Export thread

it's kind of weird that Kanye West and Taylor Swift are probably my two favorite musical artists

but they are. I guess this is a backdoor thread to blab about how much I love "Yeezus". But "Red" was a huge contender for my favorite album of last year too. I weirdly want them to work together, even though it's impossible.

But seriously, "Yeezus" is a pretty amazing achievement and I dunno why I'm talking about it here since I dunno if any of y'all would like it, or listen to it, or get it. I don't mean that from a music elitest standpoint saying you don't "get it", but it's kind of. Man, it's doing something pretty fucking unique and powerful. I love it so much. I'm listening to it for the 4th time at really huge maximum volume making me feel every beat and every lyric.

And everyone makes jokes about Taylor Swift, but she's such a really great songwriter, and her songs are all so fucking good, and ugh!

Anyways, I'm kind of drunk sorry for this rambling thread about music. I like music a lot. I drove around for an hour letting "Yeezus" sink in with my car stereo on maximum speeding around Houston*.

*I wasn't drunk then, drunk drivers are evil[DOUBLEPOST=1371609088][/DOUBLEPOST]let me rephrase, clarify - not my two favorite of all time (of all time!!!), but like, favorite right now.

I personally have nothing for or against Taylor Swift; it's perfectly possible that if you actually listen to the songs they're meaningful or whatever; just listening in the background in the car or so they don't stand out for me but, you know, my musical tastes suck too.

That said, those parodies are funny:p
But whoever put them up, bejaysus, get rid of the FOUR ads on every 26 seconds clip.

It's not exactly the same thing, but does this help?

I hate Kanye West for thinking he's a musical genius. And I especially hate that he may be right.

North West. Amazing. Kanye owns.

also- rap is still good. Even if Kanye isn't your bag, there's a LOT of amazing rap artists around these days doing a lot of great, varied work

You mean a real artist like Macklemore who you wrote off within 10 seconds of a video start months ago? Who has more powerful and meaningful messages in ONE of his songs/videos

than anything either Kanye or Taylor has ever done?

Oh that's right, if they're not mainstream and cliche, you're not into it.

it's amazing how you're able to post with each of your hands constantly jerking off Macklemore and Ryan Lewis simultaneously every hour of the day

also are you from a different planet where "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us" isn't played always on everything forever?

(I've posted once about Macklemore in the past, where as this is your hmmm 8-10th post about Kanye? Who's hands are covered in lotion now?)

will you at least admit that saying Macklemore isn't "mainstream" is incredibly false[DOUBLEPOST=1371838973][/DOUBLEPOST]actually, stepping back a minute, I'm sorry for making a dumb gay sex joke about someone liking a musical artist a lot. I'm better than that, etc, and it wasn't even funny

I think Kanye and Macklemore are both really good.

Taylor Swift has some good stuff, but her bad music is worse than almost any other bad music out at a given time. I would love If I never had to hear "22" and "never getting back together" again.

Yeah, that's a whole lot better. I don't know why I didn't find that as brilliant as you apparently do.

Edit: Not sure why my comment isn't showing up, but maybe with an edit it will.

He was definitely more of a -made- artist than self pushed.

Either way, when I say -mainstream- perhaps I should clarify and more precisely say -stuck on themselves/full of themselves- type of artist.

OH MY GOD GUYS DID YOU KNOW THAT THE ONLY WAY TO TELL HOW GOOD AN ARTIST IS IS BY LOOKING AT HOW MAINSTREAM HE IS?

Seriously the only people who care about that shit are people who are so insecure in their music tastes they can't respect the music on it's own merits, and have to come up with extra metrics that grant the music, and themselves, a bit more cred.

Yeah, sorry about that, I apologize and decided to correct my terminology.

Not quite sure where you got being insecure about music tastes, but there you go.

Its not the right wording, but if you don't really understand why you like a song, purely in terms of the music, you will resort to "meta" reasons to like it. Like, I really really dig a bunch of Brittney Spears stuff. Apparently I'm not supposed to, because she's "big industry" and has a giant production team behind her and she's not really musically talented etc etc.

But none of that affects how "I'm a Slave" sounds to me, how much I like the break beat rythms mixed with pop vocals

Meta arguments are for people who can't talk about the music as music. It's fair you don't like a lot of pop music because you dislike 4 on the floor. It's stupid to say you don't like pop music because they are "mainstream" or because 14 year old girls like it. All saying that says is that your opinions about music have nothing to do wih music, they have to do with other, invented stuff. And the only reason someone would do that is because they don't have any real opinions about actual music.

I agree, it's stupid to like music or dislike music because it's mainstream. Hence why I apologized and corrected myself.

I used to hate music because it was mainstream.... when I was an angsty teenager.

Then I grew up.

One thing that I don't get is how people place little to no emphasis on lyrics in a song. Maybe because I'm a writer myself, but to me lyrics are just as important, if not moreso, than the music itself.

Addendum: This isn't directed at Gilgamesh, just the idea in general that because something is mainstream, it sucks.

Which the majority of Macklemore's music is about. Amazing lyrics, beautiful stories like the video I posted. I agree completely.

I couldn't agree more. I'm reminded of Charlie's -reviews- of Avengers.

I dunno, lyrics have never mattered to me. I'm a terrible karaoke participant because of this since I don't actually know the lyrics to any songs. The voice of the singer is just another musical instrument to me when I listen to music.

Big example. One of my favorite songs of all time is Evenflow by Pearl Jam. Probably because I can sing along to it.

OHHHHH EEEEEE BLEEEEEEEEEH JIMMA LIMMA BA BA BOODIBY BE DA YEE HAAAA. EEEEEEERRR YEEEAH.

I agree that unique vocals can make even the worst lyrics amazing (50 Cent comes to mind) but even still, solid lyrics PLUS a unique vocal can make a song legendary (David Bowie and most of his music as well as all of Amy Winehouse's early work).
