Not that I know of in recent times, but Star Control was similar to another old game called "Starflight," which had a lot more commerce and such in it.
The closest modern game I can come up with would probably be Freelancer, but it's not really the same. In fact, it's got a lot more in common with Wing Commander: Privateer.
You might be able to slake your thirst for SC in Eve Online, perhaps. It has a free 14 day trial. Of course, none of the mentioned games have the same wit and humor that SC2 did.
And the open source port of SC2, The Ur-Quan Masters I really need to get around to playing that someday. I've played the multi-player ship combat with a friend, but I've never played the campaign.

Star Control 2 is my favorite game of all time. I wish and pray that one day Toys for Bob is financed to make a proper sequel as they are itching to do.

And here I was going to mention that game. Starflight. Such a simple game with so much depth, and also the first game I ever played that had an 'idle*.' I still have it (on 3.5in floppies) and occasionally get the hankering to play it (and still have machines which will play it!), but I never seem to be able to locate both the codewheel, the map, and the game (and the free time) at the same time.
