Buh bye, my friend. You will be missed.

(And for the record, the only things I ever downloaded from there were songs/albums I had already purchased at some point in my life, e-books from books I'd read before, and TV shows that I have been unable to get - usually from the UK. I don't pirate new music, movies, or games.)

That was one of the best places for me to find old files that are no longer sold anywhere, this sucks.

They don't have the managers or admins because ColoCall refused to give out that info. They gave a vague location (Mexico) but that's it. So it's entirely possible it could come back. They were certainly planning to before the raid anyway (they needed to upgrade hardware anyway) and it's not like a raid stopped The Pirate Bay (even IF it is a shell of it's old self now).

So yeah... this is a setback, but it's not an unrecoverable one. But even if they DO come back, it's going to be months.

Dave

Dave

Same here. And for my old books that either were lost, stolen, or destroyed when a pipe burst. Which really sucks.

Much like TPB, the pertinent files for Demonoid probably fit on a single thumb drive. I'm sure it'll be back once he finds some other hosting that isn't looking to be the finger cuff between the US FedGov and the MPAA/RIAA.

Have to laugh though at how the Ukrainian govt is saying "Look! To appease you, we shut forcefully down this this private entity that isn't violating any of our laws, without due process! Aren't you pleased with our authoritarianism now that it briefly caters to your ill-conceived whims?"

An Eastern European government that's corrupt? Now I've seen it all. :whistling:

Apparently, Mexico was the culprit. Boy, governments of the world seem to work real well together whenever they're stopping the dangerous and malignant crime of IP infringement (sort of, depending on the country).

The lessons of napster have still not been learned. Every time they squash the latest "thing" in the name of anti-piracy, something that is exponentially better replaces it. After napster, there was edonkey. After edonkey (and emule) came kazaa. After kazaa, limewire. After limewire, torrent sites. Every time they try to kick the hole in the hull shut, it just makes the water come in faster.

#9

DarkAudit

DarkAudit

Limewire was just a client. The network hasn't gone anywhere. Neither has edonkey.

And USENET has been around longer than any of them.

#10

AshburnerX

And ultimately, there will always be people copying stuff for their friends. The smaller they make it, the harder it is to stop.

Yeah, this sucks. I don't always torrent, but when I do, I prefer Demonoid.

No they haven't "gone anywhere" and I think even napster still exists in some form, but the IP trolls have taken actions both overt and covert against them over time. I remember using one particularly badass edonkey server that got shut down. Plus you have the corporate plants who clutter the networks with bad uploads, like 4 bars of the chorus repeated over and over, etc.

Usenet predates them all, of course, but it never had the mainstream access they fear so much. If you want to get technical, I'm pretty sure I could hop right back into my IRC Fserves and get back in the game near instantly. All of this was beside the point I'm making. They can't accomplish anything trying to play whack-a-mole with the march of progress. They need to progress as well. They need to take a hard look at their dinosaur of a business model and update it. I'd say probably the most effective piracy fighting entity since the invention of the internet has been steam - not because of DRM, but because of their business model.

Steam has completely reformed me as a game pirate. I haven't torrented a game in a looooong time.

Steam isn't perfect, good lord, by any means. Lately some of the practices have become increasingly shady, but it's still a good service.

This for me too. Now that I know I can get just about any game I want for 10 dollars or less eventually, I don't feel the need to grab games online anymore.

GasBandit

Me too, sad to say. I haven't pirated a game since installing steam. In fact, I have now paid for several games I had previously pirated.

And now archive.org has gotten into the act, opening/offering up more stuff than you could possibly fit on all the hard drives in your house, ever (for now).

Type any gibberish you like into a Shareaza search. You're guaranteed at least a half dozen hits.

As have I.

Though at a tiny fraction of the price they were at when I first pirated them. :whistling:

Stopped using Demonoid a while back after discovering much better websites with alot more users. Towards the end, it became trouble some to find older stuff on Demonoid.

#22

Frank

Frank

What? Demonoid was great for pretty much anything. There are no non-private trackers that were anywhere near as good as Demonoid.

#23

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh

Selection wise, Demonoid was not remotely high up there. At least 6-7/10 times I was looking for something older, I'd end up at the other websites. Once I found a direct download site for just about any TV show or Movie, I found next to no use for Demonoid. Anytime I needed a game or program, the other major torrent site always provided more seeders and more options for download. Maybe I was just -unlucky- at Demonoid but that was my general experience.

#24

Frank

The only thing most public trackers have a larger selection of, in my experience now without Demonoid, is trash, bullshit, fake files.

I don't think I ever used Demonoid. Never regularly, for sure. I was always a TPB or especially EZTV kinda guy. Still, good news for those that liked that site.

Welp, my Demonoid account is also intact. So... I guess if anyone wants an invite there, I can make that happen too.

Of course, I don't plan to use it right now. I think, even if I was not using IPTorrents... I'd give this a few months to make sure it's not a honeypot.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I went there last night but everything I tried to get (nothing that I didn't already buy once, so no piracy) gave errors that the torrents weren't set up right. I didn't even try to fix it so it might be an easy thing.
