Puerto Rico passed a referendum to become the 51st state yesterday.

I kind of like this design for a 51 star flag:

Still a long way to go to statehood. This is kind of a non-binding / unofficial deal. I hope it happens, but there are a lot of steps and hurdles to go.

Well, it's been 53 years since the last State was admitted. This has been going on a while, maybe it will actually come to pass this time.

They asked. It's up to Congress now... and really, I can't think of any reason to say no that doesn't involve the Republicans not wanting the Democrats to get more electoral ballots.

This would be a GIANT feather in Obama's hat if he pulls it off though.

The newly elected leadership might see it gets blocked if they can, as they don't want it to happens.

Bets on a Republican controlled Congress actually letting this happen?

One argument I've heard people use in the past is that "America will become a two language country overnight"

Which is bullshit, but people will go for it.

The newly elected leadership ... don't want it to happens.
Both Romney and Obama indicated in the past that they'd be fine with it. I haven't heard anyone campaigning against it, nor does it seem to be a partisan issue. What have you read that suggests that the newly elected leadership don't want it to happen?

I think some people are riding the negative campaign still. Or looking at the fact that the Republicans control the House, and since every Republican is a racist, sexist, homophobe they clearly must not want to add a state that's going to bring in more spanish speaking brown people.

What's funny is I heard this multiple times on GoP radio. They actually want to secede from the country and ask Alabama/Missouri/etc with them.

Also, if the South starts to Rise Again, can you guys just bloody well let them? The world would be a better place with a relatively modern and forard-looking North-Eastern and Western Union leading the Western world and Yet Another Extremist Religious State With Nukes And Oil next to it.:whistling:

I'd gladly move out of Texas if it were to happen. Thankfully the majority of Texans (believe it or not) are not that stupid.

Heck, I moved TO Texas from Colorado. Don't get me wrong, Colorado's nice and all, but it's hard to beat Texas for low cost of living and a good job market. Last I heard from the folks back in Colo Springs, the municipal government was so strapped for cash they were having to turn off 10,000 streetlights.

I'm full of shit though, ever since I moved to Austin I have enjoyed the hell out of it. It's 90% of the good with 10% of the bad where in places I've lived before the rate isn't nearly that unbalanced in favor of the positive.

It's the leadership in Puerto Rico. They just elected new people to office, and some of the ones at the top are very, very much against statehood.

Ah, yes, the infighting. Well, there are a number of problems with the referendum anyway, so it's going to face legal challenges inside the country, and the US isn't going to do anything until congress receives an official request for statehood, which won't happen unless it comes from the governor, who is against statehood.

Chances are it'll drag out until the next election, where another more carefully worded proposal will be put to the people, which the governor will probably not be able to continue to oppose without legal problems.

Of course by then they may also convince the majority to vote against it.

Still, this is another step toward statehood.

I've been to Round Rock, it's pretty damn nice I'll admit. If I didn't need to be so close to the University I'd have strongly considered it.

Flix Brewhouse > Alamo Drafthouse any day of the week.

That was a fun day, I actually live right behind that shopping center they opened Flix Brewhouse. It's in walking distance if I really want to see a movie that bad. Sure beats driving twenty minutes to the nearest Alamo.

Alamo has more history and in most cases a lot more screens, but Flix is just the better theater. This is, for the most part, because it's a lot newer, and thus can invest in some better things like better seats and work out better food, which just make it more enjoyable.

Pretty much dead on.

Alamo has better -off mainstream/new movie- nights but if you want to watch something new? Flix is going to be alot better overall for the experience (Food/Theatre Quality/Drinks/Seats/Screen) etc

I'm just sad that we don't really have places like that near where I live in Jersey. Supposedly, there's a drafthouse-style cinema in Edgewater or something, but without a car it might as well be a million miles away.

The number 50 has been undeniably uncool since 50 Shades of Grey. Not even an entire country wants to be associated with that.
