The new Panasonic Toughbook 31.

No idea how expensive it is, but if it can take this kind of abuse and keep chugging along I think it would be well worth the investment. This would be perfect for the business traveler who doesn't need to have a super-powerful computer but must have it able to withstand the rigors of travel.

But with the advent of tablet PCs will it be worth it for very long?

Jesus. The thing runs from $4,000-5,000 for a moderately equipped laptop. You could buy 3 decent laptops for that. It may be useful for things like field work for utility's and construction sites, but it's gonna have a pretty small market. Still pretty cool they can make em that tough.

How well does it handle World of Warcraft. There have been times during raids that I want to throw my laptop... This may help with my addiction.
But at $4000 you could break 8 normal laptops with the same performance.

I'd be curious to see tests run on the hard drive to see if any bad sectors after all that abuse. Surely they can't make all the components that abuse-proof?

I would think it'd have an SSD. If it doesn't, that's kind of stupid. A drive with no moving parts is the way to go, to avoid data loss from physical shock.

The website offers "shock mounted HDD"s and SSD options.

Can these things survive being shot at?If so come Z day they might be very useful.

Our department uses toughbooks... I have personally verified that they can withstand a crash at 55 mph that totalled a Crown Vic... I wrote my reports on it from the hospital while I was waiting to be cleared

Yes, but can you shoot one?

Please video tape it.
What kind of firearm are we talking? I'm pretty sure it's not going to stand up to much more than a BB gun. I mean, if you really wanted it bullet resistant you could just add some type III NIJ standard hard armour plates to it and away you go.

I'm more concerned with why you would need a bulletproof laptop :).

Milspec is not Zomspec. Machines in an apocalypse are fragile, and human sanity is in short supply. Besides, who better to tackle hordes of the undead than a T800?

How about a T-1000 teamed up with a T-800 in a post-apocalyptic buddy robot cop adventure?

It will be the blockbuster event of the summer for sure.

We could probably script this waaay better than Hollywood can.

I imagine you could bludgeon zombies to death with it and it would take the abuse and keep on asking for more. As long as it's water proof anyways.

Probably? You two have already come up with an idea that's better than 95% percent of the crap that Hollywood produces. I think you'd have to work hard to script it worse than they could/would.
