned was an IBM XT clone. They changed the course of my life. I'd likely still have a shovel or wrench in my hand working for an oilfield company now if not for them.

I'd be turning tricks in an alley, sucking dicks for my next hit. Or an ignore button. Whichever.

I was born the same year as the 386. I've never lived without a computer nearby.

I'm too young to ever remember not having a PC in some form or another nearby, but I'm old enough that the computer we had when I was little had MS-DOS. We've come a long way in a short time.

It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since I picked up Sid Meier's Civilization.

It's Civ. Time flies by like crazy when you play that game. Welcome to 2011, we have portable phones, Newspapers you can read electronically, and those 3 1/2" floppies you have are now obsolete.

Oh PC, without you and my own weak will I might have not have weighed 300 pounds at 22. I wouldn't trade our time for anything baby.

The PC - the awesomeness which serves as primary motivation for, and the failures of which create the opportunity for, my life's employment.

I didn't have a PC until I was 15 years old in 1995, and I feel I'm a better person for it.

Computers now allow us to make mistakes hundreds of times faster than we could before.

Life without PCs? I shudder to think. However other aspects of my life would be MUCH easier with a little less technology.

You worms should be thankful. The RTS genre is the only reason you're not all crunching noisily under the heels of my minions even as we speak.

And thank god for that. All I have to protect me is a bunch of Stormtroopers and AT-STs

I wouldn't worry myself, we're protected by nature. The same way the Russians were from the Germans. Invade Canada, go nuts, enjoy the winter.

Bomb your cities to maple-flavored dust. Now YOU enjoy the winter! BAH HAH HA HA HA HAAA!

I don't live in a city and I will. I like winter.

Do you like it without electricity?

#23

Frank

Electricity, pfah. I'm from the fabled Canadias. We don't even have electricity 3/4's of the year. It's only for special occasions when someone wants to light up the giant MacKenzie bushes. Besides, it's why we're born with the thick fur coat.

I'd vote for annexation if only so I didn't have to get a passport simply to drive across the border 30 miles away.
