I deliberately left out any reference to the reasons it was allowed to progress until it was terminal. I couldn't think of a good way state it without conveying any sort of obvious bias.

Actually no, it was because he didn't want to bother going to the hospital, and had gotten a shitty diagnosis from a doctor. He hadn't practiced that Christian Science thing for almost 20 years.
