[Movies] Jackass Bad Grandpa got more oscar nominations than The Butler, Rush, and Fruitvale Station combined

Didn't like the first smurfs, not going to go out of my way to watch the second. Don't know if it's because they "modernized" them, or if I'd hate watching the original as an adult now.
The original comics still hold up decently. The original cartoons....Some. The 3D movies? Absolute garbage.
Ditto for, say, Garfield, and a lot of other similar children's cartoons/comics. They just don't transfer to real life properly, and trying to make a long deeper movie out of some of these makes them too "serious" or too nonsensical to look at for long.

Dilbert worked as a TV show, but had the misfortune of airing on a network that wasn't interested in supporting it. Boondocks works exceptionally well as a TV show. I also remember Prince Valiant being pretty fucking awesome.

Basically, newspaper cartoons can work, but only if you put effort into them. Most people don't put effort into them.

Dilbert isn't an easy children's cartoon. Neither is Boondocks. Prince Valiant, I'll give you that one :p
I didn't say newspaper comics can't work, and you're right a lot of it has to do with effort, but it's also simply about simplicity of storytelling and stereotypes.
